His gameplay made NO sense, until... | Dead by Daylight

Ойындар

The other day we watched some Killer gameplay from a viewer and learned that they were partially deaf. At that moment, I realized why he had been struggling to track Survivors despite his otherwise excellent gameplay. Everything suddenly made a lot of sense! This video aims to shed some more light at the accessibility issues that a lot of players still face in DBD.

    I'm colorblind and seeing scratchmarks/bloodstains against dark surfaces is nearly impossible for me. I don't play this game, just watch a lot of content for it, but that's definitely something that I thought of in the past - if I were ever to play it, I would be at an automatic handicap lol I would love to see games adding more accessibility options, it's crazy how few games come out with colorblind-friendly options. Cuphead to this day doesn't have one, and it's a game that desperately needed it.

    @@MatNightmare The thing that annoys me is that it seems like colorblind features are just "we changed the UI, you're welcome." Like, bro, the colour of my add on doesn't matter when I'm in the match, I can't see pretty vital parts of the game! Scratch marks, bloodstains, even entire characters! Also, a lot of games are getting extremely realistic, graphic wise, which makes a lot of objects blend together. Something I loved about Overwatch back in the day, and now Fortnite, is that the cartoony graphics make everything stand out.

    1000% on the accessibility issue. I’ll also say that it’s weird that all in game auras are the same 3 colors. Like there are 5 perks that turn generators yellow when they’re being affected by a perk, meaning despite the perks potentially having synergy, the same color auras make them difficult or impossible to use together. Why not make different perks have different color auras (might help killers distinguish which survivors are affected by which perks too).

    @@Frost_Winterfall You're on an amazing track here what I'd suggest as a colorblind person is to texture the auras, probably the easiest way would be verticle, horizontal, and diagonal lines for the the 3 main aura colors red/white/yellow. stuff like this can be seen in the colorblind modes for starcraft, and discord! this was made standard but at one point the different discord statuts bubbles were all dots. now they have subtle shapes to them online is a full green dot. invisible is a gray on gray doughnut. away is a crescent moon shape and do not disturb is a red and black stopsign with the line in the middle. stuff like that is something that incorporates seamlessly soo that even normal sighted people could get used to it without ever knowing it's a colorblind feature.

    Accessibility option: Optional small subtle brief visual indicator of player sounds (and *rough* direction) above a certain decibel in close range and/or subtitles for all player sounds above a certain decibel in close proximity. Also resolves the problem of people with bad headphones. If it's normally detectable with a certain human sensory organ, compensate with another sensory organ for people with disabilities. Perks that silence or reduce sounds should also effect this detection indicator. This option should only be implemented for guarantied to be heard noise within close range. Games should consider and implement accessibility options for people with disabilities as standard. Games are a positive and contributory stimulation tool for those that struggle to normally access such things.

  • @babalonkie

    @babalonkie

    Ай бұрын

    @@kingol4801 "Make life good for all players" And that is EXACTLY what i am suggesting. Good headphones allow a player to tell where and what something is that is making audible sound... people who have hearing issues or lack of money to buy expensive technology do NOT have to endure avoidable hardship... no matter what the entitled in this world believe. If a sound can be CLEARLY heard (Detected)... the "stealth" element is completely gone, therefore it's totally possible to introduce a alternative detection to compensate for those who are unfortunate WITHOUT giving a additional benefit to those who are fortunate to have 100% hearing and good headphones. If i can clearly hear someone breathing in a locker right in front of me... a brief small visual indicator is NOT going to benefit me in anyway... infact... if i have the feature turned on, it's unnecessary because i have the ability to hear... it may even be annoying to me (making sure i turn it off as i don't need it). If someone jumps from a height screams and slams into the ground 5 meters from me... there is ZERO reason for me to not detect it as my senses are not impaired. I am not talking about a large noise indicator that updates constantly for someone walking at 50 meters... i am talking about a brief small indicator for loud sounds near the player. This feature is already in games unintentionally.... it's known as a "damage indicator"... you know.. that feature that visual compensates for a players inability to FEEL... another sensory organ. Also in this very video when Otz hooked the last survivor, a indicator came on the screen for the person screaming on the hook. A toned down restricted version could also be implemented for additional sounds... like someone screaming whilst they fall... for example. The solution is already there... it just needs to be carefully expanded.

    Honestly as someone who isnt deaf but does have a hard time hearing certain ques (especially when a lot of noises are happening at once) one of the best things a game can do is just put in subtitles. It doesn't have to say the direction its coming from but just seeing on your screen *bill grunts* when he falls helps a lot A game that did this WONDERFULLY before most of these things were even thought about was left 4 dead and left 4 dead 2. You could not only hear the different piano or violin stings the specials made, not only could you hear the noises they make and hear your teammates say "boomer" the subtitles would pop up with everything but the musical sting

    Some time ago I saw someone on the DbD forums ask for more sound indicators for hard of hearing players to be added, and they gave the example of Wraith - without being able to hear the ringing of his bell, every match is like playing against his iridescent add-on. And the fact that it's iridescent rarity shows how the devs understand as well how important sound cues usually are in DbD. Personally I love the sound design in this game, and the unique sounds for different actions and Killer powers, but I do wish there was an option for some sort of accesibility feature, for both Killers and Survivors... As Killer it is so much harder without being able to hear injured survivors, or if a gen is being worked on. In that forum post, they suggested some sort of vibration in the corner of the screen for example, to signal the bell ringing. There are really several ways these things could be creatively added to the game.

    The sight one is such a broad spectrum, too. I'm functionally blind so I've always run a ton of filters, which--with every visual update--help less and less. I make the bright makes darker, the dark maps brighter, and it's not any sort of advantage, it's so I can just see. And most of the time it doesn't even help. Autohaven's weird green haze doesn't ever really go away; corn is always corn; and tracking on indoor maps is virtually impossible. But we always try to make it work.

