Despite being a no-longer-young guy with back and knee issues, I’ve nonetheless managed to day-hike most of the 50 state summits (and many others). But I’ve been putting off Gannett Peak, primarily due to its length. Not sure I can handle 50+ miles in a day. This might actually make that feasible. Would greatly value an honest review by an expert like yourself.

I can't imagine that something so small would have enough power to make a difference. There may be a psychological boost though, if you believe it's helping.

Skiers have been using similar mechanical assist devices for years. Of course that's because many skiers (me included) have ruptured one or both ACLs at some point, and they want to keep skiing. ⛷

I vote yes on the mechanical legs. This will be the only place anyone will really know their worth and best use case. It is what it is.

I usually see no more than a couple of rattlesnakes per year, but already this year I've had 4 encounters (3 seen, 1 heard).

I gotta say as an outdoors person I'd be delighted to be transferred from DC to Grand Junction. The fact so many didn't want to go makes one wonder.

They ended up keeping a west office out there and then having HQ in DC where they could probably do face to face. Sounds like a good solution.

@@njerseydavid that is exactly my point- these aren't outdoor people, they are career buerocrats. I'd rather the BLM be staffed with outdoors types.

I hope that the national parks lose the lawsuit in a massive way!!!! refusing cash (which is a federally accepted legal tender) is 100% UNACCEPTABLE.

Agree, but you have to admit it's pretty crazy that it cost $40k to deal with cash at Death Valley and they only took in $22k in cash. Seems like it could be easy to solved with a machine that accepts cash or something. There's got to be a clever solution here, I'm sure other businesses have figured this out.

Thanks for the news! Cashless entry is a practice restrictive of people's freedom of choices. Reportedly millions of Americans don't have bank accounts so it's unthinkable that this many Americans could potentially be turned away from national parks because they can't pay in a cashless way. Some blog writers argue for free entry. That point might have been valid before 1950. Now national parks get 14 million visitors from other countries every year. It would be difficult and costly for parks to differentiate between foreign and domestic visitors.

Well, I think it could be free for everyone, just like our roads and infrastructure is free to visitors. Or even do what some museums do and have a "suggested donation" for entry but allow free entry if you choose not to. I think there's probably a good solution here from some smart folks. The idea that people are told to leave because they want to pay cash seems insane to me.

@@Hikingguy Thanks for your response :) I don't have any statistics but it seems that a lot of countries don't have the culture of tipping or donating so a box of "suggested donation" might get donations from mostly Americans. National parks are funded by American taxpayers so it seems reasonable to infer that the privilege of free entrance should only be applied to Americans or taxpaying residents in us.

Prepaid debit cards are the answer here. Walmart offers a pre-paid debit card, for example. Yes, there's usually a fee for the convenience of this service, but it's probably the best way for people without bank accounts to deal with cashless requirements. I'd rather that the National Parks save the fees they have to pay to handle cash.

Great update video, Cris! OC Parks also just opened the new Red Rock Wildnerness with over 8 miles of new hiking trails.

Thanks for the update, Chris! I really enjoy these. The rattlers are definitely out here in Northern Utah. I've run into two Great Basin Rattlesnakes in the last couple of weeks. One of them put on quite a show for us too. Being honest about gear is the only way to be. You're providing necessary information so people can make critical decisions on what gear they can rely on to take in the back country. That's to bad about REI dropping rentals. I ran the rental shop in the SLC store in the late 90's and we sold a ton of gear to people that had rented from us. It's a great way to try out gear before you buy and it's a perfect vehicle for people that might want to try out hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, etc., without having to buy expensive gear that they might not ever use again.

Great point, @aboutthejourney! When I was getting into scuba, I rented from Sport Chalet. Slowly I'd buy my own equipment, also from them, first a regulator, then wetsuit, and so on. So even if Sport Chalet might have lost money on the rental, those rentals made a lot of big dollar sales for them.

I appreciate that and thanks for the insight on REI. Plan is to stay independent, hopefully the channel can grow to the point where I can live off this.

Thank you for talking about loss of REI rentals being a blow to the accessibility of the outdoors.

FYI … In the phoenix area we have the Maricopa Trail. I hav only hiked a small part of it but it circumscribes much of the Phoenix metro area.

Correction on Mt. Charleston, the South loop and Trail Canyom access to the peak are closed, and will remain closed for the year according to rangers due to damage from Hillary storm.

nice vid thanks fyi - the Mt Charleston area has access problems from last year's hurricane and flooding. Some trails, and parking lots are not expected to be open this year.

You covered tons of news items on this one. I won the High Sierra Loop lottery twice, and both times the park cancelled the permits since the camps were closed due to snow. Since then I've moved on to other things, but might try again in 2025.

National monument expansion is worse for conservation. National Forest is very very rarely approved to be sold off or developed. Turning it into a national monument means building roads, paving roads, building bathrooms, parking lots, etc etc. It would have been better to designate it "Wilderness" instead, but politicians only care about the money tourism brings in

What's the deal with biking the Rincon to Redbox trail? When looking it up I only find OHV type info. Are permits required? I know that area burned in the Bobcat fire in 2020 but I'd think by now that trail would be pretty nice for a long day. I did it from Monrovia Park in 2018 and would love to go again. I never had a permit, I just rode up a trail.
