I have never heard an organ try and copy or emulate the bag pipes. Very well done Paul. This tune as you probably know was written by two German composers as far as I know for the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards who, along with many Scottish Regiments, were stationed at the time in West Berlin. My own nephew was stationed there with the Royal Highland Fusiliers for a time, andI even managed a visit with him to East Berlin, including the Cathedral a real eye opener.

There's another recording of this piece played on the organ of the Cologne Cathedral, it reminds me of it. This piece for organ also being the hymn of Cologne, it brings tears into my eyes watching it 2000 kilometers away from my old home town. Absolutely beautiful.
Wow! Simply wow!
Dear Paul. This is by far the best organ rendition of HC that I have found anywhere on the internet. Thank you Maestro. I'm going to learn to play it on our Allen organ at church. Our head church elder and good friend is Scottish and HC is his favorite tune. I bet that I can bring tears of joy and pride to his eyes.

Perfect performance! AND Perfect tempo ~ when used as a Wedding processional (since apparently weddings no longer take place in a church) it is grand and appropriate at this tempo. Take your time and let's not make it a race to the altar! (Most American Religious buildings that are new are extremely short distances to the altar from the back).

@PaulFey
2 жыл бұрын
Yes - there is an arrangement on Amazing Grace in the same style here on my channel 😀 You would like to get this arrangement on Highland Cathedral? Sadly I can’t transcribe this because of the copyright on the tune 😊
that is a reed isn’t it? Amazing how the combination really does make a very realistic bag pipe sound. My family is originally from Scotland, though I’ve never been able to visit; but always thrilled by this sound; thanks.
Very nice piece, I always wanted to play this, do you also have the score or is this an improvisation.
@PaulFey

It is wonderful! Thank you for asking - the tune is still under copyright so I can't write it down BUT I'll release a similar arrangement on Amazing Grace this Sunday - this will have the score included :)

Paul, so what is your back ground?> You seem so relaxed at the organ. do you play Bach also?

Thank you so much for watching, Dale! I‘m studying organ music/church music here in Germany 😀 I‘ve got some Bach recordings on this channel as well - I‘d highly recommend the BWV 532 recording 😊
Dear Paul, since I am an elderly amateur student organist, and I'm not very good at sight-reading music, it would help immensely if you had an overhead camera showing your fingering. How much would it cost you for and overhead cam? It wouldn't need to be high resolution. I would be glad to contribute what little that I am able.
@PaulFey

Hey Matt, thank you so much for the offer! The camera should be no problem, the problem is the mounting of it - but I‘ll see what I can do 😊
Very bagpipey!

Yes Sir!
Nochmals herrlich, Paul! If there's not too much involved with obtaining permissions from or providing royalties to the original Dudelsack composers, publishing your glorious arrangement would make you overnight able to purchase the very Marcussen instrument with whose samples you've recorded it. . .and able to reserve seats for both yourself and a friend on both Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson's and Jeff Bezos' next flights into space!

I would certainly like to buy a copy of your arrangement Paul, registration included. Sublime arrangement, registration and performance! Congratulations 👍🏻😃
Hi Paul; amazing. You nailed it. Firstly the tempo. Not a wedding - a slow, slow march. Military stuff. It's the 'pipes. What is absolutely unique in your arrangement is the ( excuse the technical) acciaccaturas on the main melody line. That gives the full emulation of the pipes - I think? Do you write the ornament in your score? And I hope you indicate your tempo. Vital. Love the way you build to full organ towards the end with pedals leading. I've looked for other organists. None uses the ornament (even Winfried Bonig...) and most if not all miss the slow tempo. So this is truly you. ..oh and you love it. I can always tell from body language. Great stuff. btw - what stops are you using for the melody line ?
@PaulFey
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so so much! I just made the ornaments up on the go, but this really gives it this "sturdy" feeling of a bagpipe in my opinion. I'm not entirely sure anymore but I've used the 8'+4' reeds of the Swell and Positiv + Tremulant for each and one of the high pressure reeds in the Solo to give it some spice!
@jtrevm
3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulFey I smiled with your phrase 'made up on the go'; a composer at work here. Thinking later last night I was sure that on your score you should insist on the tempo at slow march and write in the ornaments. It's your arrangement - not a 'rendering of a tune'. A 'Fey special' if you like. So performers need to attribute to you...not just any old Highland fling....... As to the registration couldn't quite guess it - did wonder if you had chucked in an obscure quint, vox h, or mixture thing - and completely forgot about the organ's own ornament ie Tremulant.....Haven't yet seen a dudelsack (or sackpfeife?) stop...... Good stuff whatever. Do you get marked by a tutor on your compositions......? As ever, you are well on way to your academic first class hons. (with spice). T.
Where can I get a copy of that score?
