Hip joints for pain free standing and body image

This lesson is to prepare your hip joints for standing - to align them with the legs and spine, to lengthen the spine without unnecessary contractions and contortions.
Hip joints video workshop has 5 videos, with 4 of them being full length Feldenkrais lessons. This is lesson #3.

Another gem from our tireless benefactor; some substantial positive changes in the way my hips felt after completing this sequence, which he thoroughly explained. I find that going slowly and focusing attention on each movement is key to improvement. Without this, it's a bit like a musician playing scales without listening to the notes. vielen Dank, Alfons!

Your classes are wonderful , this is so much better than trying to learn from books .The gentleness of Feldenkrais movement is attainable for those with restrictions in movement in this case my stiff hips .It helps to re-introduce movement where other therapies are too extreme . There are no Feldenkrais teachers where I live so without you I would not be able to learn Feldenkrais movement Posting these lessons is a blessing , Thankyou Alfons !

Alfons! Once again, thank you! This was a simply terrific class! Can something so simple, so subtle, so playful, be so effective? I answer: YES OH MY, IT'S TRUE! I come to the floor, my beloved floor, each day now, with a new sense of wonder, of FUN! I only wish that there was a Feldenkrais practitioner in my area. Meanwhile I must thank you for ALL that you do! I am so grateful that you are on the planet!

This is a fascinating series. Sometimes with the shoulder/neck lessons my right side feels comically larger than my right. But with this one I had my strongest sense yet of being completely balanced between left and right even though there was a difference in the performance of the movements between the two sides. At a rest point about 2/3 of the way through the lesson, my sense of 'mind' or awareness shifted from my head to my lower abdomen. That was very cool! It lasted for more than half a minute. I am so grateful for these videos! Mit vielen, vielen Dank!

This was an interesting lesson. I've done it twice because I think I will teach it in my ATM class tomorrow. I found I had to do a lot of modification to adjust for my cranky/ouchy disc problems, and to hold my pelvis quite still while bringing both knees up (otherwise it impinged on my lumbar vertebrae). But as with all Feldenkrais lessons, they are designed to be done as we need to do them, feeling our way through. Thx!!

This is a great lesson. I feel how much I am disconnected to my body, but now that I can feel it, I will be more aware that I can do something about it. This is so great and relaxing. Since I discover your work, I practice a little every day, few awareness movements. I love to do them slower that I would usually other exercices. These I see them as repair, as learning, lessons to connect to my body. I just am completly amaze at the feeling of all the wires and bones and muscle and organs that I want to dicover and enjoy. Thank you so much, this is enriching this human experience tremendously.

Like the previous classes, I loved these movements. Really noticed the difference in standing after this class and the more fluid movements of bringing the knees closer to the chest at the end. I fell down stairs 2 years ago and since then the discomfort has been acute, I've tried every kind of treatment, osteopathy, physio, acupuncture and nothing works like Feldenkrais. I love the full body reorganising! After this lesson I feel tall and light when walking... my feet feel very flat on the floor, and weight balanced between legs - my back flat and long, all pelvic tension and discomfort is relieved.:). Thank you so much. I will definitely follow more of your lessons and send in a question. Thanks again.

When I woke up this morning my right hip was screaming. After doing this lesson my hip quieted down and now I can walk fairly well without discomfort. By the way, I’m in love with the floor. I even took a nap on the floor yesterday, which was just as good as being on my bed ... even better. Contemplating this, I remembered how my grandfather used to lie on the floor for a nap after lunch. And my father's favorite thing was to do the same. So I guess I’m a third generation floor lover.

I've been following your lessons for a short while and am enjoying them, and so far all have helped a lot. Thank you! I've had some issues for quite a while with the left hip at the joint and surrounding area, and when I'm lying on the floor it feels as though the whole pelvis is twisted a bit (counterclockwise?) so that my right iliac crest is higher than my left iliac crest. When laying down the left hip joint also feels lower, closer to the floor than the right side, the two legs when lying on the floor feel different on the floor. Also when standing the left side sometimes looks higher (at iliac crest) than the right, and sometimes it feels as though the left leg is longer! When that happens it's uncomfortable. Sounds crazy. Are there any exercises to help correct this?

My pelvis and spine haven't felt this relaxed and at ease in a long long time :) I have a question - I have pain on the top of my right foot, and it increased with foot flexion. I tried your sciatica movement lesson and found great relief for the day in that pain. It did come back though. Can I add that lesson before or after to your hip movement series? Do you recommend looking at another one? Have suffered from lower back pain for 3+ years. Thanks a ton!!!

