Hill Pulaya Attom

The traditional dance of Hill Pulaya (Malappulaya) is known as ‘Attam’. It is one of the gorgeous tribal dance ofKerala. Hill Pulaya is a tribal community living in Devikulam taluk of Idukki district. It is believed that they had been migrated from Tamil Nadu State. They are worshipping of Goddesses like Mariamman, Kaliamman, Meenakshi and so on. Attam is rhythmic dance performed by this community during their religious festival to propitiating goddesses. Musical instruments like Chikuvadyam, Urumi (like thudi Instrument), kidimutti, , flute, and kuzhal (wind instrument),etc are accompanied for HillPulaya attam. Both Male and female together participating this dance. The men tied their heads with cloth. Covering the waistand chest with a single chela/ saree and is known as Koorakkett. Women wear jewelry and the hair is combed and flowers aregathered on the head. The dance begin with the perusing of wind instrument kuzhal. This dance is performed with support of tunes of musical instruments only. Song or singer is absent in attam. Hill Pulaya attam is a sport with a lot of physical activity.
