A little-known fact about a cut scene in this movie; The vigilante who got stabbed by Kurgan is reported by the doctor to have started healing unnaturally fast, which implied that he could (or had) become a new immortal. This would have made for a better angle for the sequel than the nonsense they came up with. :D

THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! The idea of the movie came from Gregory Widen, a UCLA film student on vacation in Scotland. He entered this museum of sorts, and saw a beautifully restored suit of armor and thought, "I wonder if tge guy who wore this was alive right now? What if you owned all of this and you're telling your life story?" The title of the script was Shadow Clan, then THE DARK KNIGHT, and finally Highlander. The script was a lot darker and violent than the movie itself: Connor MacLeod was born in 1408 rather than 1536. He leaves his home after learning he's immortal rather than being banished. Rather than Russell Nash, MacLeod goes under the name Richard Turpin. Ramirez is actually a Spaniard rather than an Egyptian and was born in 1100. He trains MacLeod to become a better swordsman. It takes Ramirez 6 years rather than 6 months. The Kurgan goes under the name Carl William Smith, and instead of being a savage warrior, he's a cold blooded killer. Immortals do have children, as MacLeod visits the funeral of one of his sons, while his other sons, all in their 40's-50's see him as an immortal. There is no mention of The Prize, and when an immortal is beheaded, nothing happens. Its left ambiguous on whether or not MacLeod is still immortal after defeating The Kurgan.

this actually sounds more workable for a remake, perhaps make the children of Imortals create the Watchers group, it began with their children following and chronicling they're parents journeys but after millenium they became an international orginazition that watches over all imortals when found.

Actually, I read the last, pre-shooting script and it wasn't very violent at all, being instead more like a Harlequin romance novel focused on the love story between Connor and Brenda. But it probably went through several iterations before that, and the actual shooting script is basically what we see.

Interesting facts about Highlander (1986) All of Sir Sean Connery's scenes had to be filmed in a week, due to Connery's schedule. He had a bet with director Russell Mulcahy that they would not finish in seven days, but Mulcahy won the bet. Connery earned $1 million for his week's work. (2) Sir Sean Connery and Christopher Lambert got along so well during filming that they called each other by their characters' names even when they were not filming, and it was at Lambert's insistence that Connery and his character returned for Highlander II: The Quickening (1991). (3) After filming the scene where The Kurgan confronts MacLeod in the church, Clancy Brown apologized to the Priest and nuns there for his character's dialogue, for fear that he had offended them. (4) The cast had such a good time doing the movie, they filmed additional scenes for free, detailing Macleod's relationship with his assistant. (5) Christopher Lambert had just barely learned to speak English when he took this role. The only other English-speaking movie he had been in at that point was Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes (1984), in which he spoke only a few words.

21:20 Rachel's back story wasn't in the original American theatrical release, but it was in the other countries' version and in the first VHS video release. Even without that scene, it was clear that Rachel was one of, if not the only, human confidant Connor had for decades.Even without the WW2 scene his farewell line to her: "Hey. It's a kind of magic" was very touching, but giving it that context as a callback to when they first met makes it more effective.

Great to see all the Highlander fans in the comment section 🤘 I just knew fer sure that Mrs. Movies was gonna be thrown by this one. Lol I'm glad she liked it. It's kinda touch and go with some people. I've loved this since I was 10 years old. I hung in there for all the shitty sequels (the 3rd one is half decent. It didn't take much for me to rewrite it into a great sequel) and every season of the series (which is based on his cousin Duncan). I think part of the fascination for me over the years has been learning all the secrets. The screenplay, the production notes that nobody on KZread ever talks about (check out the 10th Anniversary DVD), and the novelisation (in which they couldn't sense each other and it goes into Kurgan's backstory, he's older than Ramirez). It's all a melting pot for me when I watch it now ☺️ I'm pretty sure the becoming mortal and fertile thing at the end was something they threw in last minute. It's not in any of those other versions and even Ramirez says "man would suffer an eternity of darkness" if Kurgan won 🤷‍♂️ Also the big demon thing at the end was last minute. Originally, we would have seen Connor experiencing the lives of other people all over the world. They're basically telepathic energy sinks who are a part of nature. One in every some-odd million people were just born immortal. Sorry to go off on a rant like this, there's a lot more. Lol

Oh, and it's a masterclass in throwing things against the wall and seeing what sticks, with stunning production design and a premise that will raise serious questions about what the filmmakers were on when they made it. I rented a lot of terrible, super-cheap films in the 80's, always hoping to strike gold. I felt like Highlander delivered. It was surprising, cool, action-packed, and even though it seemed to be low-budget at the time, fully delivered in terms of visuals. The story and action scenes are probably the highlights, but the emotional content is pretty compelling given how pulpy the story is. The Queen soundtrack is incredible and can be heard on their album "A Kind of Magic". The song that always gets me is the haunting and gorgeous instrumental, piano version of "Forever". Damn if I could write anything nearly that lovely, I'd just drop dead right now :P

Greatest Soundtrack in HISTORY (Queen Album "It's a kind of magic", one of my first CD's), also the TV Show originally aired on network tv (I forget which network, but I did watch some of it back in the day) in the USA and later in syndication on other networks, but it was an international show with lots of it being filmed in France. much of the movies and tv shows are "parallel universes" as they don't fit the full established canon of the end of this movie, but no prequels, just flashbacks within the story.

