Devin Ashby and I head into the Escalante area of Utah to explore a series of canyons, sand dunes, slick rock, and the legendary Cosmic Ashtray, truly one of the oddest scenes in Utah. It's late winter and it's still mighty cold. Devin and I enjoy a classic buddy buddy beatdown adventure.

    I backpacked this area in the mid '90s as a teen. I remember my friend's dad telling me that my machete wouldn't be needed in the desert and was just extra weight. Guess who got to lead the way because they had a machete! 😂

    One of the things I appreciate about your adventures (and there are many) is your experience and ability to vocalize the nuances of each trip and terrain. For example, highlighting not all miles are equal. Every video holds nuggets of truth way more valuable than just gear reviews. You have a very balanced approach. Keep up the great work!

    So beautiful! Great video guys!! Eric, love your gear, but please don't bring a compression sack for your quilt, just stuff the quilt at the bottom of the pack and everything above it will compress it anyway. That compression sack must weigh quite a bit, for that weight difference you could switch to the X-Mid pro 2 person tent lol

  • @eric_hanson

    @eric_hanson

    3 ай бұрын

    The compression sack also serves as a waterproof bag. With all the water we hiked through and the cold weather I gotta make sure I have a dry sleeping bag at the end of the day.

  • @michelstronguin6974

    @michelstronguin6974

    3 ай бұрын

    @@eric_hansonI always use a Nylofume bag inside my backpack to make sure the things that need to be dry stay dry. That also includes clothes for camp, battery pack and so on... I start by packing my sleeping bag at the bottom of that Nylofume bag, and everything else that needs to be dry I put on top of it so that the weight of the stuff creates a compression effect on quilt. Than I close that bag, and I place all the other stuff on top. This not only saves the weight of the dedicated compression sack, but also there is a good video on KZread that shows that a compression sack creates a large hard shape inside your bag, and everything that results from that.

    Wait a minute - you chose the weight of a chair over the weight of an extra pair of socks and a few Hot Hands

    I brought extra socks. I contemplated using another pair for the second day but i wanted to have more dry socks available.

    I'm pretty sure it's from Govee. They make a bunch of versions but not sure which one that is.

ULTRA LITE.... filter !! i have a lite hand size " pump " style filter that is years old , still going and WAY faster to collect water and do field clean or repair. but i get the draw...or... lure off ULTRA LITE.. UL isnt "all" that its cut out to b !!!! any one that carries a chair isnt a gram counter ... good 4 you amigos.😅😊. i love the Escalante region it's very uneek !!! i'm so jealous of ur trip.... being to long since ive been that way. some areas r gorge BUT most often u must carry ur water all the way till u get to certain hidden gems that has water. oh yes canyon life in the desert 😅 !!!

    Maybe next time boil some water. Stick your frozen socks in your frozen shoes. Pour the water in. Let everything defrost you'll start out with warm feet. Just a thought.

    Mixed feelings on these types of videos, I remember when places like this were so unknown I could hike for a week and not see another soul, now if I go to so many of these places I spend half the time picking up garbage other people left. I want everyone to experience awesome places, but social media crowds make me sad 🤷‍♂ Beautiful video and scenery though for sure.
