Currently trying to wrangle a few people for a Session 0, and I have three settings to choose from based on their tone preferences: 1) Serious, political, high rp (12 century historical fantasy) 2) Campy, hack-n-slash melodrama (homebrew dnd monster hunter) 3) Dark fantasy but it's also complete nonsense (homebrew Barovia clone built for peak shenanigans) I would be genuinely open to ANYTHING tbh, as long as my players are into it (twink tieflings included). And yet, I cannot get these hooligans to set a date... as they say, I'm all dressed and ready with nowhere to go 😂

Your comment makes me think that this disjoint is a problem to be fixed. As long as people are having fun and they are able to be part of the world than the ragtag group of adventurers being radically different with different goals as fine

@@publiusii4246 Don't get me wrong, I'm okay with a ragtag group of adventurers, but that depends on your players. This is an approach you can do, it's a lot of fun. And you can 100% have radically different goals. Most groups I play in have at least 2 characters with a motivation or ambission that doesn't lie withing the plan the DM had in mind. There are players who just wanna do fun things in a fantasy setting. But there are also players who really are more focussed on the story writing aspect. In the end, everyone just wants to have fun. But there are many different approaches to that, and session 0 really helps with setting the tone of what everyone can expect.

And of course that "thing" turns out to be the 4th party member

I mean...The group I'm playing with was tasked with tracking down a rogue sorcerer who transformed an important NPC into a tree. They found him, got him to surrender, and after his trial he was sentenced to indentured servitude under their supervision until they decided he was reformed. The situation was a bit more complicated than that (due to wild magic) but that is actually how my character joined the party. The hilarious part is that my character wasn't intended to be the rogue sorcerer, but the description the NPC gave happened to match and the DM and I decided to run with it, since I was joining the campaign a little late.

D&D: the actual fantasy is having a group that can regularly get together for game sessions

I like the use of Nimona character for the high fantasy

Depending on the books, that's not an uncommon party. Then there's the party that has the MinMaxers working with Roleplayers, the MMs helping the RPs have the best characters they could be, and the RPs helping the MMs get into their roles, and next thing you know, the campaign turns out pretty good.

And then the house turns out to be a werehouse.

Bard, Rogue, and Paladin all in the same party, nice

Our party: 1 slutty teifling arcane trickster rogue who will hit on anything with a pulse, 1 wild hunt wolf shifter who is an ex city watchman and who is dead inside, and 1 sunshine barbarian who kills enemies by accident and then is upset about it and has to have an existential crisis by the campfire after each fight. We almost got TPK'd by an animated broom session one, then proceeded to take on a shambling mound as 3 level 2 players with only moltov cocktails at our disposal and won with minor injuries. Pissed off a spirit and almost got TPK'd again. We're playing curse of strahd for reference, and we just wrecked the evil druids without doing much and apparently we were supposed to stop a ritual but who has time for that when you can sneak in dressed like a druid and then kill the guy in charge by total chance? Tl;dr that weird staff was flammable and made things very easy.

I'm currently working on a new NPC for one of my campaigns that's a sentient piece of bread who has been at war with the Pancake (pronounced pan-ca-cay) empire. He'll be sending letters to the party for a while. With a little luck I can convince them he's a halfling or something. I've managed to pull something like this in the past and I'm hoping they forgot.

My current party: a comically angsty warlock, a perpetually confused warlock named To Be Determined because the player couldn’t think of a good name, a wizard who won’t stop committing arson who also multiclassed in warlock last level up, a sorcerer who’s player never shows up, and a fighter who is somehow the one who has come closest to actually dying

I’ve always loved the duality in one of the games I play/played of Sunny and Rat. Sunny is my character, and they started the most naive creature alive, Rat meanwhile is pretty much paranoid. They’re friends :) Sunny assumes the best and Rat assumes the worst!

My party is a tragic paladin, a happy paladin, a grandmotherly satyr, a mildly mad hermit elf, and someone so slutty they made a religion that the happy paladin has to recognize and protect due to his previous oath.

Our Party is: 3 drifters (Shadar-Kai with fey-blood, Simic-Hybrid and an black eastern dragon) who loot corpses for different reasons, Silver Eastern Dragon that wants adventure, an Elf wanting to prove herself and a drunkard water genasi with issues The Elf and Silver eastern dragon is our moral compass, also their the party mom and dad

My current party: a half elf field medic who is traumatized from the razing of his town, a kenku bard who is the adopted brother of the owlin plague doctor, a cowboy werewolf, a water genasi storm cleric, a Dragonborn monk whose player never remembers to level up, and a murder hobo shadar kai rogue.

Our party: an obnoxious harengon pickpocket, an aarakocra whos afraid of heights, 2 pacifist goblins, a sensible warlock gnome, and Dr Pepper

Our party: The standard tiefling bard who is a child, the ranger who is grossed out by bugs that works as an exterminator, and the dragonborn sorcerer who doesn't speak common.

The last party I played: a cleric who gave “momma bear” vibes, basically book Legolas with extra sass, a couple fighters, and a sorcerer who has had enough peopling today and just wants to go home and have a warm mug of tea with a good book.

My party is a schito barbarian, an artificer with hoarding issues, a fighter that has all the durability of glass, and a petty paladin.

*clears throat* In point of fact, High Fantasy refers to fantasy set in a fantastical non-Earth setting, while Low Fantasy refers to a setting which is essentially Earth, but with fantastical elements. This means that the Knight, the Mercenary and the Twink can potentially exist in all three settings. In the High Fantasy setting, they are the Hero, the Villain, and the Love Interest respectively. In the D&D setting, they are members of the party. In the Low Fantasy setting, they are playing D&D.

Oh yeah, and there’s rats in that attic. They’re regular customers, don’t worry about them.

the campaign i’m currently playing in is basically “idiot prince warlock with an archfey living in his head and his very overworked babysitter who has a rifle and a robot cat”

This one. This one got me good.

One of my current campaigns goes as such: a human rogue and his goliath barbarian friend who both fucked up in their gang and are fleeing the consequences of their actions, a warlock who had her pact when she was a 14yo edgelord and now keeps spreading chaos because her patron is (unilaterally) her bff❤, a kenku monk who lost the rights to leading the monastery by way of internal office politics and ran away - is also a former professional robber and slowly eased back into her criminal ways thanks to the warlock's immaculate influence, and a dwarven cleric blacksmith who never asked for any of this to happen and always tries to keep the group on track/not too chaotic. I'm playing the kenku btw lol both the warlock's player and I wanted to play genuinely nice characters and failed spectacularly. Now our in-game Girls Night Out are basically to break into places and steal stuff, or my kenku making sure the warlock doesn't get shitfaced on dubious alcohol/edibles from a sussy shop.