Thank you. Trivia: The castle shown as the village of Glenfinnan where Conner lived at the beginning is really Eilean Donan Castle, which is on the shores of Loch Duich, and is one of those places that always appears in lists of the most beautiful places in Scotland. There was a novelisation of the Movie which added a few more details into the backstory that seem to have been cut from all versions of the movie. As for sequels, I think most fans are of the opinion that there are no sequels. Highlander 2 was butchered, it is a bad science fiction movie and the worst of the theatrically released Highlander movies. Highland 3 The Sorcerer is bearable, and it does erase Highlander 2 from canon so that's good. After Highlander 3 are the T.V. movies. Highlander (4) Endgame is again just about bearable but relies heavily on material and characters from the T.V. series. Highlander (5) The Source is just awful. The Highlander T.V. series wasn't bad and is liked by may fans. The first season is the weakest, but after that it hits its stride and could make an interesting reaction subject.

The first movie tried to close the story so sequels did not make sense plot wise. With the second movie they spent too much money on bringing Connery back and the script was a huge kludge. After that they budgets for the sequels got smaller and smaller but they at least tried to do something with the plots. The TV series was great once they got the characters and the mythos settled but they run it one season too long and run out of ideas. The spinoff series had a good premise but there are only so many plots you can do in a series like that so it run out of good story ideas even fast.

This was an excellent summary of the franchise. Although, I know I’m in the minority, but I actually enjoy the second one for the simple fact that we get to see Sean Connery play Ramirez once more. His fish out of water situations are hilarious and the banter between him and Connor is great. Everything else was shit.

I always thought Highlander was essentially vampires, plus swords and minus blood. So many of the themes are similar, and it allows for some fun philosophy and 'time travel'. 'Highlander' is just a great mythos and the TV series, though PAINFULLY 90's, had some great storylines e.g. the impact technology is making on Immortals being able to change their identity; what happens if you become Immortal as a child; what is you get trapped somewhere but not killed?

  • @jimjay1

Christopher Lambert (the Highlander) is in a few English language films (I think his other "hit" was Greystoke, a retelling of the Tarzan story which *I think* was before this) but he was/is quite big name in France and before this he had a really big hit in a Luc Besson film Subway (which I remember as Metro, so that might have been the French title). I get the impression he is a proper actor, if you know what I mean, but when he got his break in English language movies he seemed to go for big movies rather than, you know, character driven stuff or whatever hoping to make it big, but it didn't really happen for him - the Highlander sequels are all dross for instance (please, please, please do not watch them, you will not like them). He's been in Oscar nominated foreign films several times (most recently in 2018) so he's still a big name abroad - he just never really quite made it in Holywood.

I paused about 21 seconds in for one reason. Highlander: One who is from the Scottish Highlands Immortal: One of a race of beings who cannot die unless their heads are taken and with it, their powers Connor is a Highlander and has always been a Highlander but it wasn't until after he was "killed" in battle that he was resurrected an Immortal. Juan Sanchez Villa Lobos Ramirez was born under the name Tak-Ne in Egypt, hence why he said he was actually Egyptian. Ramirez was not a Highlander. He was an Immortal. Kurgan was Russian but still an Immortal. Just something I have to clear up because I keep hearing people refer to Immortals as Highlanders and I wanna respond with "Where is that character from? Don't worry, I'll wait." Oh and that opening monologue from Sean Connery. He literally phoned it in...from his bathroom. That's why there's an echo. The only thing about the movie that irritated me was the way Kurgan killed Connor at the first of the movie. I mean who opens themselves up like that when you have a sword and a shield to protect yourself?

That opening monologue was recorded by Sean Connery in his bathroom. 😁 He had very limited time to film this movie, and he bet the director he wouldn't be able to finish all of his scenes. He lost that bet. Russell Mulcahy was known primarily for directing music videos before he went into features. The opening shot over the wrestling ring required a custom computer controlled camera rig to get. The sweeping shots during the final battle were achieved by strapping the camera to an office chair and pushing it across the room. There are several sequels to this, but I'd avoid them for the most part. The third movie isn't too bad, but it's basically this one again, slightly tweaked. That's the best it's going to get though. There was a TV series which was pretty damn good, though doesn't really fit with any continuity. And there was a pretty bad spinoff, and an awful cartoon, as well as a Highlander anime that I haven't seen. It's a big franchise, but in the end, it seems there can be only one.
