Catalina Island, California is home to the beautiful Catalina Island Trail stretching for almost 40 miles from Avalon to the northern tip of the island, often being hiked in four days. While I hope to someday do the full trail, we did the northern half of it - a usually two day hike - in one long day.
Starting in the morning from Two Harbors at the Isthmus of the island, where Emma and I spent a week camping, we walked to the windward side of the island to Cat Harbor, then north beyond Torquemada and up to Silver Peak. I'd climbed Silver Peak before and knew the view would be well worth filming, but when we got up there, we found out that the mountain was closed!
Come along on this hike with us, ascending mountains and traversing beaches on this beautiful desert island, uncovering history and finding stunning views along the way.
My documentary on the Chinese pirate ship "Ning Po", sunk in Cat Harbor and mentioned in this video: • The Story of the "Ning...

I come to these videos for two reasons: 1) pretty scenery and 2) listening to Tom Lynskey give me a history lesson. And you know what? I was not disappointed in the slightest.
GREAT VIDEO!!!!

Well well well look who it is! Historic travels…………………………………
This was probably the best hiking videos I have EVER watched! The crescendo build up of burger talk and dressings at the end was just the literal icing on the cake. Can I request more hiking videos? I think you have a natural gift for exploring on foot and narrating, I was absolutely captivated from start to finish. (the same can be said of the Uncle Sam mine video) New sub!

Thank you! This is one of my lesser viewed videos, so I'm glad to hear it was enjoyed! Would love to do more of these.
Are you still involved with THG?
LOL the commentary on the burger was hilarious
You got an adventurous woman there, Tom. Emma is a good sport to tackle a two day walking trail with you in a day. Assuming she took the long distance shots. Down with Wikipedia for insensitivity towards the bison. Really enjoyed this.

@@PartTimeExplorer A good Nova Scotia lass won't let you down. Feed her and she'll walk to the ends of the earth. Time now for a bison burger.
You've forgotten more than I know. Really enjoy your videos.
Tom and Emma. Wow. Couple things. That was so beautifully filmed and narrated. Tom you make everywhere you go so much better than if I just went myself and didn't know the history. You bring such life and energy to everything you do. And Emma should talk more! Maybe even narrate some history herself! I think you two make a great pair. Could you quit your day jobs and do this full time? I promise to watch every video haha!!!
I would have been genuinely saddened if you didnt get your burger. Love Emma's...We did It!!!
It's in the low 30s with snow squalls here, my day off from work. I take a break from cleaning my house to enjoy an adventure that begins with a glimpse of Emma's lovely face. All of the stories, the commentary, (this young men set his own broken ankle! and they fine you for everything in California :) make this such a fascinating and wonderful video. I wonder if the crack in the earth at ballast point is from the active tectonic plates in the area. Thank you Tom and Emma!
Slight correction, 13:45, The Catalina Island Fox isn’t its own species. There’s a fox species native to Catalina Island and some of the nearby islands. However, on just about all of those islands, variations have arisen, and each island’s population is considered a subspecies. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_fox

The shell casing was a centerfire and more than likely a .38 special or larger. Great video.
I love your content, but this video was particularly inspiring. I think the concept of exploration versus a vacation is what fascinates me the most. Thank you for bringing us along! I always love emma's outfits 👒

Thank you for the lovely comment. This video is so buried on my channel that it’s nice to see someone enjoy it.
11:17 every where you find cactus on the side walk you can throw some water melon seeds, it will grow and could be useful for some one pass by, we as scouts used to do that in deserted islands hills (pure wilderness)
Ahh! Another trip adventure with Tom and Emma! So cinematic and relaxing...I can’t wait for warmer weather and unleash my adventurer self.💙💙💙 I think after a 7hr hike, you bet your bottom dollar a classic cheeseburger would be worth it. More trips dear sir! Please and thank you!💙💙💙
What a wonderful video. If you're ever back in the San Diego area you should check out the Midway, the maritime museum and Point Loma. Another interesting trip is to the desert training center where Patton's army trained for the invasion of North Africa.
Love the drone shots, your always a good youtuber for these things
Great video, I can't wait for the video documenting the Ning Po to come out!
Hey just FYI you can find gun caliber info on the rim of the shell casing with the primer in it. The casing you found looks like a .44 mag or .45 acp but definitely not a .22.
Just beautiful, what a wonderful young couple.
Another great video Tom!
Always great videos from you guys 🤙
I CANNOT believe that you did not mention John Wayne and his de-commissioned mine sweeper yacht "Wild Goose". A staple in the Catalina Harbors (Including being used in Movies). Still in operation out of Newport Harbor (Another John Wayne hangout). He even entertained 2 presidents on that ship!
Another great video by Tom Lynskey! Thank you for showing us Tom!
I love these videos, I always learn some new historical fact. Thanks for sharing Tom!
That masterpiece deserves much more views! Amazing drone shots! Awesome history lesson and hilarious moments! That gave me so much chill and showed me how another world looks like! Thanks and I'm waiting for more Tom!
I love this channel alot because this helped me so much 😍
Very cool content thank you! Watched your titanic livestreams, last signals movie, now this, awesome!
I like how this video starts out with Emma being someone just slightly in the background following you and ends with her being an integral, key character.
It wouldn’t be a Tom Lynskey video without some wine, tasty tasty wine.
I absolutely love the part where you're gushing over burgers. Bless. 😂
Awesome video dude, very informative! Almost as if we were there with you both!
Quite an adventure the two of you had! I haven't done much hiking myself, but the last hike I went on, was a trip to the Painted Hills, in central Oregon. It was a lovely time, but the length was nothing like this! I was very glad to see that you guys made it back in time to enjoy some food - I was thinking, "They probably won't make it back in time, at this rate." Glad to see I was proven wrong - you two earned it!
When I lived there, I had a friend that worked at The Airport in the Sky. I would sometimes catch a ride with him into the interior of the Island. He’d drop me off at some point and I’d hike around for hours until I either hiked or got a ride back into Avalon. Good times 😎
No body: Tom: here is how i like my cheeseburger..

I love you and all your work, but how about putting an 'Almost' in front of the title..? x) Who closes a peak, indeed. The feeling after a long day of walking with a grumpy stomach trying to picture food at the finish line could not have been better exhibited, lol. It was spot on, you brought back memories at least 15 years old from the reminiscent feeling alone! P.S. Bacon does not do a hamburger justice.
hey Tom, in the video talking about the Trupeter 1/200 model, you said something about delving into interior options on the store. Any idea how that’s going? (also when’s the new HistoBrick vid coming?)

So good
wait did you two get married??
It would be better to take the bison off the island and disperse them across Yellowstone, Custer State Park, and other ranches than to bring new ones to the island, frankly… I saw them when I was 11 in 2002, and they were looking pretty mangy back then. Having the uncle who single-handedly saved the Custer and Yellowstone herds from inbreeding problems back in the 70s and 80s, Burns Busskohl, and having grown up helping out with his hobby herd, he did not react too well to the pictures my dad took on that school trip to Catalina… I wouldn’t go anywhere near calling them “deficient”, but “inbred” is sadly accurate, I’m sorry to say. I’m surprised to hear they’re still even there in 2020.
1. Inbred is not a bad word, it's an accurat description when related animals breed. It's well documented that inbreeding is bad for the genes 2. The bisons don't care that Wikipedia calls them inbred, so no need to be offended on their behalf

I guess the original herd was lacking in distinctive generic material, so that the years of inbreeding did not result in a unique species. That's sad. People do things but they don't have an understanding of all of the ramifications of what they are doing.
