The weather was starting to change and we were beginning our migration south but we wanted to squeeze in one more solid Colorado hike. And of course, it might as well be a 14er! So we found a beautiful camp spot and set our sights on hiking to the summit of Mt. Shavano.
Mt. Shavano stands at 14,229 feet. And one cool thing about hiking up Mt. Shavano is that if you're up for it, you can lengthen the hike and add on Tabaguache Peak as well. Tabaguache Peak stands at 14,162 feet so it is also quite impressive. By the time we reached the summit, we weren't feeling up for the additional peak. But in hindsight, I do kinda wish we would have pushed on... we were that close!
Hiking to the top of Mt. Shavano was pretty tough, there's about 4,455 feet of elevation gain. And it was chilly! But so worth it. Once above the tree line, the views were incredible. And as you can imagine, the trail consisted of up, up and more up. Then finally, we were on top! We took in the amazing panoramic views, ate our well deserved lunch and headed back down to camp.
