Hiking 23 Miles in One Day with my Camera

In this video I escape by hiking the Ullswater Way with my photography gear. The hike was 23.75 miles long and took in some amazing scenery. I stayed in my camper van the night before so I was ready to hit the trail at first light. Unfortunately I did not do any photography and the reasons for this are explained in the video. Enjoy.

I think the advice at the end is subjective. You would take no images, some would take a couple, and others (myself included) could take hundreds! That's the beauty of photography, everyone has their own philosophy and none of it is wrong. That's why I love watching your videos alongside other photographers, never boring.

Brilliant wisdom Tom. I have long since realised that taking your camera kit on trips like these "just in case" rarely returns keepers but to hear it from the likes of your good self is important. I keep an X-T2 and 16-55 f2.8 as a "just in case" kit but mostly don't take it out of the bag when out on hikes or motorcycle trips. Hopefully we can return to some kind of normality before long and you can get back to posting the type of video that we all started to follow you for. Meantime stay safe and do what you can.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. I agree that a hiking goal rarely aligns to a great photo session, except for the lucky snaps along the way. That said, this was a most enjoyable videographer session, with some epic video “images” from both the camera and the drone. A great photo can tell a story, but never in the same way you did with this. I’m going to go pack some things for Saturday outdoors.

Thanks, Tom, what a nice hike you took! No matter there were no good photo ops, the hike and scouting locations were the focal point. I agree with you that you it's difficult to combine a hike with a photo shoot. I think it has to be one or the other. My wife has sometimes said, "Let's go for a walk and you can take some photos." It just doesn't work that way. Anyway, I hope you and Charlotte are okay, the new rules in the UK are a little difficult to follow, but I imagine you are now working from home, as so many are. Scary. Stay safe and well, my friend. Bob

Never heard of the Ullswater Way, so thanks for alerting me to that. My days of 20 miles in a day are long gone, but it may be a useful thing for bite-sized chunks. 100% agree about the mix of long walks and photography, must of the day is spent in 'bad' light and the chances of being in the right place at the right time are slim. Great scouting though. Thanks for sharing and please stay safe and healthy!

I couldn't agree more, long hiking doesn't make for great photography, I had this experience hiking in New Zealand and the need to cover ground limits the the possibility to find good comps at the right time. Sure you see amazing things, but almost never at sunrise / sunset or at great lighting conditions. To avoid disappointments it's better to focus on either trying for great pics or enjoying the hike! :)

I agree with the idea that it's difficult to do photography on longer hikes, especially ones that you're trying to complete in a single day. You focus in on cranking the miles out to get to your destination which prevents you from seeing what's around you. I will say i think you missed a comp at 19:15. I see great cloud filled sky, a great subject (tree in silhouette) and good light. But then again I had fresh eyes that hadn't just hiked 20+ miles. Thanks for the video Tom...great escape for the day!
