It's a clean cut. Dude's hair was healthy, looks like he didn't want to style it further than pulling it back. In 2023, no job short (there are others, I know) of a fire fighter or active military that should be dictating his hairstyle.

Then the tidbits about life and the relaxing music in the background is a bonus! You spoke on getting back to the things that you love...that hit home. Sometimes we lose ourselves by spreading ourselves too thin and lose focus. So like you said if we find that one thing that we love...it will keep us grounded. This is a great haircut and amazing transformation, the only thing that would make it be 10/10 would be if there was a little more of a gradient in the fade, it goes from light to dark real quick with nothing in between, maybe put the zero/short guideline lower to allow the fade to come through. I always see barbers make the same mistake of taking their zero guideline way too high and they don’t have much hair left to play with to create a fade

I think it depends. I agree short hair looks good on most of us Black men. But longer hair looks interesting as there are more styling options. But I think it’s also easier to get the style wrong with longer hair hence it doesn’t always look better. I’m assuming the haircut needs to be more catered to the persons head rather than doing the same type of fade or hair cut for longer hair. Also especially with our hair i think we can easily over style a long haircut that it stops complimenting the face.
