The Navy has fewer ships than it did two decades ago, but the ships it has are far more capable than those of the 1980s. Because of the collapse of its competitors, the Navy is relatively more capable of fighting and winning wars now than it was during the Reagan administration.

Wow. I think you might be the one misunderstanding the concept of GDP. GDP is a measure of production. Perhaps you are confusing it with circulation? The Federal Government is not a producer. It does not make things, it takes money from individuals and the private sector (taxes) and then uses that money to purchase things from said individuals and the private sector. It might increase the velocity of money by doing so, but not one thing is actually produced.

It needs realignment of priorities and focus. We have far more hardware than we actually need. BTW it's under President Obama's term that Navy finally stabilized its force of around 330.000 personnel.Prior to 2009 for about 7 years Navy had been reducing personnel by about 8000 per year. BTW we have naval bases all over Asia and Europe. We are present near or in all of the hot spots.

NO navy besides the United States' has more than one aircraft carrier capable of flying modern fixed wing aircraft. The United States enjoys similar dominance in surface combat vessels and submarines, operating twenty-two cruisers, fifty destroyers, fifty-five nuclear attack submarines, and ten amphibious assault ships (vessels roughly equivalent to most foreign aircraft carriers). In every category the U.S. Navy combines presumptive numerical superiority with a significant ship-to-ship advantage

He's arguing that our needs are based on strategy. We no longer need a large amount of surface ships in the world. 1916 was the era of battleship. World War II proved that carriers and submarines would be the key ships in the future. Our navy is based around carrier groups currently. The American Navy is more effective in meeting modern needs using these ships, numbers do not matter, effectiveness does. So that's why Obama was not a "buffoon" in this instance.

Well, according to the Constitution and the Supreme Court, education and healthcare are within the sovereign domain of the States, whereas military matters are an enumerated power of the Federal Government. So, yeah. The military is something the federal government is specifically supposed to spend money on, whereas education and healthcare are explicitly not.

The United States Navy currently operates eleven aircraft carriers. The oldest and least capable is faster, one third larger, and carries three times the aircraft of Admiral Kuznetsov, the largest carrier in the Russian Navy. Unlike China’s only aircraft carrier, the former Russian Varyag, American carriers have engines and are capable of self-propulsion. The only carrier in Indian service is fifty years old and a quarter the size of its American counterparts.

Well, actually, I'm a US History teacher. And I read books and newspapers. Strong sea power as a physical example of a country's dominance extended back to the Spanish and later the British. As a developing world power, TR sent battleships on a world-wide cruise to demonstrate America's ability to send a fighting force anywhere in the world. The US has bases in all corners of the world and can respond to events within hours, so Navy has shifted roles and no longer needs to meet the same needs.

Federal jobs do raise the GDP, if you don't think they do then clearly you don't understand what GDP is, it's the circle of money being spent, the more people spend it, the higher the GDP, so the more jobs in any sector and more even income distribution raise GDP. You thinking we currently have the highest unemployment rate of the history of the country is laughable, in the great depression the unemployment rate was around 25% and it's gone down by 2% to 8% since Obama entered office.

This situation is unlikely to change anytime soon. The French Navy and the Royal Navy will each expand to two aircraft carriers over the next decade. The most ambitious plans ascribed to the People’s Liberation Army Navy call for no more than three aircraft carriers by 2020, and even that strains credulity, given China’s inexperience with carrier operations and the construction of large military vessels.

Back to the Spanish? What about Rome? Or Greece? Regardless, if the Navy says they don't have the ships they need to carry out their overall mission, I am inclined to accede to their judgment on the matter. And don't underestimate the importance of naval power on a planet that is 71% ocean. The ocean is a terrible place to try and build a military base. That's why we have carrier groups. And if we can respond so quickly, why Benghazi?

Yes you are wrong. Americans believe that they are the leaders of the world because one: they have the strongest economy in the world. Two: they have the strongest military in the world. The world revolves around the US dollar, and this is evident when the HQ of the IMF and World Bank is in the US. The US really dictates the terms for most countries because of that.

  • @pup4944

It shouldn't be. Romney has absolutely no scope of America's power and importance in the world. As much as other countries hate to admit it, we need America. And you need a president that understands that. Bush involved your nation in a lot of things he didn't need to, and now Obama is left to deal with it. So world conflict resolution is incredibly important right now. America started it, so America better finish it.
