Hiking the Sharr Mountains in the Republic of Macedonia and Kosovo [Balkans Ep6]

This is another part of my 2017 summer backpacking trip, during which I visited lots of mountain ranges across the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
Here I spent four days exploring the Shar Planina- a mountain range located along the borders of Kosovo, Serbia, Albania and The Republic Of Macedonia.
My impromptu visit began in the town of Tetovo. I climbed the peaks of Titov Vrv and Ljuboten before continuing to the beautiful Prizren in Kosovo.
Despite being the scene of conflict during the 2001 insurgency in the Republic of Macedonia, and also featuring some rather rundown ski resorts, The Šar Mountains are stunning. I met lots of very friendly local people during my trip and the views were stunning!

I’m American and I say that Macedonia is one if not the most beautiful countries in Europe if not the world. I love Macedonia ❤️ 🇲🇰

Richard Hartfield geez, the whole country is incredible but definitely visiting Mount Vodno, the Kumamovo mountains in the afternoon in summer, it’s very beautiful, Ohrid, Struga, and Trpejka. It’s such a beautiful country and I’d love to explore more of the eastern side. Glad you enjoyed!

I was so thrilled to see this video! My village is somewhere between the Titov vrv and the mountains in the horizon at 5.26. I see that view from our house and it was awesome that I could recognize the mountain peaks from that distance!

Richard that mountain is pronounced loobo ten. I went up a few times from kosovo side when i worked there. You can follow the ridge all the way to Prizen or Dragash. The ski centre is still used. I've enjoyed a few beers and pizza there. Good video, it brought back the memories. Cheers

Kelli Rustin thanks Kelli. The one thing I regret is not being better at filming the people I meet. I usually only like to film during the times i’m alone, so my videos make the experience seem more lonely than it actually was!

I liked that shack at the end. Getting there was fabulous - what an awesome range. Glad I watched this because I felt your joy in it all - the people and space. I was also checking out your journey on google. Good going - hope you do return. Mark

It's a pleasure. I've got your Pyrenees video lined up - your first. My twin brother and I had planned to do this but sadly he's not with me. Don't mean to put a downer on it it's just the reality. I should enjoy it I think.

Richard Hartfield hello mate. looking forward to seeing your next video. I think you mentioned in a vid that you downloaded the PDFs of the guidebooks, Just wondered if you could let me know where you got them. Can't seem to find them on the web. 😀😀

Wayne Peplow hi Wayne. I can only imagine that was the guidebook for the HRP, in which case, I made a PDF myself by painstakingly scanning my annotated physical copy, page by page! I don’t actually have that PDF anymore. I’d encourage you to buy the guide, it also comes in ebook form ;)

Richard Hartfield that must have taken a while. I'm actually looking for the Chamonix to Zermatt haute route ebook. Apparently cicerone have stopped making ebooks. I've got the printed one so might have to do the same.

Hi Richard. Nice video, seems like a great adventure. I'm thinking on taking a trip to the Shar Mountains this summe. You said you where there for four days. Which trails did you choose. Was it safe up there? Cheers

Hi Daniel. As you can see in the video, I took the loop trail to titov vrv and then climbed ljuboten from the hut below. This would also make a lovely place to stay as the hut is very modern with good facilities etc. Yes I did feel safe, although I understand that landmines could be an issue in some areas if you were to go off trail, so be aware of that! Cheers
