Hip Hop And Streaming | Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj | Netflix

On the latest episode of Patriot Act, Hasan dissects how the rise of music streaming on platforms like KZread, Spotify, and SoundCloud has influenced the sound, reach, and impact of modern day hip hop. While streaming technology has led to the commercial viability of SoundCloud rappers, it is simultaneously enabling rap as a viable form of protest against oppressive regimes around the world.

I have to admit, before knowing Hasan's work, I thought he was just having momentum and would fade away in no time, but I see the man does his homework, he's freaking brilliant and definitely a hard worker. His Netflix show "Homecoming King" is one of the most compelling stand-ups I have ever seen. As an immigrant, his speech (and eye contact) spoke to my soul. Sky is the limit Hasan, keep up the amazing work. I am undeniably one of your biggest fans.

asdf sometimes, you have to get your homework from different sources. When the commenter says that he does his homework, he means that he likes the way that his jokes fall in well with the given topics with the context still being correct. Like his joke on med school in the Caribbean. In this joke, there is a combination of the struggle of a problem that occurs quite often when a student wants to go to med school because of the pressure from his parents about the future, but the student cannot go to a prestigious med school in the USA so he goes to the Caribbean med school as they require less stats from this student. This whole situation is a very relatable struggle that lines up well with the situation he setup from the topic he was supposed to talk about. You need to have actual intellect that goes beyond listening to just what he said, just looking for a funny group words to laugh at, what you need to understand some of his jokes is the ability to actually imagine and -listen- to what he is -referring to-

I, too, have begun to learn about dueling rhymes with two lyrical poets. These are wonderful illustrations of Socratic dialogues; perhaps a resurgence of Shakespearean sonnets. It is indeed a wonderful discovery for one of my advanced age.

It's funny that the core message of hip hop is always said to be dying here in mainstream America, but it's becoming the foundation of revolution and resistance around the planet. So in a way, Hip Hop is dead, but it's being reborn by our new generation all across the world.

I don’t believe this to be true as hip-hop has become such a big genre. The music scene is saturated with “meaningless music” that people don’t try to find American hip-hop with meaning. There are still people underground and in the mainstream that are political and challenging the government but everyone just like to focus on the lowest part which is Pump and “mumble rap”

John Banks everything? Lol no way not everything. There’s plenty of songs that are dumb and fun and that’s perfectly fine. Hip hop doesn’t have to justify its existence as a genre by claiming to always have a message. If other genres can have simple fun songs, hip hop shouldn’t be treated any differently (yet it is).

Hi, I'm from Spain and I have some things to say about "article 578" (which is the Article 578 of the Spanish Penal Code, the second most important law behind the Constitution), together with another law (Ley de Seguridad Ciudadana -Citizen Security Act) known locally as the "ley mordaza" ("Gagging Act"), both approved in 2015 under the conservative Government of Mariano Rajoy (who is famous for his involuntary humour, I don't know if there is any English compilation of his quotes, but he has a lot of funny quotes). Basically: -Any kind of criminal act going against the Government or any institution is terrorism. (LSC) -Pasively or actively resisting an order from a member of the security forces (police or Civil Guard) is an "attack on authority" (article 550 SPC). -Unauthorised public protests are "public disorders" and taking part of them in a big crowd or with the face covered raises the penalty up to 6 years of prision (article 557 SPC). -In adition, calling for protests or "reinforcing the decision of commiting public disorders" is also punishable (Article 559) Also, there is a circular argument between the articles 571 SPC (which declares "terrorist organisation" any group of people who are wanting to commit a crime of terrorism) and the article 573, which says that any public disorder will be terrorism "if commited by a terrorist organisation"). For more information, this blog of a Spanish lawyer (though it's in Spanish): asihablociceron.blogspot.com/2015/04/triada-de-mordazas-iii-la-lsc.html

@H A She's not been 'getting darker', that's her natural complexion. When she was in Victorious they had whitened her skin through products and lighting, and ever since she's been an independent artist she's kept her natural complexion. And how exactly is she co-opting hip hop? She's dated two rappers: Big Sean and Mac Miller, you know there's a bunch of other boys she's dated right? Pete is the most recent but she's dated Ricky Alvarez, a dancer, and Austin Mahone a singer and other actors. So if you date 2 rappers in your lifetime you're co-opting hip hop? Also, her songs do NOT have a primarily hip hop groove. It's just 7 Rings that has a hip hop feel to it, if you listen to the rest of the album it's pure pop with reggae, r&b tones to it. I get that Hassan was saying it as a joke, but you seem to have some vendetta against her.

Every episode just keeps getting better and better! Thank you for making this amazing show! It would be so great if you did a show on Venezuela. There is a plethora of misinformation being spread about our humanitarian crisis. Maduro is definitely more than just “kinda annoying.”

wish i could comment all at once on your episodes, but what a great show you do...especially deep dives into topics i didnt know about like indian elections i am not used to your style of giving presentations with the loud talking and the animated body and hand movements...but i see how you get your point across...sharp wit! sometimes it does seem like your audience laughs too easily at certain things...but hey everyone is different.... keep going!!

I've never really given it much thought, but Turkmenistan really looks like a beautiful country, at least along that coastline. Horrible rapping politicians, but beautiful scenery. What a trade-off.

Turkmenistan is about 95% desert, and while that is beautiful in its own way, it has its drawbacks. (It's also larger than California but with the population of Wisconsin.)

You should give Algerian rap a listen, during this year's protests against the corrupt government many rappers contributed with amazing songs that we took as anthems, for example : female rapper rajaa meziane's allo system and soolking's la liberté

Growing up as a Hispanic, 1st generation American in a largely white area I was often criticized for the way I spoke, dressed, and for the hip hop that I listened to. Now to see it be the forefront of the world is amazing. This is absolutely one of the best episodes yet. Hasan is very intelligent on the way he delivers his message. Great job.
