Highgate Cemetery and the catacombs tour.

Perhaps one of our more unusual historical destinations, Highgate Cemetery is a famous cemetery located in Highgate, London.
The cemetery in its original form (the older, Western part) was consecrated by the Bishop of London on 20th May 1839. It was part of an initiative to provide seven large, modern cemeteries to ring the city of London. The inner-city cemeteries, mostly the graveyards of individual churches, had long been unable to cope with the number of burials and were seen as a health hazard and an undignified way to treat the dead.
The first inhumation at Highgate Cemetery took place on the 26th May, and was of Elizabeth Jackson, a 36 year old spinster of Golden Square in Soho.
Perched on a hill above the smoke and filth of the city, Highgate Cemetery soon became a fashionable place for burials and was much admired and visited. The Victorian romantic attitude to death and its presentation led to the creation of a labyrinth of Egyptian sepulchres and a wealth of Gothic tombs and buildings. The rows of silent stone angels have born witness to pomp and ceremony as well as to some dreadful exhumations
In 1854 the eastern part of the cemetery was opened, across Swains Lane.
These avenues of death entomb poets, painters, princes and paupers. There at least 850 notable people buried at Highgate including 18 Royal Academicians, 6 Lord Mayors of London and 48 Fellows of the Royal Society. Although perhaps its most famous occupant is Karl Marx, several other people worthy of mention are also buried here
Today the cemetery’s grounds are full of mature trees, shrubbery and wildflowers that provide a haven for birds and small animals. The Egyptian Avenue and the Circle of Lebanon (topped by a huge Cedar of Lebanon) feature tombs, vaults and winding paths through the hillside. For its protection, the oldest section, with its impressive collection of Victorian mausoleums and gravestones plus elaborately carved tombs, allows admission only in tour groups. The newer section, which contains most of the angel statuary, can be toured unescorted.

Thank you, Sue! My maternal grandparents Albert and Irene Howard are buried there. They were killed in a lory accident in 1966, as was their dog Rebel. Rebel was buried at my grandfather's feet with beautiful statue likeness that was stolen sometime after my visit in 84. I'm American, mum was a warbride. My uncle who hosted me and took me to their grave has moved from London to Killileu, Ireland. Last spoke about 10 years ago.

@@SerenitySueGraveyards No way I could ever find it. Not sure if my uncle is alive, but yes, I have my memory of arranging the lovely flowers he bought from Covent Garden and like to believe they know I visited. Grandma visited once, never met my grandad. Thanks for taking me. ❤❤

I lived at 7 highgate high street in the 70s. I had come over to do my SRN training with a bunch of lovely Irish gals. I spend some time in both sides of the cemeteries .. The west side wasn't even open then .. that's another story. When I came back in the 80s my friend and i spent two days at the cemeteries ..I am from Canada. The west side had bones coming out of a coffin in one of the masoleums in the circle of lebonnon and also there was a grave that was dug up by grave robbers.. yeeeekkkk YOu could actually see into those masoleums , now they are bricked up. The Beer one was open for public to go into in the 80s.. when I creeped around there in the 70s there was 2 -3 feet of pigion shit on the Beer's table top thingys .. the roof in there is made of gold

Wow how cool, I love taking a look into mausoleums and crypts, recently I looked in to a mausoleum in Dublin and saw a huge skeleton 😨 I filmed it because I was just in awe, I do have a little bit of a morbid side, I loved Highgate and the area around it too, very beautiful homes there, thanks for sharing x x
Thank you so much for the walkabouts, it's not much (helping with gas right now!), but I'd never get to see the likes of such a beautiful, vast, HUGE. Cemetery, without you and Grave Visitations to show us around. Blessings to you both. ♥️💕💐

@@SerenitySueGraveyards I won’t either, it’s so disrespectful. People that loved them put them in a beautiful place that they thought they would be safe forever. People should be ashamed for destroying any of someone’s resting place. I do believe if you do evil things they will catch up with you. Thank you again for showing the beautiful places that many forget are there.

Hi Jacqueline basically they were not able fund it, so it became over grown, friends of highgate now take care of it, which is mostly voluntary and they are lowly trying to reclaim it, probably won't happen to every area, they are not funded by government so any money comes from donations and from people visiting ❤️

“The Pope looked up from the sketches I’d just given him,” Paul Winner tells me referring to his audience with John Paul II in 1984. “He then says, ‘But you know, Mr Winner, we do have other artists here in the Vatican. Like Leonardo and Michelangelo.’” Paul Winner, who turns 85 in a matter of weeks, lets out an infectious laugh, his bright eyes twinkling. He is speaking to me about his artistic career ahead of his latest exhibition which opened in Mayfair last week. It is a career that stretches back more than six decades and has taken him around the world.

There is an old seafarer's cemetery along highway one that is slowly disappearing .
