Hiking and Wild Camping in the Wicklow Mountains

The hike started from The Glenmalure Lodge and brought me on a 25km loop with great mountain views. The first leg was a 2km road walk towards the bridge over the Avonbeg River to access the Glenmlaure Zig Zags. Onwards from here, the first mountain peak reached was Cloghernagh. I continued in the direction of Lugnaquilla but with my late start I decided to veer left and head towards the ridge of Corrigasleggaun and Carrawaystick. These mountains form a backdrop to Kelly's Lough where I camped 2 months ago. I spent a lovely peaceful night in the tent and the sunrise was beautiful again. The next morning I made an early start in the direction of Craoghanmoira and Fananierin mountains. An early morning hike following a wild camp and with reduced water weight is always a highlight! I met a few early morning trail runners but mostly a very quiet route to take.

    Thanks so much Lesley for your lovely comment, so nice to receive it! I think there’s quite a lot of good quality content from Irish people, but there’s definitely different styles which possibly appeal to some and not others. I find it all a bit weird posting videos like this. I’ve never done anything art-y/creative in my life and as soon as I put stuff on KZread it has opened the doors to a vulnerability in doing it but also the lovely encouragement that comes with comments like yours!! It helps and I think - just keep going it’s ok!! Cheers 😉

I’ve started using non copyright music for the last few months in fear of having my little videos removed. I’m using an App called Epidemic Sound which ensures I don’t have any copyright infringements. I scout the music on that app trying to find music that moves me and that I might be able to use at some stage - it’s a smaller pool I end up swimming in to locate music but great when I find something that I like 👍

    Greetings. Just to echo some of the previous comments; it's fantastic to see some quality hiking & camping videos from Ireland. They give some great inspiration and I especially like the screenshot from the OSI maps towards the end - it gives a very good idea of your route. Indeed, your Kelly's Lough video was the basis for my own loop walk there a few weeks ago. One small suggestion/request - if you can, can you please place a marker on the OSI screenshot to give an idea of your camp locations, which I know you already feature/show in the video itself, but it'd be nice to see a graphic of the route including camp locations. Just a thought. Regards and keep them coming, Wadirunner.

    Another lovely video Miriam..such beautiful scenery..Though I enjoyed the music, I would much prefer to hear your mellifluous voice, narrating instead..I love the Irish accent generally..takes me back to the holidays I had in Donegal and Dingle..but your voice is so gentle and calming; that I cant understand why you dont utilize it more..Hope this doesnt come across as a criticism, because it most certainly isnt meant that way..But I bet your English viewers (&others outside of Ireland) would agree with me..Your countrymen would probably say.."wud u shut up &put sum mor of that grand music on!" Haha..I'm only teasing 😊

  • @MiriamKennedy

    @MiriamKennedy

    2 жыл бұрын

    Mellifluous - I had to look up the meaning!! 😎 I was posting videos for about a year Tim and I never spoke. I made the videos for myself to remind me of the feeling I'd get on my trips so speaking was something I never thought I'd do. I also felt I'd nothing to say and had been a total neurotic camera shy person my whole life. A few people encouraged me but I still thought I'd never do it and then I wondered how much of it was fear that was stopping me....I then became motivated to take a risk and just do it (the Djouce video is the first time I spoke - I felt like a total idiot!)...it was a huge deal for me and it still is! I'm definitely more on the introvert side of the scale so making videos and posting them and then speaking has pushed a lot of buttons for me. Its not that I'm completely unconfident, its just not my nature to be so 'look at me'...before I spoke on videos some people had started to watch the videos I was posting and then I realised I felt part of this community of other people that were creating and others that were watching and enjoying this kind of stuff. When I realised this it became a little easier - I was now talking to friends if I chose to speak! Its been a fun and challenging journey to date - I get some great positive experiences through the video making and posting but I also lose something of the specialness of the alone time. I counterbalance that by making sure I do plenty of camps with no camera and only bringing the camera gear when I feel moved to. Even now I think what's next with this...what do I truly to do with this...I've no interest in chasing money with it and I recently 'qualified' to make money with ads but decided not to do it. I don't want to be sucked into the rabbit hole of trying to get something financial from this pleasure in my life even if its pittance! I've never felt any sort of a creative expression in my life before now and I've just stumbled into this but its a nice way to spend time I suppose....its just entertainment and keeps me stimulated in someway! 😉 But....its been nice to challenge myself and push myself out my comfort zones and take a few risks. I would imagine that most of my friends in 'normal life' are horrified by the videos, or mostly its just not their thing...but its nice that there are some people who share in the passion of being in the magical world of having a tent on your back, drinking tea and dunking biscuits while watching the sunset and going to the toilet outdoors!! Simple pleasures!! So...talking or no talking, who knows what's next!! Thanks for tuning in anyway, its nice to connect with fellow wanderers 😊

