    I've learned that the cornstarch in powdered sugar inhibits the burn rate of the fuel. If you want a more powerful fuel, use granulated sugar.

    I liked the specific ingredients and Scale for measuring. The Steel tube for the motor was scary, shrapnel hazard, the steel rod for the center hole was scary, ignition hazard, and the lack of temperature monitoring during the sugar melt was scary, ignition hazard. Excellent identification of a pathway (rather hazardous though!).

    Over the 4-5 years I made rcandy, I found that the concrete nozzle/endcap fail before the steel tube which relieves the pressure that would cause shrapnel. Steel shrapnel is not at all something to worry about unless you tried using an explosive as fuel and welded on steel endcaps. Also, the fuel is very stable. It requires a flame to ignite. I can plop some of it directly on my stove at the "High" setting, and it won't go off.

    first of all thankyou very much sir for ur quick reply ... also added that we have problem with wet mixture , after doing mixing on pan it simply remain as it is (wet as a liquid wax) , what would be suggestion for that?

    Could i make these in inch tubes with a smaller core...? would i still get a good burn rate or would it be over with in milliseconds...? bit wary of going to big in England..Good show by the way....That was an amazing easy tutorial....thank you...just one more question,....with the added extra weight, steel tubing,cement,....what type of weight would that set up lift??? thanks.

    Absolutely! Your core should be the entire length of the fuel grain, so when you say "smaller" I assume you mean a narrower core which means it would take a bit longer to increase thrust. Your nozzle diameter greatly affects the power of the motor (too big = small amount of thrust/too small = motor blows up). I would say this motor weighs about the same as the rocket itself. I understand your concerns being in a more populated area. You definitely need to be careful. Glad you like the video!     Great video thanks for sharing! I would think being the propellent is not one solid piece it would overpressure at the seams between the grains? Apparently this doesn’t seem to be a problem. Are there any other procedure not shown?

    I'm glad you like it! The fuel grains are supposed to burn from both ends and in the core. The problems I've experienced have mostly been caused by cement nozzles and end-caps that are too weak to hold up to the pressure. Someday I'll make some metal parts for more power.

    Pyrogun1839 Technically the seams between the grains would be a crack in the propellent? The nozzle and plugs couldn’t be more anchored than that I would think. I haven’t seen cement used to line a metal melting furnace. I would have expected the cement to last for the motor. Cracks like pottery heated too fast or damp in a kiln ?

    @@18141776hhhh No, they are not a crack. I think the end-cap/nozzles slip out with too much pressure because the metal surface is so smooth. Or they simply break apart due to the pressure. May be a combination of cracking/slipping. Impossible to tell without a slow-mo camera.

    @@18141776hhhh with metal end-caps and nozzles screwed into the engine body, the only thing that could fail/limit the power in an engine is the fuel. I've seen some very large rcandy fueled engines produce huge amounts of thrust without failing because they have high quality metal parts.

    It should be made known that the shrinking of the rocket “candy” makes those weird ditches in the fuel, these will result in bubbles of air in the rocket engine, and might result in explosions. To fix this, make each section a centimeter larger to allow sanding, or even cutting at least. This will lower the chance of exploding by quite a bit, but will lower the surface area of the fuel, therefore slightly less thrust. That may be fixed with better nozzles.

    Where are you saying the bubbles of air will be? Inside the rcandy grains? I would think that the settling of the fuel would fill in any air pockets, not create them.

    Pyrogun1839 not in the grains. When he says the rcandy is cooled, you will see that there is a dip in the top. Putting a flat surface of rcandy on top of that will form a “bubble”. Like a flipped over half pipe

    @@bob-hacking6027 Ok, I see what you're saying. However, those "bubbles" don't cause my rocket engines to fail. The grains burn from both ends and from the inside of the core (as seen in this animation...kzread.info/dash/bejne/hY6b2qedkc3dlKg.html ). Whether the ends are flat or have a bit of a dip in them (I've tested both ways) the performance is similar. The engine utilizing these grains worked great! And yes, better nozzles would help. However, I wanted to make these as cheap as possible so I was limited by the strength of my cement nozzles.

    tejas zagade I don't make dry fuel grains. If I did though I would use a press to compact it into grains.

    I don't know. I would definitely like to try that if I had a hydraulic press and the tooling needed. That's how fireworks are made 🤷🏼‍♂️

    @@pyrogun1839 I've seen people make it by ramming the powder with a dowel and hammer, you don't need a hydraulic press :).

    @@Shizbox I've seen that too, but I'm not sure it provides enough pressure to compress the fuel enough. I'd rather make rocket motors that way than cook the fuel if it works well.

    @@pyrogun1839 You should try it. I'm in the processes of making one but I'm not sure if it is going to work due to the fact that I'm using cornstarch water paper as a plug. Since kno3 is an absorbent it might've lost its potency because of moisture. I did put it in a sealed plastic bag tho

    +Pyrogun1839, my bates grain looks almost the same (06:39), but remains sticky for a long time. How long did it take for you to dry completely?

    It's pretty much always sticky. I'd say it takes about 15 minutes to harden completely. Temperature/humidity might affect the hardening time.

    Arka Mitra Usually I immediately put them in the rocket engine, but if I need to store them, I put them in a plastic bag and then in an ammo can.

