@@ynot6781 But even at an average height he could touch his forehead to the rim, which means his hand would be between 12-6 and 13. BTW, I don't believe that is the case. His two foot jumping ability was over 50". I haven't found anything that verified his best recorded vertical jump from a standstill, but it's unlikely that he gained an extra 10" or more by getting a running start.

Wilt Chamberlain ran a 4.6 40 at a weight of 290lbs hand timed by Hank Stram HOF Kansas City Chiefs coach. He also ran it barefoot. The 4.4 40 was from when he was in KU (college) hand timed at a weight of 240lbs. Now this is what he said he ran but, if he ran a 4.6 at 290lbs I really don't think that running a 4.4 is that much of a stretch at all.

If I jumped that high, I'd break both legs in 20 places when I landed.

Very cool video! I grew up in Pasadena and we use to play in B-Ball leagues at Robinson Park gym. I moved away from Dena in the early 80s so I am too old to remember Doug Thomas but I am still glad to see the energy is even more HYPED with those guys than it was with us. I can only remember a few guys that could "get up" as we used to say, but I don't remember anybody that could GET UP like this brother! Congratulations Doug Thomas!! Thanks for keeping Pasadena and Robinson Park on the map!!

Figuring out his vertical is easy if you know how high he can touch (presumably 13') and how high he can touch just standing (no jump). You just subtract the difference. 13 feet is 156 inches. According to the Draft Express website, the average standing (no jump) reach for a 6' 9" player, with shoes on, is 9' or 108 inches. 156 minus 108 is 48". This obviously assumes he actually touched 13 feet (I don't know how official the measurement was) and that he's 6' 9" with an average NBA players standing reach. 48" is incredible. There are very few people that can jump that high.

don't forget to subtract around half a foot because when you jump, you jump off of your toes which means your a little higher up than when your just standing flat footed. you would have to stand on your toes to see your ground reach

Dj Sarandos That's not how they measure vertical leap. Vertical leap is measured by taking your standing reach and subtracting that number from the highest point you can touch after jumping.
