Hiking Scafell Pike via the Eskdale Valley, Lake District

Спорт

Hello everyone! Last week we headed up to the Lakes for the day to go for our first big walk in the fells since lockdown. We were met with some fairly difficult navigating conditions but really dramatic landscapes, and were out in the hills for 9 hours in total that day!
If you're thinking of doing this hike, I'd really recommend having good compass skills as the tracks are vague and conditions can be difficult. I would also describe it as a challenging hike due to the steepness of the terrain. All in all, we had a brilliant day out and I'm looking forward to getting back to the Lakes soon.

I do like the honestly and simplicity of this...no huge macho feats of daring, just a lovely walk in the hills. So many people wouldn't have admitted to becoming disorientated on the top, but it's SO easy to do, even with a map and compass when it's a near white-out. Good for you. Beautifully shot and a lovely soundtrack too...

Did scafell pike in 1975 when I was 19 out of Brathay hall outward bound centre! Remember the scree then, pretty daunting for a townie as was then. I remember we had an RAF officer with us looking at routes for recruits! Thanks again Athema makes me feel 19 again ;0)

I am so envious! Here in the southeast US it is 95 farenheit (34 celcius) and all I want to do is stay inside where it is cool. I miss walking so much here in the summertime but with the heat and the bugs it just isn't enjoyable. I manage a walk in the neighborhood each evening when the sun and the temperature aren't quite as brutal but it just isn't the same. Your hike was my favorite kind - cool and somewhat damp. People here think I'm crazy for enjoying rainy hikes but like you said it keeps the bugs and the people away! Following your hillwalk was like a cool breeze - thank you for the vicarious English getaway and brief escape from the Memphis heat!

Watching this while warming up after a very wet peak district walk...what a perfect afternoon! We did exactly the same in thick cloud at the top of Scafell Pike, finally got the right direction then went wrong again turning right too early and ended up going up the scree, sliding back down and ending up back on the tourist side of Scafell Pike...idiots! We can't wait to do the Eskdale side properly!

Just discovered your videos - really inspiring stuff and some lovely music too. I know you and your partner weren’t “in danger” up there but this video does highlight a very serious point. Even for the experienced, bad visibility can be very disorienting and it’s an essential skill to be able to take a bearing and navigate using an old school map and compass. A lot of people get lost by relying on phones or just blindly following paths without thinking. Keep up the great work, I’ll be buying a copy of your book!

What a lovely walk, I did an almost similar route a couple of weeks ago. The start was the exact same as your route. How clear was that water at that bridge... Beautiful. The difference was I scrambled up Pen and then up to Scafell Pike then went up Sca Fell via Lords Rake. Eskdale is such a lovely place, I'm thinking of heading back out in November for a wild camp at Sampson's Stones and exploring more of the area. Beautiful video by the way, really enjoyed watching it ❤️ Jodie.

Love your production for this walk and admire that you navigate the traditional way, we do take a map but also use the GPS on the OS app. Last Thursday we did Scafell via Lord’s Rake, Scafell Pike & Great End returning via Sty Head, exhilarating scenery and views. On Friday we hiked up the other end of the massif to Slight Side from Wha House Farm returning via the track down off Long Green (very steep) into the magnificent Eskdale valley, quite a few wild swimmers out. There is a pretty foot bridge by Taw House should you need to cross upstream from the car park. Strenuous two days for us OAP’s, still creaking today!

That walk brings back a few memories! It was my first attempt on Scafell Pike. Too late in the year and with only a couple of hours daylight left by Little Narrowcove my brother and I called it a day and left it for another time. Second attempt was from Langdale one very early Easter, beaten back by a snowstorm with zero visibility at Angle Tarn. Third attempt and success was from Borrowdale. A large organised group on the top were convinced they were on Great Gable, which caused not so muffled hilarity among the very many other walkers in the vicinity. Six would-be leaders means six times the likelihood of losing your way! Eskdale looks like a really nice approach which does not seem to attract many walkers, looking at the narrow path and general lack of erosion! I guess you must have done this fairly recently as I saw you looking at some pinks by the stream.