The problem is sometimes also that blinding (the bright animation NOT the status) can sometimes also trigger my sensory issues. Not all the time but it can. I fucking hate flashlights more than the average person.

    Fun Fact: there's a perk in Dead By Daylight called (Whispers) which indicate a survivor is in your AoE, depending on how close you are the (Whispers perk) will glow harder to indicate the survivor is near you, and if it fades away you're losing the presence of the survivor,

    Hey Otz, thanks for reviewing that match and realising this! I’m fully deaf with only a cochlear on my left side that is only half as good as your ear :) Means I cannot rely on audio that well, but I play with a lot of spinning around to make sure my left is able to hear all around me. And as you said with experience you don’t need to rely on the senses that much. This is true, I’ve only got about 400hrs as of now and I’m doing pretty well despite my nerf patch that I received at birth.

    Thank you for advocating for disabled players! It's so refreshing to see in this community!! I struggle with audio cues due to audio processing issues that can affect my directional hearing, and I agree there should be more accessibility options available. I've played dbd since late 2018, and when the heartbeat visual was added I was so happy to finally be able to tell how far away a killer was!!! And playing as killer could definitely use some directional audio cues like a screen border visual effect!!

Much love to the people who still find a way to play their favorite games despite the lack of accessibility, lets push for more!

    I'm a killer main with 350 hours in the game, and am Red/Green Colorblind (deuteranomaly), and shades of colors with red/green in them blend together very easily. (I.e. blue and purple look very similar) but even things like brown and green, pink and gray, yellow & green, red and brown, all blend in together relatively well. While there are options available to assist in correcting the colors in game/make them more vibrant (my GPU has colorblind settings that can apply to any game I play) even with them at their strongest, I can find myself missing scratch marks because they blend in, or second guessing myself if something is a sign of a survivor or just part of the map. While looking at my monitor, all the colors "should" appear better to me, I've spent so much time in life second guessing colors that my brain gaslights me subconsciously on what a color actually is. I super appreciate the attempt to immerse yourself into what others might struggle with/experience, just wanted to explain the colorblind angle, because 1. Monochromatic colorblindness is EXTREMELY rare, with Red/Green being the most common, and Blue/Green being the next most common. But also wanted to explain how shades, and colors can blend together, and how you still might not get that via a monochromatic point of view. Love the content, thanks Otz!

    I feel this to my core. I'm also Red/Green colorblind (with 550 hours in dbd). I actually dropped dead by daylight because of how hard it is to see the scratch marks. For about 2 years of watching Dead by Daylight creators I didn't even know about the scratch marks. Only learned about them when I looked up tips and tricks on how to chase survivors. edit: I used to attempt following scratch marks by looking out for the black part of it. Instead of the red because the red just blends in.

    I am myself deaf on my left ear due to a broken bone in the ear and sometimes Its really rough. Something I noticed is flashbangs, they make a subtle noise and sometimes I just dont hear it bc its on the side I dont hear. Something that is also impossible is directional hearing. It is impossible to tell from where a sound came even if I hear it, so playing against spirit is just guessing and its super unfun to be destroyed by that, playing spirit the same and any other killer it limits just somethings like hearing though a wall to know if they doubleback. That just takes away enjoyment when I lose the survivor because they run to my left. Im glad this video gives a bit more attention to that problem same as the colorblind problem. So thanks a lot Otz for this video

    It would also be eye opening to see this same setup on survivor gameplay which I think could be much more stressful. I mean, we have killer perks that mess with audio and visuals so clearly it has an impact but imagine dealing with it every moment of everyday for the rest of your life. Mad respect to people who do what they love no matter what their are experiencing.

    As someone with hearing problems I didn't learn that there was a sound cue for skill check until a year after I started playing the game. I always really struggled against Spirit as they're sound reliant both to play & to play against optimally. Also when I first started I struggled a lot with survivors escaping me by hiding in lockers, I still remember one game where all the survivors caught on that I wasn't good with lockers so they kept escaping me in really easy to catch ways. Once I got more experience in the game lockers didn't really affect me anymore for the most part. I heavily relied on visual perks like Bloodhound, Predator, & just seeing the birds be alerted from the distance. Whenever I would play Killer against my friends, if they wanted to mess with me they would just fast vault a pallet over & over again mid-chase to make it extra difficult for me to track the ones I was chasing because the fast vault noise was so overpowering compared to the other noises for me.

    as someone who is also deaf on my left side I understand the struggle playing killer XD, why I haven't been able to play spirit since they changed her fathers glasses addon. She was one of my faves to play and because of my inability to accurately track survivors when relying on hearing it rendered her unplayable to me now which is a shame, in most cases i rely purely on visual and heavily take aura reading on most of my killers

  • @miguelruggiero

    The only issue with accessibility settings, would be people who don't need them taking advantage of them This happens on the mobile version for example, you get visual indicators for running or injured survivors pointing exactly at where they are (making Spirit the absolute strongest killer in the game), same goes for some killer powers like Nurse blink, Doctor's shock or Billy's chainsaw for example Sadly, most if not all players end up taking advantage of it even when they don't need to, and all of the indicators actually have an unreasonably big range So while I agree that accessibility setting should be present, I also understand how difficult it is to add something like this while keeping it somewhat "balanced" by not giving some players an unfair advantage

  • @kingol4801

    @kingol4801

    Mobile actually does the balancing right. Spirit should be able to homing-missile upon other players. That or let her actually go through obstacles during her phasing. Etc etc etc Games in general should be balanced around the visual aspect more so than sound-based one, or else headphones create skewed economic discrimination. DbD on mobile makes the game genuinely visual and fair. Unlike DbD on PC
