Hidden Lakes Trail Bushwhack

July 12-16, 2022. Pasayten Wilderness, Okanogan County, Washington.
Started at Billy Goat Trailhead with the intent to get to Ptarmigan Peak via the Hidden Lakes Trail and then Tatoosh Buttes. But only made it halfway there due to excessive deadfall and brush. On the return, some of the trail's worst deadfall was avoided by a detour halfway up the slopes of Nanny Goat Mountain.
With the conditions at the time of this video, this trail is not recommended past Lucky Pass unless one is aware of the conditions and is okay with slow and difficult travel.

This is likely my all time favorite of your videos! Damn shame you didn't get where you intended but knowing when to cut your losses is ALWAYS a difficult decision. But deciding to skirt the deadfall by traversing above it? Genius! So many trails in that area have deadfall problems. I know both WTA and the Pacific Northwest Trail Assn are heading into the Pasayaten to work on a few this summer but it will take many years to get them all caught up. Thank you! We look forward to your next adventure.

Bears are actually kinda shy. They will usually avoid humans. And they are more interested in your food than you, generally. There are a few bears in this area but there are a lot more of them on the west side of the Cascades. Even there, one might hike for years and years and never see one. I've talked to PCT thru-hikers who never saw one all the way from Mexico to Canada. I take standard precautions anywhere in bear country; never have food or scented items in the tent, and always have food stored where a bear can't get it, in a bear box, or a bear-proof canister, or hanging out of reach in a tree. I used a canister and a hang on this trip. I also bring bear spray. Just in case. Better than a gun because it sprays such a cloud it's hard to miss, and also the bear lives through the experience and learns a lesson to avoid humans.

Great trip for solitude, though there was lots of rough going! You got to see some pretty mountain peaks and quite a bit of wildlife. Great to see a trail crew going in, they’ve got plenty of trees to work on, whew. I tried out Baker Lake last weekend, way too busy and too much boat noise for me personally. I went there for a quick one night, but I’d really like to try more of the Wilderness areas …. I’ll be looking for more areas, like in the Pasayaten that might be good for 1 or 2 nights for me solo… any recommendations? Thanks! 👍🥾🥾 🏔🏔☀☀

The Pasayten is big country, so to see a lot of the best parts (like Upper Cathedral Lake or Devil's Dome) you'd need a few days at least. One area that might be good for you is the far east end, Horseshoe Basin. If your vehicle can make it to Iron Gate trailhead that is the fastest way in there. If that road is too much for your vehicle then go in via the Albert Camp trail (would probably need an extra day going in that way). Set up a basecamp above Sunny Pass, and from there you can spend days on side day trips, such as Horseshoe Mountain, Armstrong Mountain (the summit is actually about 100 yards inside Canada), or probably the most challenging one, Windy Peak.

Unfortunately that trail crew was headed in to clear the Billy Goat/Larch Creek trail and not the Hidden Lakes trail I was on.

It can get full there. Big lot, but popular place. Best to show up on a weekday, and earlier the better.

I was just there a few days ago. Lots of snow up there at Artist point and very foggy, but on a clear day it's a good time for walking on firm snow. It wasn't too bad in terms of the crowd on the weekend, but mainly because of the weather. Lake Ann is thawing slowly too.
