I’ve loved Utada since I was a pre-teen. Discovered her as a child with Kingdom Hearts and she became my gateway into the world of Japanese music when I stumbled across Kiss & Cry in 2007. Nice to see her finally getting her flowers (on an international level) after all these years and being on this journey with her as a fan. She’s always been so down to earth and it’s one of her greatest qualities.

I feel one could say that Utada's been writing bilingual lyrics and music since the late 90s, from the debut album, First Love, as it contained songs mixing Japanese and English. That said, if we're counting an album where there are purely English songs in addition to songs mixing Japanese and English (and some with Japanese only), then BAD Mode is definitely a first. In any case, I remember thinking, "What an amazingly cool artist, being able to mix Japanese and English so naturally when writing lyrics and sing them together so fluently." And I still have nothing but respect.

She brought such an etherealism to pop music that a lot of people struggle to or decide not to bring to a place that is still palletable for mainstream? Like she really married a Bjork-ish etherealism to a Mary J. Blige warmth and nurturing tone and made it her own bringing her own musicality to it. It's really cool to hear. I love her voice for that so much. It's so warm and bright.
