Hill Forts, Gliders and Wells! the Royal Enfield Classic 350 Finds them all
Hill Forts, Gliders and Wells! the Royal Enfield Classic 350 Finds them all
It’s amazing how much history is all around us. On this ride we look at late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age hill forts, one of them now being used as a glider airfield.
Today the boarder between Yorkshire and Derbyshire is tranquil with people out enjoying the countryside.
In the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age it was a hotbed of conflict between two ancient tribes. The Corieltauvi to the south and the Brigantes to the north. The name Brigantes means high or elevated, like the Pennines and high moorland all around. Fortified hillforts are all along this frontier overlooking the lower plains.
One is now home to a glider club, a much more peaceful occupation.
To more modern years Betsy found the well-used to keep the plague quarantined in Eyam.
Grab your cuppa and let’s ride.
Ride safe,
Dave

Today we say: "Wow, look at that view", but if you were a marching Legionnaire on a cold rainy day 2000 years ago, (looking at that scene) you would probably be saying: "Jeez,... have we gotta cross that bloody bog?"
Bandit country? You'll be making the Lancastrians feel very uneasy, Dave! 🤣 Thank you for all the little historical snippets; useless triva's actually not useless at all, in fact it's always very interesting. Add in the wonderful scenery and it makes for a delightful ride. The silver birch and bluebells reminded me of the woods at the back of our house when I was a kid, back in the early 1950's. 👍
The Glider Club was a regular stop off for a drink of coffee from our flasks! Little gate at the far end you passed by, watching any gliders taking off! A good few years since we’ve been and I was surprised to see that the diversion at the far end was still there! We used to turn left! 👍
Every one of your videos are like a trip into history Just fantastic best motorcycle virtual tours Thanks
Amazing views and history lesson! Betsy is the perfect bike for the task. Thank you!
Some beautiful scenery for sure. Makes a person wish they could enjoy the smells as well. 🙂
It's a beautiful area. I do like riding there. Eyam's on my list. Interesting history for sure.
A great ride around the Hathersage area. It really is nice around there. 👍
All our area we've done on bike and car love it.. tnx for the memories it's been a while 👍

Hello Dave and Roy 👋. As you say, what a stunning landscape.
Lovely tour and history!
Lovely video, thanks for that. I love doing tiny lanes on my 350. Next time you are near Skipton I recommend the road from Starbotton to Aysgarth. Wiggly roads and then round a corner and the whole valley opens up before you.
Betsy can certainly find some stunning places, those little tree lined lanes are beautiful. Plenty of history around also to go and see. Really enjoyed that, cheers👍
An extraordinarily nice ride, this one!! I have added getting to ride on some of these same lanes to my bucket list of things to do while I'm still able.
Great video and commentary, brilliant views 👏👏
That is Stanedge, Millstone is of to you left. Still a great place.
I love your videos! I have a Classic 350 (Halcyon Green rather than Halcyon Black), and the vibe is absolutely spot-on for the motorcycle. I feel like everybody should be watching these videos and realizing what motorcycling is really all about. Thank you for the video!

Hi, you're right, there is a lot more to motorcycling than going fast. Please feel free to share the channel on any social media you have. Ride safe, Dave
Another great entertaining video I can’t wait for another day when I’ve some spare time to ride up there I used to ride often up there and pass the gliding club up to the Barrel Inn at Bretton before they closed the road , Stunning for sure 🤟
Dave I am tempted to say that this must be your most spectacular ride ever but as I feel that about every ride you do 😂😂

Absolutely brilliant ride, and terrific commentary, Bloke on a Motorbike. The history is fascinating. And thanks to Peter for directing me to this channel and this video.
Another very interesting ride. It's good to learn and pass on knowledge of local places, it keeps our history alive. 👍
Brilliant video, embarrassed to say my stomping ground but not ridden many of those lanes. Drop me a note if you’re coming this way again so I can buy you a coffee & cake somewhere

I can send you the route if it would help. When are you heading to here
Oh no! Please don't tell anyone about coming to these terrible places. I'm forced to ride here every week because I live so close but innocent people don't have to suffer like me 😉.

I know, these roads and views are just terrible, not worth going at all. That's why I have to come back time after time just telling myself it's not worth it 😭 Ride safe, Dave
