HIRING A PRIVATE CAREGIVER - PROS AND CONS

Thinking of hiring a private caregiver for your elderly parent? This thought occurs to a lot of family caregivers, but they've heard negative things about hiring privately. But at the same time, they hear success stories about hiring a private caregiver. So, what's the truth? Will finding a caregiver be easy or hard? Where do you find private caregivers for hire? What are the pros and cons of hiring a private caregiver?
These questions are so important! You need to not only find the right person who works as a one on one caregiver or as a private sitter for the elderly, but they need to be a good match to work with your aging parent and they need to be honest, dependable and trustworthy. That's not too much to ask for, right? Well, they are out there. If you do this right, hiring a private CNA can be rewarding for your parent, you and for your direct hire caregiver.
In this video, I'll talk all about the pros and cons of hiring a private caregiver. Spoiler alert, the cons aren't really cons. There's a safe solution to everything!

Im a career CNA. I had one private duty client. I made sure I was timely and that my duties set by family were met. I hated when my agency limited the days for my clients. Thinking about starting my own private duty service.

Hi Sofia - Though I am attempting to hire a caregiver for myself and not a parent (I am in my mid 20s with a chronic illness that impacts my ability to do housework and cognitive tasks), this video was very helpful! :) I would definitely love to see a "step by step" how to hire a private caregiver video.

Hi Nora! I’m glad this was helpful! I’m actually thinking about making a training module on just that, but it’s a lot and probably won’t be ready when you need it. But if you want, you can contact me ( you should be able to get my # on my YT home page) and we can schedule a time when I can go over the steps with you, and I can get your feedback for my training module!

Wow! A lot of really good stuff. This helped me to organize my thoughts better, about hiring a caregiver. Do you have booklets about some of the specifics that aren't covered here? I'm happy to pay.

Very helpful information! We are using someone through an agency right now because, thank goodness, mom is eligible for 4 hrs a week free through our COA. Although we are very thankful, we have experienced all the negatives you mentioned. No one showed up last Friday. No call or warning. We see high turnover. Mom is uncomfortable w so many new people. Some are very good and others just want to be a “companion” and lay on her bed and watch TV! Which makes her (and me) very uncomfortable! I tried the private route for a few months and the turnover was terrible. But I’m going to start looking again. Thank you for another great video!

I agree with you, the turnover is just horrible private or using a company. I have gathered it's just best to hire as needed. Nursing care in the US need major improvement - the CNA pay is horrible.. nurses are tired of the hard labor work with very little pay - the turnover is the effect of it. I continue to seek help for mom no matter the situation.

Please make more videos on how to actually hire a private caregiver. One case I know about is an 88-year old senior had a 44-year old caregiver move in. That was a disaster. He was related to a family friend.

Yes, I would like a step-by-step video. I have a situation where I am a 66 year old mobility disabled single daughter. My parents are 85 years old with several health issues each. I have no siblings and I don't drive. I have no idea how to find a caregiver/personal assistant. We are all on Medicare and I am also on Medicaid. Any help you can suggest or links to your other videos that might address these issues would be greatly appreciated.

What payroll and tax service will keep the employer completely legal and protected against lawsuits, as well as taking care of all the difficult paperwork for you? I have zero interest in taking on the employer roll other than keeping myself, and the employee, legal and safe from lawsuits.

Hi JL. That's nice that you want to take care of your grandma! I'm assuming that your grandma has medi-caid since she is in a nursing home. If so, you should look into your counties program for caregiver services available to seniors at home who need help with ADLs. The county pays for a caregiver for medicaid recipients. Where I live, the info is found on the County Department of Public Social Services website, then under adult services. Here, the program is called In Home Support Services or IHSS, it might be called something else where you live. You could get paid through the county. I hope that helps. Good luck!
