The only hip-hop group I've ever heard of that toured with the support of a full orchestra, who also "restrung" (remixed) two albums-worth of their songs. The vid for "I'm a Ghost (Restrung)" captures this perfectly. "Fifty in Five" is a masterpiece (and "State of the Art" is one of my favorite albums of all time). It's written over a sample of a song from 1967 ("Twenty-Ten" by Tinkerbell's Fairydust) that pondered what life would be like in 2010. The Hilltop Hoods' answer, fifty years of history in five minutes (written in 2009), is pretty shameful. Great storytellers ("Stopping all Stations", which they rewrote the ending for the Restrung version so it's not quite as dark), lots of just fun songs ("Nosebleed Section" or "Clown Prince"), but their more serious songs can hit like a gut-punch, like "Through the Dark", or "Breathe". Tons of bars that'll stick in your head. Also, to any hip-hop fans, check out "Rattling the Keys to the Kingdom" for a glimpse of the Aussie hip-hop scene, or any of the "Golden Era Records Cyphers" for their entire label's members (all of whom are great). 2014's probably my favorite. So much good Aussie hip-hop nobody knows of.

Hilltop Hoods from my hometown of Adelaide, Australia. They've got quite some accessible albums but for track wise, you should try: - The Nosebleed Section - Catch That Feeling - Still Standing - Cosby Sweater - I Love It (feat Sia.) Another two Aussie Hip-Hop groups that did well in the 00's are: - Funkoars - Bliss N Eso It was a very underground sound but a few did really well at chart success.

@@TeezMcGee yeah, they haven't really broken through in the US much though, I don't think. They have a bit of a following in Europe and Canada, but very popular in Australia. They have a song with Sia, called I Love It, and another called Chase That Feeling, which were big hits.

@@klausbremner_autotelic_art I think I heard an interview that DJ Debris was banned from entering the U.S., so they never got traction here by touring. I only found them through a DJ mix that had a few HH songs included, gave it to a DJ friend of mine, and he found all their albums from "State of the Art" back to the beginning, and gave them to me. We've pushed them on anyone that would listen since. Just from all the mixtape shout-outs, the hip-hop community worldwide seems to know them well. Getting Chali 2na and Black Thought to guest spot on "Drinking from the Sun" was a real treat for me when it came out. Legends.

Their song Through The Dark is amazing. It is some heavy content (MC Pressure wrote it for his kid who was undergoing cancer treatment) but it is a lyrical and vocal masterpiece. 50 in 5 is another amazing song, draws together 50 years of history in 5 minutes.

  • @louislynge

Leave me Lonely is a great track of theirs. But all of Hilltop Hoods are amazing. Aussie hip hop is more uplifting and party / old school beats. We tend to take the piss more and make fun of things rather than taking ourselves seriously.. I love Aussie Hip Hop!
