Hiking Santa Ana Volcano | Volcán Ilamatepec | El Salvador Travel | Indian Couple in Latin America
We hiked the highest volcano of El Salvador, Santa Ana Volcano or Volcan Ilamatepec. The active volcano is 2,381 m. high and last erupted in 2005.
We traveled by public transport to reach the volcano trailhead from our hostel in Santa Ana town. A guide is mandatory for the hike, and we found ours near the trailhead. He helped us with the route, requirements, and tickets. It's a 4-5 hours hike and you get to spend 30 minutes at the summit.
The hike is moderately difficult with the first half mostly in shade and the second half, on rocky terrain in the sun. However, it is cold and windy at the volcano summit.
We were lucky to watch the beautiful emerald lake in the crater of the Santa Ana Volcano. The clouds floated around the crater but did not disrupt our views.
