Hilda is honestly the most beautiful cartoon I've seen, even though it's not overly detailed or realistic, it expresses itself with a quaint simplicity and limit of colour while avoiding total minimalism. it was very nice to see your drawing studies of the style.

Thank you, and I totally agree! It's so warm and pleasing to look at. I really enjoyed seeing how the art style constantly shifted as the comics were developed.

Part of the reason it looks so good as well is that it had a solid team on a high budget. Nobody put out film-level quality for animated shows until Netflix came along.

The look of the show is what drew me to watch it. There is nothing I respect more than the brilliant use of color in animation. And while I can never figure out why it might be brilliant, I know brilliant color usage when I see it. And when I saw Hilda, I could just tell it was something special. Something unique with it's animation and color.

A really great analysis! I also wanted to add on something cool I noticed regarding the characters, specifically the main trio Hilda, David and Frida. The colours used on them before was blue, red, yellow, and orange. Hilda’s clothes are made up of primary colours, while David’s are made up of the one secondary colour, orange. This was to show how Hilda and David are opposites with her being more adventurous and him being more fearful. And Frida’s clothes are a combination of the same blue and orange, likely to present her as a sort of equaliser of the two that posses both of their qualities. Now in season three, David and Frida’s colours drastically changed. David’s shirt, rather than the secondary colour, orange it’s the same blue as Hilda’s hair. This was likely done to show his development in becoming more adventurous like Hilda. And Frida’s clothes are now grey, white and purple which is the exact same palette as the Librarian Witch, Kaisa. This was also likely done to show her development in becoming a more powerful witch. I could be misinterpreting it but I thought it’d be something nice to mention.

This is a great observation! I did not pick up on the symbolism during my first watch 😲 To be honest, I may revisit how the colours have shifted and changed in Season 3 as well. There's a lot of awesome things to discuss! 😄

The color palettes were also one of the first things I noticed and really liked about Hilda. It reminded me a bit of the early two-strip Technicolor process that was used in film in the 1920's. It had a red-orange and cyan-blue color palette, which is a lot of what HIlda has. It's just aesthetically pleasing to me.

Loved this analysis! I never watched this show but the art style is sooo gorgeous and I'm really fascinated with how they handled the color pallet from day to night. It works really well with the extremely light/pastel scenes (maybe early morning?) that are almost a bit washed out but in a masterful way. Also loved the demo at the end, and that reference photo is perfection! 😍

Daniel, this is great content. I always wanted to watch Hilda because of its color palette. Allow me to list of shows whose colors looked inspiring: 1. Jackie chan adventures. (For example the colors leave the outline and it still loos nice) 2. Totally Spies ( The shiny vibe of beverly hills, even when they travel across the world, the shony vibe is till there) 3. Bare bear (The colors are magnificent ) 4. One piece (Romance dawn era, just look into the color of the ocean and then the color of green chosen in Nami arc). Nice work.!!

It should be mention that the show kinda went out of the way to avoid using as much green as possible. Yes they still used green but it was like Earthly green. It was only the Marra debut episode that they first used bright green aka the Marra magic!

Very interesting and your recreation of the colour palette was very informative. One question however I don't know if you'll see the comment, but why did you decide to use a darker colour for the door and fire escape when they were brighter than the brick wall in the day version? Sorry if you mentioned it and I missed it but I'm not understanding

Why does Hilda have natural blue hair? It’s probably because Hilda’s oldest ancestor in Medieval times was thirsty after a long adventure panting! The Prince drank blue magic potion out of the cauldron thinking it’s water from the well! Once he is refreshed, he didn’t know what’s about to change in him! The Prince slept and his hair roots and his whole hair changed from blond to light teal blue! He woke up and realizes his hair changed color which stays on permanent! The blue hair trait passed down to his sons, daughters and newer generations of family members including Hilda’s father although the mother named Johanna has brown hair! The couple met in high school and when they got together, there is a rare condition that their then upcoming child will have blue hair like the father! Johanna gave birth to Hilda who was born with blue hair when Johanna was 21 years old Father left Hilda and Johanna when Hilda was a toddler or preschooler Apparently Hilda has extended family who have the same hair color as Hilda!
