    Another great video. Suggestion: Mail your metal wedding ring home. Replace it with a loose silicone ring if you feel compelled to wear a ring. I remember you wore some sort of ring on your last thru hike. My hands always swell when hiking. You run the risk of cutting off circulation in the finger with rings. Plus, you run the risk of the ring snagging on something and degloving the finger (ripping the skin and potentially the underlying tissues) with metal rings. My background: Retired Army Special Forces carrying heavy packs. Now I section hike after retirement until my eventual thru hike in 4 years when I will permanently retire after my second career. I've been happily married 27 years (after dating 8 weeks). My wife and I say we're married in our minds, not in our hands. Safe travels.

    Seems like quite a number of hikers don’t realize how cold can get in the Smokies even this time of the year. And also how much it rains. Can rain for a week straight. Looks like a lot of them make the wrong choice of footwear for the environment.

    A good pair of waterproof insulating socks and Microspikes can go a long way to making trail runners work in cold, wet, snowy, and steep conditions. You’ve still gotta keep moving to generate heat in your feet and have warm dry socks to change into at night.

  • @Dave_Outside

    @Dave_Outside

    Жыл бұрын

    @@andymytys maybe but I’m not gonna try it. Shoes are engineered and design for specific tasks. Running shoes are made for running, not hiking with a backpack. Also, they don’t have very good torsional stability. This is what makes your feet very tired after a long day of walking on uneven trails. I’ve seen photos of hikers with their toes all beat up. That’s because those thin shoes was offer pretty much no protection. I would at least wear shoes designed for hiking.

  • @andymytys

    @andymytys

    Жыл бұрын

    @@Dave_Outside I hade lateral support issues with the Altra Lone Peaks and because I over pronate it was a really serious issue for the longevity of both the shoes and my knees. I put in the Superfeet Trek insoles, which have a carbon fiber component in them for rigidity, which took care of all my issues. 1000s of long distance hikers use trail runners for backpacking in mountain terrain each year without issues, on the AT, PCT, CDT, and other trails. If someone’s toes are getting beat up in trail runners I’d question if their shoe size was large enough. Overall, I find a 20 mile day is easier to walk and more comfortable on my feet in trail runners than in boots. YMMV. HYOH.
