After changing a head gasket a week (OK maybe a slight exaggeration), a guy I knew who worked at Roots, said stop using any old head gasket, buy a Reinz, I did and had no more problems.

That head has maybe been skimmed once (if at all). Perfectly good to go again. I have rebuilt many Imp engines over the past 30+ years.

Correct. You can see the chamber edge step on the shallow side which tells you it's not been skimmed to death. I've been building them for 45 years...

80% of this is just for dramatic tv effect. Those of us that really know the Imp engine know how good they are. There is a good reason why an Imp won the British saloon car championship three years in a row. (And it was one car, not a new one each season). Ever heard of Coventry Climax?

Notorious engines for warping heads leading to major issues. I was told that warping was caused more by two factors: The engine actually had some grunt and could be pushed hard and often was. The problem came when drivers kept the throttle wide open for long periods of time. Yes shorter blasts of full throttle could be done but keep it open and the engine broke. To me the Imp was a car that could have been so much more. As a manufacturer they actually made some OK stuff during their time.

The rear compartment was a real hotbox. When Rootes competition department used them in rallies, they jacked the rear panel open slightly.

If I had a dollar for every time I had to take the head off my old Imp I'd be driving a Bugatti Chiron today :-)

It really needed a cast Iron head. I had mine planed which helped a bit but I was buying gasket sets at a rate of knots.

@@mbak7801 A cast-iron head would have made things worse due to the markedly different COTEs of aluminium and cast iron.

Back in the day, I knew a guy who transplanted a Honda S800 engine into an Imp, machined his own transaxle/engine adapter......went like the proverbial s**t off a shovel.

Hilarious ...this head has been skimmed several times......er yes its an imp engine...useless and high maintenance engines given old gaskets and rusty liners

No it hasn't. Excellent engines let down by owners who don't use antifreeze all the year round, don't check their coolant levels, don't bother keeping the rad matrix clean and get Geoff Capes to tighten the fanbelts which knackers the water pump bearings. The same owners who then whinge about 'useless Imp engines'.
