Highway 401 - Toronto, ON

In my first video outside of the United States, we follow Highway 403 from Mississauga to Highway 401 into Toronto, North America's busiest freeway.
Correction from the end card: Signs were made from screenshots, not Inkscape.

Some great footage of the 401 there. See one of the reasons why I never cover Toronto highways myself is because so many other people like yourself do a good job of it over there. Cheers :-D

This is another awesome video. Very informative. At first I was like "Busiest in N America? Really?" and then I saw 22 lanes wide. DAYUM

500k vehicles a day, it's crazy. The Katy Freeway (I-10) in Houston is wider, but not as busy. Can you imagine every person in Atlanta driving over a highway everyday? Atlanta's population is ~472k, so some would have to drive it twice!

Cool video! I like all the added information. I do driving videos on my raw footage channel but too lazy to overlay information like your videos.

Being a native of Ontario and having lived in Mississauga, I have agree that Mississauga is its own city. It is in the Regional Municipality of Peel where Toronto is in its own district. But, aside from that, my only complaint it when you posted the Highway of Heroes sign for the 401. It is not listed as that this far west. The Highway of Heroes starts in Trenton and follows the 401 to the west to the Don Valley Parkway and then south on the DVP

Maybe suburbs are defined differently in Canada than the US. Any city close to a major one, even if it’s incorporated and in a different region, is considered a suburb (here in the states). So we might be working with different definitions here. Also you’re right on the Highway of Heroes designation, there was bound to be a mistake somewhere in there :)

Amazing video. One of the reasons I want to go to Toronto is so I can ride on this chaotic freeway. I've riden on the Katy Freeway before but it doesn't feel as wide or busy as the 401 even though its the widest in the world (probably because we've only driven on it on non-peak hours and IMO the frontage roads are kind of hidden).

To be honest I think that including frontage roads in the lane total is unfair because as you said they are mostly hidden. Another thing adding to the "wide and busy" factor is the four separate carriageways. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Yeah but I guess any roads that run parallel and connects some way to the main highway counts as a lane even though it's kind of pushing it. It definitely outdoes the 401 on the interchanges though with its two 5-stack interchanges. Both have its pros and cons. Also I've noticed you have been using music from InterstateJD's videos. Excellent choice as he and Cosmophotography probably have my favorite music out of all the road channels.

There's ain't no stacks like Texas stacks! One thing I noticed about Canadian interchanges is that they are built more outward rather than stacked on top. Yes, he has some great songs that I had to steal :) The next video with Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway are both original songs.

yes you are right about the wide interchanges. Calgary is a good example of that. Another good example is the difference between the interchange currently being built in Winnipeg at The Perimeter & Lagimodiere and a very similar interchange just to the south in Fargo, North Dakota (I29 & I94 Interchange). In Winnipeg they aren't doing the same 3-level stack config, instead opting to use a flyover that goes out wider than swings back below the main deck (rather than use a 3 level stack). Both designs are free flowing though.

Mississauga is not a suburb of Toronto, it is actually a city of Mississauga. Please, be accurate. I am a Canadian living in Toronto and I know stuff here relating to this.

Despite being its own incorporated city, the city is still definitely a suburb.

Technically you're correct but for all intents and purposes it's a de facto suburb of Toronto. It grew as a bedroom community of Toronto.

Great one ! H401 is an epic Freeway. It doesn't have the very impressive stacked interchanges of TX, but it's so wide and busy that it's definitely worth the detour. How have you found the Canadian drivers compared to the US ones? Good job.

Thank you! The 401 definitely was an impressive experience, the number of lanes alone and the collector express system more than makes up for the lack of high stack interchanges. I had a much better experience with Canadian drivers, especially on the highways. I never saw anyone trying to merge going to slow, nobody really excessively sped, and there weren’t too many close lane changes.
