    it reminds me of the how the rangers got their motto of rangers lead the way The motto "Rangers lead the way!" dates from 6 June 1944, during the Normandy Landings on Dog White sector of Omaha Beach. Then Brigadier General Norman Cota (assistant CO of the 29th ID) calmly walked towards Maj. Max Schneider (CO of the 5th Ranger Battalion) while under heavy machine gun fire and asked "What outfit is this?" Someone yelled "5th Rangers!" To this, Cota replied "Well then Goddammit, Rangers! Lead the way!"

    IIRC "We've been here before, in this kind of War... Crossfire grind in the Sand" is referring to North Africa being a reference to the British having verterans from that campaign also landing. (I seem to recall this is actually referring to a specific unit who's 'moto' was Primo Victoria) "We could do a whole series of video's on..." why yes, please and thank you :) "World of Tanks" btw, the tank they are using is actually "their" tank which was a premium offer and they voiced the crew in the positions they occupy in the video. Again IIRC they actually 'own' that tank and have used it in concerts.

    Two songs you should listen to are "1741 the Battle of Cartagena" and "No Grave But the Sea" by Alestorm 1741 is about the Battle of Cartagena de Indias, George Washington's brother was in that battle. No Grave But the Sea is about the Battle of the Saintes also known as the Battle of Dominica. They don't have videos for either of them. Some fan made lyrics videos exist.

    I wonder if all the brave people who fought on June 6th 1944 (on both sides) had any idea how significant that date would be. One of the most pivotal events of the last century. Certainly for Western culture. It's still kind of crazy how it happened within the last century, in fact. Realistically, this was very recent in terms of human history, and yet it was another world entirely

  • @phillee2814

    @phillee2814

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@toddv7257 I've long thought that the sacrifice of 155 Battery of the R.A. at Sidi Nsir in 1943 has Sabaton written all over it. 24 (155 Battery plus 3 batteries from the 172nd Field Regiment, R.A) 25 pounders holding up two full divisions (13 infantry battalions plus the 501st Heavy Panzer Battalion and 10th Panzer Division with supporting troops) of an entire German army Corps, plus Luftwaffe support (approx 30,000 men in all) for the vital 24 hours needed to act as a "trip-wire" to let Monty and his subordinates know where the attack was coming and organise defences in the right positions. Of 130 Officers and men, only 9 made it back to British lines, 7 of whom were wounded. The last message sent from the battery was "Tanks are upon us" followed by "...-" They were still firing to the last, having been over open sights from the start of the engagement, and were taking on Panzers from down to 10 yards with their last remaining 25lber. But it wasn't in vain - by the time Rommel's troops (under Oberst Rudolf Lang) broke past them, the whole of the following 15 miles to the Hunt's Gap defile had been turned into an ambush and tank kill-zone. None of the Axis objectives were met and the 501st Heavy Panzer division was described as "no longer an effective fighting force" having lost 90% of the tanks used including 19 of its 20 "Tiger" Panzer IV tanks and 52 others (71 out of 77 in all), plus sixty other armoured and semi-armoured vehicles and the whole attack lost half its strength taken prisoner, plus many killed and wounded. Within 10 weeks the Axis front collapsed, and the 230,000 Axis troops in Tunisia surrendered. If that isn't screaming for a Sabaton song, I don't know what is.

    @@phillee2814 wow, imagine the resolve, sending "tanks are upon us" folowed by a morse ...- "V" (for victory), while taking casualties that high (almost 95%), one BEEEEP of a sacrifice to stop the axis.

  • @phillee2814

    @phillee2814

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@najroe The last senior officer reported that even the wounded were cheerful and supportive, singing "Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition" as the remaining ammunition was salvaged from the burning ammunition trucks and hand-carried up the hill to the gun positions. unloading high explosives from a burning truck seems pretty resolute, yes. They'd been hastily reformed after what was colloquially known as " a dip in the Med" after being torpedoed on the transport carrying them to Africa just weeks before, and this was their first action. And remember, as an artilleryman, you are really only expecting to deliver indirect plunging fire, in which you never see the enemy (although you can expect to be countered by return fire) Any time you open the engagement over open sights (i.e. looking along the top of the barrel directly at the enemy), you are already a long way up BEEEEP creek and bereft of anything to paddle with. And they went down firing, fighting to the muzzle. To this day, the site is marked on Google Earth as "tank graveyard". They had some big ones, to be sure. Within the Royal Artillery, they are legends - my father commanded a battery of 25lbers post-war, and the men of 155 Battery are viewed as the unassailable and paramount example of what one battery, with resolve and discipline, can do.

    Fun fact: "Primo Victoria" isn't just latin, it's wrong latin. Since latin has linguistical genders (like for example German or spanish as well), the Correct way to say "First Victory" would be "prima Victoria". Because the noun Victoria is a female Word, the Adjektive "Prima" has to End on "a".

  • @xJamesLaughx

    @xJamesLaughx

    2 жыл бұрын

    In my opinion just based on what happened at the existing beaches like Omaha if the beaches were better defended and the Germans knew they were coming and exactly where they would strike the Allies would have been driven back into the sea. With knowledge the Allies were coming and where exactly that would mean Rommel would not have returned to Germany for his wife's birthday and his Panzer Divisions sitting to the rear during D-Day, and never brought forward until after the Allies had a strong foothold during the actual battle, would have been prepared and in place waiting for the Allies to land strengthening the defenses even more. That alone would have led to a significant problem for the landing troops.