There's the official lessons, which are crafted quite precisely. I study them like they are. But for my own home, freestyle practice I just combine all sorts of movements, whatever comes to my mind. Or whatever seems to help me for specific questions of problems. Darn body mechanics, always something to take care of ! ;-)

Thanks, this one is great. I have extreme clicking and popping in my right shoulder and this seems to have popped it back into the place where it's supposed to go. My whole right side has been a mess for ages, with a general sense of being compressed and sunk inward. I have anterior pelvic tilt on that side and my shoulder has limited range of movement in most directions. I always struggle to bend my foot back on the little toe side and I often have a similar weakness in bending back my fifth finger and that side of the wrist. After lengthening the spine something seemed to wake up in my little toe and the ankle began bending more evenly. My right wrist is freer too. Are there nerves in common with the toes and fingers or something? I always found it weird that I usually have a similar restriction for both the hand and foot on that side. It's very odd to feel both loosen at the same time.

surprising! and fascinating 😊👍 thank you for sharing your observations and thoughts! hm I’m no modern anatomy expert, but when we surround ourselves only with small animals we tend to think that we are so big there cant possibly be connections all the way from head to toe (or hand to foot). But then, a giraffe, elk, or elephant also have all these connections! For anatomy tips, google “anatomy + Stephen Levin” or Jean-Claude Guimberteau

@@ImprovingAbility yeah, there definitely seems to be some kind of a link. I've been looking for ages to try to figure out what my root problem is and I think now that it may well be that I'm getting squashed on that side because I don't usually push the heel out enough (possibly due to that slightly dead feeling on the little toe side). Are there any similar but shorter exercises? I'll try doing this a few times first to see if I can make a lasting change, but it would be good to have something short and quick that I could do every day, if necessary.

Freut mich sehr, gratuliere ! LG

When doing the side bend I find my head doesn't slide easily on the carpet. so I put a piece of lino under my head and shoulders. That slides more easily but my neck muscles hurt. I must be working them too hard? How do you suggest sliding the head as easily as you are doing? Where are you initiating the bend from? Even without the side bend this lesson is so helpful and good fun! :)

Everybody seems to know what to do. I didn't - was the long spine meant with: pressing the lower part of the back onto the floor? LWS with floorcontact? and even when pulling knees up - no tilt=movement of the pelvis? I tried with "normal" spine - made my pelvis tilt very much, with "long" spine not so much. I think I feel differently after the lesson that before - thank you Alfons for guiding us through these times of seeking some enlightment, perhaps it comes to me in one of the other lessons ;)

Great sharing, thank you! A sign of “learning is happening” indeed is that questions arise. So at first the mere appearance of questions is more important than the answers. I can’t detail an answer here, but if the spine LWS is flexed and pressed against the floor then it is flexed, curved, and thus not as long as in “neutral”.... keep asking, answers are inside you and all around...

Hi Daniel, this lesson is about the 5 lines of the body and preparing ourselves for standing, that's why we include the feet (as in a Bio-Tensegrity structure). If this explanation is not precise enough, could you please specify your question? Is your question why we do dorsi-flexion and not plantar-flexion? Or is your question more general, why humans have feet (anatomically)?

HI Alfons love your hip lessons. Question pls: Many struggle to hold leg up in air. Is there a way to prep for this? Of coarse take many breaks, but I am wondering what is getting in the way? Sometimes it looks like allot of extension in low back, sometimes it looks like grabbing in the belly and hip flexors? Maybe both? Maybe blanket under pelvis? Pls tell me your thoughts, I have tried this things , but I am asking but curious what you think. Thank you , Dar

if it‘s ok for the lower back you could indeed either stuff a towel under your hip joint (in between the very bottom of the bottom and the floor) or squeeze your hand (fist) in there. This will tilt the pelvis backwards (posterior) and it will be easier to keep the leg up. And yes, you can try anything that helps and also modify the lesson (for example do some parts in side-lying). As long as you know what is the purpose/theme of the lesson... be creative :)

Hi, thank you for using the comment section. In this way I can see your reaction to the video, answer questions in public, and communicate. This is a big question you're asking, btw! The most important step, however, is already done: YOUR interest in YOURSELF and your movements, and in how you produce movement, and what you can do YOURSELF to counter problems. And problems WILL arise with the human body. Life is a story of victories and defeats, and this process will continue until the very last second. Thanks for watching, best greetings! Alfons

Feldenkrais with Alfons thank you. And I know my muscles are tight because I don't get enough magnesium we live in a country that takes way too much calcium which ends up in our bloodstream. Instead of going into our bones if you got high blood pressure you can be sure that you could possibly be taking too much calcium and to rectify this you have to take vitamin D3 and K2 what the K2 does it transports the calcium into the bones where it belongs. But lately I have been reading about magnesium and how we don't get enough. Calcium works as a stimulant for the muscles and magnesium works as a relaxant and lately my muscles have been so tight and cramping. So along with exercise stretching and proper nutrition and minerals we can improve