  • @timporter8886

    @timporter8886

    I watched the video when you first spoke and you can tell that you feel awkward, but seriously your speaking voice is lovely..so rich and calming..You're well spoken and listening to you doesnt seem like you're talking to a camera, it feels more intimate than that; as though you're speaking with an accompanying friend..You're a natural and I cant believe it took you so long to discover that..Im sure your 'normal life's friends aren't at all horrified by your vidios at all..Well maybe..No, I'm only joking..Perhaps you should put your skills to good use and start reading audio books..I remember reading (many years ago) Dervla Murphy's wonderful book "Full Tilt"..but hearing your voice for the first time, I thought..hmmm..I'd love to hear you read that..Hope that doesnt sound weird..haha..Just had a thought..Hey, there's an Idea for you Miriam..perhaps you could do a modern retracing of Dervla's journey..but on your Brompton!?!? Ireland to India..Next year will be 60th anniversary of her journey..Anyway, sorry..wandered off subject for a moment..I do hope that you continue to make these mini-epics of yours (with narration please..haha) But I understand what you say about the vidios sometimes intruding on your alone time and "forcing" you into doing plenty of camps with no camera..haha..I like the idea of that..I also like the fact that you're not intimidated by fear (I had similar thing with horses in Donegal, but that's another story)..and that you've pushed yourself to do things that you weren't comfortable with..So as for your next project..well there'll be no stopping you, whatever you do! 🚴‍♀️

I’ll be 50 next Summer and what a treat to take time to cycle to India to do something special to mark that milestone 😎 I read another book last Summer of a woman that cycled the entire Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland to mark her 60th and it got me thinking what I could do for my 50th. When I choose to filter water on my trips I use a Katadyn - Be Free 1L filter which has been working fine for me. I will generally have sussed out from a map if there will be likely water sources where I’m going (assuming I definitely have a plan where I’m going!). @@MiriamKennedy which drone do uou use? The little egg holder is fair handy. Your video is class, I will 100% watch them all when I have the time to sit down and watch them un interrupted. You will do very well with them. Lovely and calm to watch. I loved it. I hope you find a tent to replace the Lanshan if I see any reviewed I'll let you know

    @@RamblingOn I’m using a Mavic Mini - nice and light to carry when camping which was the main deciding factor for me and the output is great for their size also! Delighted you liked the video, thanks for watching it! I put the Lanshan Pro 1 up on adverts today and already some interest 😉

    @@RamblingOn I’ve already lost one and I’m on my second 🤦‍♀️ The Mavic Mini 2 is meant to have a better controller than the first 1 which I have - I don’t know whether I lost mine through my own error or due to the controller but I’ve had no such problems with the drone I have now. You eventually get a bit more comfortable with them and find your way, they’re great fun and definitely up the quality of the footage for me! There’s no end to the spending we can do on our interest as you well know 🤭

    Hi Eliezer - that’s lovely to hear that you enjoy these adventures 😊 I use paper maps and I also use an App on my phone ‘Outdooractive’, I have all the ordinance survey maps for Ireland on this app. It helps show me exactly where I am and I use it to plan and plot routes and also use other peoples routes that are available. It definitely opened up so more of the country to me when I started using this App! Thanks for your message 👍

    Cheers!! Stayed up far too late last night editing the footage. I was tired after a big hike and camp and thought I’d get all the footage into the laptop and do the editing today..couldn’t stop myself! 3am I finally stopped shredding the content 🤭 Glad you liked the music! I tend to know in advance what music I’d like to use when I’ve a plan to use the camera. For your elaborate cooking you’d definitely need that bigger pan. I’ve to do my rasher and egg separately - the burdens!! 😊

    @@Sagewitchevensong Ah that’s great to hear and thanks very much for the encouragement! I’ve been going through a ‘what am I doing this for’ phase! I’d been enjoying it all along and then after the last video I thought I’d never make another one 🤦‍♀️ I still find it a bit weird - trying to find my way with it I suppose. A bit of a love/hate thing with it all!!

    @@MiriamKennedy yes it can be a fine balance that phase , and when you feel that you have to make a vlogg every time you’re out that’s when it becomes hateful . I’m just back this morning from a great wild camp and I didn’t even take a photo , no cameras , no GoPros , just the phone which stayed in my pocket . That camp was fir me only not KZread. That’s the balance I need to be able to vlogg.😁👌🏻

    @@Sagewitchevensong Yeah same as that - I’ve done a few trips since my last one without the camera. My first love is venturing out alone in the tent - capturing it by video is a secondary interest. I paid a price on the Inishturk video where my focus was on the video making at a level that meant I lost something very dear to me. I agree - it’s fun and a pleasure every now and again to make a video and balance is needed for these two complimentary yet competing interests. Hope you had a good trip 😉 Thanks for letting me vent!

    Are tracks well marked in Ireland? Great video ❤

    Hi - to be honest routes in the mountains are not well marked at all. Certain routes on lower ground have decent route markings though. A lot of the mountains have well worn tracks so if you can navigate or have a navigation app on your phone you can get around fairly easily. Hope that helps and thanks very much for telling me you enjoyed the video!! 😊
