when thorpe park first tested colossus exactly the same thing happened with the sand bags they were using, there's a version of this coaster also with lap bars in Italy, it's a proven design, it's not really a new coaster at all, just new for this park, so there is nothing wrong with the design and it will be fine with people riding it, most lap bar designs rely on the fact that humans have bones in their legs that will stop us falling out.

@GoThemeParks

Yea people are surprisingly solid, takes 4 of us to shut flip flop on steve. Once the lapbar is shut your not going anywhere! To put this into perspective most coasters exert a force of between 3-4G, a really intense one might hit 5G. In a fighter jet in extreme maneuvers I believe they hit 9G at the top end, that is enough to make most people pass out. However even that isn't enough to rip limbs off. So definitely no way your coming out of those restraints.

@@GoThemeParks those figures of 3-5g will usually be downwards g force, airtime or even ejector airtime wouldn't usually exceed 2g, same for lateral g force, any coaster exceeding that would feel horrible and uncomfortable and basically be poorly designed. I think tbf 4g of ejector airtime on a lap bar could potentially break bones, it would be the equivalent of about 200kg trying to break your knees in half.

They calculated the correct speed of the lift hill to take its layout at the perfect pace. Not too fast being too intense and uncomfortable, but enough to thrill and give good forces. @@Dannyjones1 Speed matters less and less at lower values. There is vastly less energy going from 0-1 KM/h than from 29-30 KM/h. So technically you're right that it matters to the physics, but not in a meaningful way (if it made a difference, the ride is already a failure).

I was theming designer on Thorpe Park's Colossus (amongst many other Tussauds Rides) back in 2002 and when I watched the first tests almost exactly the same this happened with the sandbags we used at the time. Many sandbags lost their lives on that heartline roll and the train didn't even complete the circuit to begin with though it was a cold, windy night and that didn't help. Probably not helped by being gummed up by sand too.

Sounds pretty tense, must have been strange to see it stop without completing the course. I have a theory about the dummies in the video. If you notice that the dummies don't start falling out until the third car. It feels like whoever was in charge of filling the dummies with water may have gotten a little bored half way through. The ones at the back look particularly floppy, like they haven't been filled with enough water to retain their shape.

Soo, about the dents....
Speaking more generally--in the cases where a person does fall out of a ride, like that poor kid on the drop tower in Orlando recently, the problem is almost never that the restraint came unlatched. It's that it was latched in a position where it was not adequately holding in the rider in the first place. Most often, this happens with larger riders, but it's not their fault for being big--it's some sort of design or maintenance error that allows the restraint to latch, and the ride to dispatch, in an unsafe position. There actually was one accident I know of that was somewhat similar to this footage--it was a case of a double amputee without complete legs who was allowed to ride a coaster with lap bar restraints. He never should have been allowed to ride, because this type of restraint requires the rider to have legs. These dummies don't.

@DrCranberry

This is true, a LOT of coasters either use Hydraulic systems, or Ratchet systems (the clicking you hear pulling the lap bar down). Some even use a combination of Hydraulic and Ratchet backups. The point being, is that a Ratchet system is literally impossible to undo mid ride. Even IF a tooth for some reason is completely sheared clean (your literally asking something not designed for it to shear through an inch of steel which is already almost impossible), the ratchet would literally just fall back to the next tooth and hold it. If you want an actual physical example of this design, lift hills use the same thing on their chaindogs to prevent rollbacks and hold the car. Hydraulic Systems use hydraulic fluid and are safe as well, as the way they work is that the lapbar being up puts more pressure on the system then being down, I.E the lapbar WANTS to go down and hold it as theres less pressure acting on it.

Jokes aside, i had been on the same model somewhere else and the heartline rolls really pin you under your lap bars and aggressively swing your upper body hanging under the harness a lot when you are upside down. I had a really minor neckache and backache after the ride but it was worth the experience. I loved the ride so that I rode twice.