    Pyrogun1839, I see! Packing into the rocket is the good idea 💡 now is it good to apply some oil to the coring rod before inserting? I don't have those foils and whenever I've tried with those, it got stuck poorly making the grain unusable.

    And a few more things: -- 1) Coring the grain seems a bit hazardous sometimes! What if I pour the propellant, let it dry and drill slowly as per requirement? Does it affect the grain's structure? -- 2) In this particular motor, you've used 4 bates grains each of 2.5" length with a 0.5" core, right? How much thrust can it produce approximately? And, can I apply the same configuration in my PVC motor? --- PLEASE HELP ME OUT. I HAVE ALREADY FOLLOWED YOU ON TWITTER - WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU ENTERTAIN DIRECT MESSAGE OVER THERE. :)

    Why go through all the extra work and risk fire by cooking the chemicals ? Using a nutra-bullet to pulverize the granulated sugar and potassium nitrate together as well as the clay kitty litter works great. I just started messing with these sugar rockets .I kept the tubes from used up fireworks were they already had the nozzle plug.All I did was use a mallet to compress everything, I didn't cook anything. I question how much better your results are by cooking the chemicals.After my first 3 launches I upped the ante and added 65% P.Nit., 35% Sugar, and for extra strength I added a heaping tablespoon of gun powder into the high speed blender to mix up thoroughly. I stuffed 3/4's of the engine with my normal formula and finished off with my gun powder mix. Anyway I taped a long skewer to it and lit the fuse. I didn't use iron oxide. Didn't need it. My first attempt launch was AMAZING ! These things go higher then any ESTE'S rocket I have ever seen. I tried cooking the chemicals once but it was too messy,time consuming.If I would of noticed a difference I would of continued cooking the rocket full. Safety ..Safety... Safety !

    When I cook on my burner, the rcandy cannot self-ignite. It simply doesn't get hot enough. And from my experience, cooking the fuel has always been very effective. Additionally, I'd have to make/get new tools to load rocket engines with dry fuel.

    Pabloxd123 I've heard cooking the fuel can decrease the power of the fuel, but I don't feel like it does that much. My rockets get pretty high with relatively small engines. Cooking works great for me.

    Absolutely. Is it safe? Probably not. Open flames will most likely ignite the fuel.

    Regular kno3 is granulated. Powdering the kno3 helps it burn a bit faster and can possibly affect the liquidity

    Over the years, I settled on 37/63 because I felt it provided the power I wanted and the liquidity needed to cast grains easily.

    You mean oxidiser to fuel.... Fuel is sugar and KNO3 is Oxidiser.. You always put more oxidiser

    I get my KNO3 in the form of granulated sugar. I simply powder it by grinding it in a coffee grinder. The best way to powder the KNO3 would be to use a ball mill.

    R candy is short for rocket candy. It's sugar-based fuel.

    Dont make steel cased rocket engines. Steel fragments when it ruptures and creates shrapnel. Steel is also way too heavy to make an efficient engine.

    I understand your concerns. However, steel was the only option when I was making these. I couldn't afford to buy the aluminum motor cases, and I couldn't find any aluminum tubing/pipe to purchase so I could make my own. Additionally, I used cement as a nozzle/endcap which would fail before the steel case could explode and produce shrapnel. From my testing, steel did just fine. They sent rockets plenty high for me :)

    I want to make same kind of fuel that easily flows into grain instead of scooping and pressing. What to do? I am adding little water and the mixture ends up not like yours.

    I use a 50/50 mixture of powdered/granulated potassium nitrate, granulated sugar, and iron oxide powder in the ratio 65/35/2. Don't use water (that's a different method) and as soon as the mixture has completely melted, pour it into the casting grains. Don't overcook it!

    Pyrogun1839, What's that 50/50 mixture? Sorry, I couldn't get it. Kindly explain once more. I'm almost maintaining the same ratio i.e. 65:35 and 1 gm Iron Oxide for every 100 gm batch. But what's that first 50/50 that you've mentioned in the beginning?

    pipe bomb is totally enclosed. the pipe never has and never will explode because the cement will pop out releasing the pressure. thank you for showing your lack of knowledge

    You can buy it on the internet ~$3 a pound or at hardware stores (Lowes/Home Depot) in the form of stump remover for ~$8 a pound.

    Yeah I found that out about a year ago. I've since switched to granulated sugar. The cornstarch in powdered sugar slows the burn rate quite a bit

    Is confection sugar same as powdered sugar? I don’t think it is ? None the less if it has cornstarch it effects the burn rate . So what does the iron oxides do?

    You're coring tool is a little too big for that size motor. Get a smaller one if you want better performance.

    I think it's a pretty good size actually. If I used a smaller coring tool, the motor would take a bit longer to get up to full power. Also, I need a decent size core to insert my igniters all the way inside.

    It's not a high explosive that ignites upon impact. It takes quite a bit of heat (open flame) to ignite.

    Please, don't tell people to turn the heat to high. That's how you become liable for someone burning their face off. You don't need the heat that high

    You're correct, I should say to only turn it up as high as needed to melt the rcandy. With my burner, that happens to be high. Even when the mixture has landed directly on the burner, it has never ignited. Perhaps this brand of burner just doesn't get hot enough to auto-ignite rcandy. I'll take this into consideration when making possible future videos. Thank you.
