Hiking Up To Nordic Skate On Tumbledown Pond
The first bodies of water to freeze in Maine are the mountain ponds. Ever since I got into skating I've always wanted to skate on Tumbledown Pond, and a cold but snowless December finally made for the perfect conditions! We hiked up the Brook Trail on Tumbledown Mountain, and carried our nordic skates in our pack. As for the ice conditions--they couldn't have been better! While skating conditions on these remote ponds are fleeting, they are extremely special.

Hiked up alone with my figures skates in January 1980, enjoyed some solitary skating
This is slick! Can't wait to get the gear and try this in Montana.

Thanks so much, John!!
Amazing place and conditions for skating. I live in Ukraine, there is a lake near me but such ice conditions might happen very rarely probably 1 out of 5 years. Thank you for the video.

Yeah, good skating ice can be quite rare! Thanks for watching our video. And best wishes in Ukraine--our thoughts are with you!
That is the bomb! Perfect day all around and what a great way to enjoy it. Dude, how did you resist camping up there? Staying a few days would have been awesome.

Thank you! And it’s coming soon!
How long did it take to hike up tumbledown, an ice safety video would be great and where to find the ice poles/nordic skates as well, i wonder if my cross country ski boots would work as skating boots as well

It took us just under an hour to get up it, although we were hiking very fast (in-between filming stops). As for places to find the gear, I recommend Nordic Skater-a shop in New Hampshire. Most XC ski boots will work, but stiffer skate ski boots are best.
Wow this was great--beautiful scenery and an into to nordic skating!

Loved this story. I have hiked up Tumbledown several times during the warmer months but this makes me want to go in the wintertime!

Roughly how far of a hike is it?
I love this! Opening music does sound like a horror film but the rest is lovely!

We got ours from Nordic Skater in New Hampshire, but I’ve heard BNS and maybe some of the ski shops have them?
Ice safety video, please!

It was pretty idyllic 😊
very nice. that said, i'd suggest at least wearing "ice picks" while wild skating 🙂

Agreed! You may not have been able to see them, but I always keep ice picks looped around my neck and just inside my outermost layer-easy to access but won’t get knocked off in a big fall!
