My school has a bunch of the spiral high wattage cfls alongside the main fluorescents in the gym and I've always liked them because you don't see them in very many places.

My gym sadly is giving away the old led lights And the 2nd to last halide outdoor light died
Haven't seen as many good high-output LEDs. Been considering getting some of these high output CFLs just as collector pieces while they are still available.
418 watts on 120V takes ~3.5A, so it's perfectly normal for a 250V 3A fuse to blow. Try replacing the fuse with a 120V 5A rating.

That would be correct at unity power factor (like an incandescent lamp), but most CFL's run at a low power factor normally between 0.6-0.5 which would make it about 5.8-7.0 Amps and also they take around 1.5 times as much current at start-up!
the difference in lumen rating might be in part due to the color temperature and the spectrum the bulb puts out.

I'll take 800 lumens of warm light over 1500 lumens using the same energy as opposed to that of that cold coroner's autopsy room light anytime.

Anyone have tips on how to detect, control and prevent fires from CFL's? About 10 mins ago my 250w (blue) CFL (like the first two shown) blew out in my tent.. Luckily I was here, the place was stinking of burning plastics or something and electrical sounds were very threatening! I was envisioning the whole place going up.... Damn, pulled it out the wall and started looking into it.... Which I should have done before.
can you do a video on the oldest led BULBS
Those cfls are pretty one have phospher glow. When turn off
Great video, you are correct about handling those CFLs, have broken some when trying to remove from recessed fittings as you can only reach the lamp tube. You can upgrade the fuse with heavy guage wire and create a 'SloBlo' fuse but I guess you might compromise the original safety design.

He can stick a little wad of aluminum foil there and it'll be as good as new! ;) -- Kidding.

does the contrast between the daylight vs warm white really seem that big in real life? It seems the camera really highlighted the contrast. Thanks for making this video, that was a really nice amount of light.

Can you make a video with all the lights on without blowing the fuse

Great idea i hope he does it
Weird that the fuse blew at only 418 watts on your light bar as portable space heaters draw over 3 times that amount of current. That is 1500W We had the Eco smart 68W bulb that was in the garage that was bought from Home Depot in 2009. It died in 2015 way less than the 10,000 hours claimed. It also had a metal plate on the top of the ballast part of the holder. Maybe we got the first version of it.

Normally a 250V 3A fuse blows when the loading exceeds 750W, but it is not the case on 120V. The fuse blows when the the loading is over 360W. The final setup in the video takes about 3.5A on 120V, 1.7A on 250V, that's why the fuse decided to blow.
Are cfls made anymore?
I just picked up 3 Feit bulbs at local hardware store
Cool
Re-inventing the wheel. If it aint broke -don't fix it.
You dont have a fuse before the clip
You make video UV light
These are the least compact "compact" flourecent lamps.

Many take a split second to light up.
All of the light bulbs equal 1,500watt to their equivalent Wattage
Do the cfls all glow in the dark ? Mine seem to even when unplugged no idea why but they do 3 different kinds they all glow in the dark for no reason did u ever see this ?

You may live near high-voltage power lines in the frequencies cause the Mercury gas to get excited and light up. These frequencies do not hurt you

my bedroom has 2 75 watt cfls (daylight) that seem to gloww for abut 30 mins after hours of running (the light fixture is mostly closed off)
Hello, I would like to know, if these bulbs? Do we still make them? Compact fluorescent rather than LED? And then I would like to know, if there is no mercury at all in these lamps?
@Parrot175

These CFL bulbs do contain mercury and are difficult to find today. Most of these high output bulbs are now LED.

And in your low-energy bulbs where did you have low-energy bulbs and incandescent bulbs in B 22 ? And yes, low-energy bulbs stink. Because of mercury and magnetic fields. Is that why we replace them with LED bulbs ?
Just put a piece of solid 12 AWG copper wire in there! It'll work just fine! Lol just kidding.

Just a heads up: check you local Dollar Tree. Just came across Sunbeam LED PAR30 & 38 bulbs as well as Feit Halogen A-19's.
