I think they spent a lot more time outside, and/or moving their bodies-dancing (yes also chilling, but both!) and they ATE TO LIVE, as it should be, not like these days where unsatisfied and/or overworked and/or greedy people LIVE TO EAT... Of course substance abuse may play a role in some being skinny, however, let's not overlook the fact that it can also play a role in being over your natural body weight... There are plenty of 'drug abusers' in modern society, and plenty that are overweight from it. Depends how your metabolism or body make up. There probably wasn't a McD's or Dunk'n donuts on every corner back then... Hello consumerism.

Hippy culture didn't lead to Charles Manson. He saw its values as something he could exploit when it came to young females and naive youth. Charles Manson was a scumbag long before hippy culture happened, and he would have continued to be one without it. Go on any video of him ranting his crackpot philosophies, and you'll find people still falling for it to this day. American history is teeming with killers. Manson was just another in a long line. There are others who've done far worse than him without ever becoming anything like as infamous. The truth is he was a convenient poster boy for those threatened by hippy ideals who wanted it destroyed completely.

@@simonsimon325 I agree. There was a fear back then that hippies were actually a communist plot. In reality it was a youthful rebellion against the stultifying blandness of middle class existence. Another motivating factor was the injustice of young men being drafted to fight and die in a pointless war. Hippies terrified the ruling class and because of that paranoia, they went to great lengths to suppress and then co-opt the movement.

It doesn't matter if some of their political ideals were unworkable. The important thing is youth should push boundaries. They should rebel. They should innovate. They should challenge conventional wisdom. That's their role. On a fundamental level, that's why we reproduce every 25 years or so. We should be far more concerned when youth starts espousing conservativism.
