High End Munich 2023 | Michael Fremer's Analog Show Coverage

Ойын-сауық

From Fremer: Day one started with a 7 AM breakfast meeting with Mark Döhmann and his team to catch up and discuss turntable news-his and what had been announced we'd see at the show. Was worth getting up early for. The only show appointments/events I had on my schedule was a panel discussion with engineering great Jim Anderson and his wife and "Tonemeister" partner Ulrike Schwarz, this time not about his work with Patricia Barber. Instead the discussion was about analog versus digital and I was there as a participant not as a moderator.
At High End, these panels are often not well attended because everyone is busy doing business, especially on press days one and two, but we had pretty much a full house and the discussion was lively, informative and a great deal of fun. i think it might have been recorded.
Though analog coverage is the main focus, among the most amazing items I saw and heard was the Alieno 250D LTD MK2-a push pull 300B tube amp (not a hybrid) with a claimed output of hundreds of watts per channel! You'll see that in the video. Enjoy!

True high end. From a price point. I prefer the brand that is affordable and delivers the tuna sandwich with the sound. Pro-Ject is the only brand I saw in this video that offers have products made in Europe that don’t cost the same as a house. To me that is the smartest company of all of them. Hope Okki Nokki can pull of the same strategy of producing in Europe, kudos to making affordable products that actually make a difference there.

The Acoustic Signature Verona NEO plinth/base looks like Microberlinia brazzavillensis, AKA, Zebrawood my favorite wood. My family were furniture makers in Switzerland, generations ago, but the skillset has been ingrained, via power tools, in all of Us. Those Polish linear tracking TT look most interesting. So many TT's its just fascinating. Really appreciate the view.

Most manufacturers obviously beleave that they have to have astronomical prices on everything in order to sell well these days. If this will keep going a stereo system will cost one million euro / dollars in 2-3 years.

An absolute racket being played in the DartZeel room at the beginning. What they hell were they thinking? Who chooses this stuff? I'd have been outta there inside 30 seconds.

So, to my understanding, anything less than $20,000 can be considered cheap, $30,000 and above is reasonable, $100,000 - Ok, let's call it expensive. Nice!

I think “High End” refers only to the pricetags, not the quality of sound. Otherwise inferior-to-digital vinyl record players would have been dropped.

The prices are not of this world, just so the sound can actually sound like they are there. Whatever rocks your boat I suppose

Yaaaaawn. Nothing new under the sun / more of the same. Honourable exceptions are the Thorens Reference with an active suspension (just like an old F1 car !), but with a middle-eastern / far-eastern commensurate price tag and the quirky OMA gear which always manages to be different...

The High end is back and even more ridiculous. Honestly, how much of this stuff do they actually sell, and at the actual quoted cost? I lost count of how many turntables weee shown here. Do they sound that different to each other? The law of diminishing intelligence is certainly at play. Vulgar in places.

Vulgar is a good choice of words. PET scans have shown the brain lights up when someone is told an item is expensive. It's a pretty simple mouse trap for dimwitted and uninsightful audiophiles.

The OMA stuff really is ordinary.. It's not bad but it's not great either??? The Thorens is incredible and reminds me of the Tech Das..

It’s the height of irony that all these channels doing axpona, Munich, et al coverage have the worst, most unintelligible audio on the internet. It’s like trying to conduct an interview and listen to detailed music in an airport. It boggles my mind that video based media are not granted their own block of time outside of regular show hours to make appointments with various exhibitors and get their footage and their interviews done in some semblance of quiet. Literally everyone involved would benefit. Until that day, watching this stuff if an exercise in frustration.

I was thinking the exact same thing as soon as the video started. Why doesn’t Michael visit select ones (maybe 5-6, the ones he is most interested in) before the show starts. He could then do the rest with the crowds.

I use a high quality Rode Bluetooth microphone system. You are correct about one thing here: it is like trying to conduct an interview and listen to detailed music in an airport. It is not the fault of the gear used or the people using it. It's the conditions under which they are being used. Your suggestion for outside show hours appointments is 100% unrealistic. No one has time for it and no one would do it. Besides, the whole point of these show reports is to report from the show. Honestly, most people understand and accept the conditions and appreciate the coverage.

@@trackingangle929 Nowhere in my comment did I impugn you or your equipment or that of anyone else who does this type of coverage. I lamented the conditions you must work under… a statement with which you seem to agree. Now, as far having (say) a three hour window perhaps at the end of the last day of the show or the morning following closing, to take appointments for “quiet” press interviews…Perhaps people will have time for it when they realize that KZread and social media are essentially a giant free commercial for them. Perhaps they might realize the economies of taking a few hours to deliver their message in a more focused and structured way when literally dozens of “media” are on hand, in front of them, and they already have their wares displayed. . Perhaps upon that small reflection they might realize it is time well spent and will benefit from it. Of course, it would take someone with some credibility and a platform to advocate such an approach. Or, that person could say nah, we’ve always done it this way, it’s too hard, and people seem happy enough. Sadly we know how well that attitude tends to work in the business world.
