Hillary Clinton, Malala Yousafzai talk "Suffs" on Broadway

"Suffs" (short for suffragists) is a new Broadway musical about women's fight more than a century ago for a "radical" idea: the right to vote. Correspondent Martha Teichner talks with two of the show's producers, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, about the importance of art to spread a political message. She also talks with cast members, including the show's writer and star Shaina Taub, who says "Suffs" has a timely message: "Every generation has to fight to protect these rights and freedoms again and again and again."

It would have been good to point out that the majority of Democrats voted against the 19th Amendment. That it was driven by Republicans, like every other piece of Civil Rights legislation. This was just fawning Democrat propaganda.

I learned about slavery, women's suffrage, Jim Crow, the civil war all of it in school in the 70s and 80s. I also learned how the constitution and the will of the American people of all walks of life corrected them. The only thing holding us all back now is identity politicals and a new obsession with race and gender that is tearing this country apart in the name of social justice.

This was so interesting and revealing - we are still fighting for women's rights. In case some haven't noted - Rs are trying to take us BACK to the days before suffrage started....look at what they're doing to our reproductive rights! Whether you agree or not with abortion at least shouldn't the 'right' be there? So if you don't want it then don't have one but some other women may NEED to have one - should she be prosecuted for trying to do what's best for her??? Plus they're trying to take on birth control (by taking it away)and the list goes on. Rs don't seem to want women to have the SAME rights as men do. We must NOT go backwards and this show will push us forward into the future by reminding us of what happened in the past.

And they're so inept at writing legislation that the laws they made actually hurt women who are trying to have children. OB-GYN's are leaving states because they don't want to be sued. "Life of the mother" means a woman has to be near dying to get help. It's insane, and exactly what The Handmaid's Tale was about.

What a stupid comment, Bradley. What part of this do you have an issue with? It’s the story of how women had to fight for basic rights and the right to vote. It’s a great story and the vocals and music are fantastic. Don’t like Hilary? Fine. But she didn’t create it. She helped this project get Broadway. What part of this do you have a problem with?

As someone who took drama throughout his Junior High and Highschool career; I find these “historical musicals,” anything but historical. They not only dumb down historical events but they pose a certain propagandist worldview that distracts the public from the real issues. Yes, musical theater can be important to and an important aspect of culture but as far as portraying significant historical events they seem to be a bit too preachy.

But I thought Gore was kind of an aloof/arrogant rich guy, and Ralph Nader suited my politics more. My state wasn't a swing state so my vote really didn't make a difference, but now I don't vote for the personality, just the character and agenda.
