High Cut Ballistic Kevlar Helmet on a Budget - TOO POOR FOR OPS-CORE? WATCH THIS!

You want a super cool high-cut operator helmet to LARP in the woods with, but your credit card company has denied you an Ops-Core purchase yet again, you had to pretend it was a fraud payment and now you need a new card. You don't have to break the bank for a legit US-made high cut helmet with Kevlar IIIA ballistic protection, turn your old school ACH/MICH into a badass high-cut helmet and have money left over for more toys.
In this video I showcase the work of two "helmet conversion" companies: KustomACH and War Dogs Tactical. Whether you just need a high-cut helmet shell or want a built "ready-to-go" option, these companies can deliver! (No they didn't pay me to say this or make this video)
We also do a little ballistic "testing" on the eardrop cut pieces from the KustomACH conversion with .45 and 5.7 rifles.
I also share my personal high-cut helmet set up, and speak briefly about the book Shattered Minds which goes into detail about numerous topics regarding the PASGT and ACH helmets, including their histories, the fight for helmet pads to reduce TBIs, shady companies shorting the Kevlar in their helmet production process, and the bureaucratic mess that is the Department of Defense and the military industrial complex.

    This was good shit man, thank you for putting it together. I was a grunt in the USMC for many years, it doesn't surprise me at all that the Commandant was running something different than what we were allowed to wear, there was always a lot of hypocrisy there. After I got out the of the Corps active duty, I joined the California National Guard also as an infantryman and deployed twice with them. I was (kind of) shocked by how much better gear the Army issued us as we were headed down range compared to the Marines, total bullshit honestly. I was in from 1991 - 2015, good times, glad to be out.

    10 ай бұрын

    Thanks man! I can tell you from personal experience highcut+earpro is the way to go. I used a full cut ACH in Trashcanistan with both traditional headband Sordins & Peltors and it is headache inducing. I would cut apart my green army socks and wrap them around the headband for extra cushion, as well as removing the center circle helmet pad completely and rearranging the pads to fit the headband. Granted this was a decade ago and there weren't as many options for aftermarket helmet pads. But no matter what you're applying pressure to your nugget with anything that gets "sandwiched" between the helmet and your head.

    I agree with a lot of this besides the peltor arc. If you are hooking up comtac to it, sure. Spend the $80. The plastic quality matter. But if you are just hooking up razor walker to it? Nah. You won't even use the plastic clips. Those goes directly into the trash. You are using the razor to hook them up to the wires. Airsoft stuff works just fine.

    There's actually a "kit" for the CVC conversion that has rails and other hardware. But you're drilling more holes into the CVC thereby hurting the integrity of your helmet. Personally I think the CVC conversions look goofy, the PASGT conversion is a little less goofy, and the ACH is the way to go. I would save up for a good condition ACH, I try to price them on my store round the 250ish mark. Sometimes you can get lucky on ebay or military surplus stores and get them for $200 and under. Plus the aftermarket is much better for an ACH than the CVC or PASGT.

    Why isn't there any configuration where you have the ear protection under the full covered helmet instead of cutting it up like that. Those ear sets are not armored

  • @angryasianfab

    @angryasianfab

    5 ай бұрын

    You can run ear pro under a full coverage helmet, it's just very uncomfortable for prolonged periods of time. It's a choice between comfort and protection, and while protection seems like the logical answer when you have to wear migraine inducing earpro under a helmet for hours a day, everyday, you may change your mind. Of course you could just run foam ear plugs, but you lose any potential comms ability without proper earpro.

    What’s the weight difference

  • @geronimo5537
    @geronimo55375 ай бұрын

    These helmets are a trade off. For better comfort and lighter weight you also lose in protection. These will not stop most rifle penetration other than straight lead or expansion rounds. The US mil has been dumping these in mass ever since they were introduced in like 2016. They cant get rid of them fast enough through surplus. The older early 2000s full helmet style is heavier and blocks abit of hearing. But they they do stop basically all typical rifle rounds. High speed is nice. But unless you are wearing these all day everyday. Losing protection makes having this pretty much pointless for a high risk situation that it is intended to be used in. Aka self defense. I really like how this difference is pointed out in the video right off the bat. Outside of the video, I will add that most people seems to forget the headset is not bullet resistant when they choose a helmet.

    It's definitely a trade off between protection and comfort. Personally I am more combat effective when I don't have a migraine headache so I'll take a highcut all day every day.

  • @geronimo5537

    @@angryasianfab I suppose whatever gets one through the day is what counts the most. Personally I only had to wear either for a few hours a day. Before tossing it off into a bag. If I had to wear one all day every day weight would be more of a factor. The extra pound to stop most rifle threats was a weight worth carrying for me. Thanks for your response and helpful video!

    An MSA 2001 highcut helmet will run around $300-500, they're getting pretty rare. Norotos universal shroud $60, OpsCore ACH Arc Rails $80, Crye Precision Air Frame velcro kit $15, 3M Peltors Comtac headphone adapters $60, Wilcox Razor earpro $60, Team Wendy CamFit chinstrap $100, EOD lowprofile counterweight $40, 4D Tactical helmet pads $80. I have a buddy who cerakotes and I believe I paid $100 for that. Prices are approximate of course and some of these items are on my website aanv.us

    High cut is garbage. They are like ww1 Brody no side protection I would NEVER use one of those only if that was All that was available. To show howbad the perform get a gel head and shoot double buck at it I'm sure it's not going to protect your ears face screw that. Youjave 3to4inches of protection from the side comes are not stopping anything. I would go for the ECH or ACH the Mitch ate good. Sorry for saying that but it's not going to protect you as good as a good helmet that covers more of your Head I would take and M1 steel helmet over that hideous looking thing. Or wear that d-ldo helmet.sorry again my guy. I have a SEP2 I like it and it's great for me. See you would be a vegetable after that.

    Being able to remove/put on the muffs without taking your helmet off is far superior. It also cuts weight for when attaching NVGs w/cables and batteries. Every ounce matters up top.
