Highlights of the NJT 40th Anniversary Special from NY to Bay Head to Hoboken. 9/30/23

Ойын-сауық

That is fantastic excursion features the PRR painted ALP46A #4636 and the NJT disco striped ALP46A #4640 pulling us to South Amboy where the traditional engine swap once occurred until 1988. NJT recreates this here once again swapping out the ALP46A’s for the last 2 surviving F40PH-2CATS #4119 and #4120 for the rest of the trip to Bay Head, around the loop, and back to Hoboken. Aside from a couple of incidents, the trip went well and a fun time was had by all. Congratulations New Jersey Transit on a job well done. (I can’t add. 7500 x 2 is 15000😀)

You're so lucky you were able to snag a seat on this magical ride, and you deserved it for all your wonderful knowledge! I too am glad it was much better weather wise that Saturday and for the festival at Hoboken the day after! It's both mind-blowing and a bit sad that NJT has just two F40PH-2CATs left and bringing them out for the occasion is such a tribute to a workhorse.

At 56:58 you see a group of 3 pine trees (after the red dumpster). On one of them is a memorial plaque for the late Stu Wagner, Trainman. We called him the mayor of bay head. The railroad was his life, we were his family. Now he watches over our comings and goings from the yard and hopefully puts in a word for us with the big man upstairs for safe journeys.

Great memories of my commute in 1970-71.I lived with my parents in Pt. pleasant and commute to Newark. Morning train was a Pennsy, with an old New Haven lounge car that I road every day. I certainly remember the change to GG1s at South Amboy.,Evening train was a Jersey Central and ran diesel, all he way. Another sure what engines were on that. Thanks for the memories!

I've lived life long in NJ and would have loved to see real gg1 engines. Sadly, we usually only took trains into nyc, mostly for games and concerts at the garden. So, that gave no teal opportunity to see gg1 engines. We posted our tribute video of the sunday hoboken viewing of the heritage diesels. Some nice diesels but no gg1. Gary

Nice , wish I had hitched a ride on that chase. We posted a tribute video on Sunday's hoboken heritage engine viewing. I'd much prefer seeing an engine blow by than standing still as a display. Gary 15:47

That GP9 you saw does freight runs to Woodhaven lumber in Lakewood. He runs down there about 2 times a week. Southern rail division does videos on that run on youtube. The railroad is the Black river railroad. Your videos are great! thanks.

Bruce Springsteen is from Freehold. Asbury Park is the home of the Stone Poney. That's where several Jersey musicians got their starts, including Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bonjovi, and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

Once upon a time, there was Pennsylvania R.R electric commuter trains from NYC to Washington D.C. At Washington D.C. the long distance railroad trains of the Pennsylvania R.R switched from electric locomotives to steam locomotives south to Florida especially Miami.

I'm pretty sure that the main purpose of the new bridge over Raritan Bay is to replace the existing bridge after it was damaged by 'SANDY.' The new bridge is also higher, avoiding some surges.

This was such a wonderful posting. A fine tribute to what we still have in New Jersey railroading. This & your previous posting of the Sunday Hoboken festivities simply demonstrates how being a railfan unites all of us; no matter who we are and/or our heritage. Watching this was such a joy! For the record, my name is Peter. I have enjoyed your previous posts so very much. And, I thank you for sharing this post along with your friends!
