Hiking the John Muir Trail: Clouds Rest & Half Dome

In the Fall of 2017 I set off on an adventure of a lifetime to thru hike the John Muir Trail. This is episode #1 that highlights the first 13 miles of the Trail in Yosemite National Park. I climbed the cables of Half Dome and took to higher altitudes at Clouds Rest. My first couple days on the JMT were pretty darn spectacular. Come and join me!

So my second grade teacher used to brag about how she climbed half dome and i never understood until I climbed Vernal Fall and felt like I was gonna die. Then I found videos like this. You can't imagine how much respect I have for her now.

Really like seeing a hike done at a pace that actually lets one see the area, views and terrain. I was getting tired of all the vids showing how far and how fast one can do a hike. Thanks for the info. Not dissing fast through hikers, simply stating that a lot of us like a more leisurely pace. Keep it up.

6:45 Yosemite is one of the most over crowded national parks. They have a very active and well staffed ranger corps and they absolutely DO check permits, and for very good reason. They are protecting the park from overuse.

For those interested in doing Half Dome from the valley floor, do what Bigfoot did, and plan it to camp before you summit the dome. The distance seems like a day hike, but the climb is rough and steep with lots of wet stone staircases that need to be taken slowly and carefully. There is a great campsite in Little Yosemite Valley behind the dome that makes a good halfway point. If you insist on trying to do this as a day hike, no matter how early you start, you will probably be doing some dangerous descent in the dark.

Great stuff. I've watched a lot of your videos. I was really looking forward to this one, because I'm planning to do the JMT next summer. I have a gear question. I noticed you use the Delorme in reach. Are you using this for actual navigation, or just for emergency communication? Are you recording a gps track as you go? I thought I heard you say that your solar charger was charging your gps. So, does the Delorme have a rechargeable battery in it? Really looking forward your upcoming videos. Thanks so much for sharing!

+Louis Richardson I'm using it to allow others to track me as well as a way to communicate to others like Miss Bigfoot how things are going when I don't have cell service. Then it's my emergency backup in the event anything ever goes wrong. The Delorme has a rechargeable battery. I like that more than batteries, much cheaper

Hi, Is it legal to leave your backpack, food canister and tent unattended in the wilderness while hiking the half dome? I don’t want to carry a 30lb backpack to hike up the half dome, but the official website of the park says that we can’t leave our things unattended unless is at little Yosemite valley campground.

+Khevin Black Toe the Pirate Watterson Because I had to stay at Little Yosemite Valley for the requirements of my permit and I go there so early, so I had like 8 hours of the day to explore. I was actually going to do both and hit Half Dome on the way back but I was too wiped.

+Larry Gee I intentionally did that as those were parts I either cut out of my vlog or parts that I had in later in the video. It sounded a little better have a little of the ambience of the background sounds than turning it off

+sgm1960 I did that intentionally using some of the clips that the audio that was hard to hear because of the wind. I am switching some things up on how I'm editing my upcoming videos as I upgraded my software. I wanted to do that 3 minute clip of the highlights of the day before I panned it over to the vlog

BF, this year national parks saw their highest visitation in NPS history, some 20% increase over last year, up to 50% increase over last two years, unsustainable increases. Hopefully, just a fad.
