Yokohama Chinatown is a foodies fun ground with street food shops every few meters. And there’s about 250 Chinese owned restaurants scattered throughout the district. In fact, it’s the largest Chinatown in Japan as well as one of the largest in the world.
Quick little history about the area, In 1859, the Yokohama seaport was opened and many Chinese immigrants and traders arrived and formed settlements, built schools, community centers, facilities which became the start of what we today know as Chinatown. But because of strict laws during that time, it was only until 40 years later in 1899, were the immigrants permitted to live outside the designated foreign settlement area.
Today, 95% of Yokohama Chinatown visitors are in fact non-Chinese, which is uncommon worldwide for a Chinatown.
You’ll also notice 10 colorful gates throughout Chinatown and 4 main outer gates which serves to protect the area and all based on feng shui.

Dude you're a life saver. I'm Planning my trip to Japan in October and im trying to hit all the good eating spots in Tokyo and Kyoto. I've only been out the country one other time so I'm super excited. Thanks for all the videos you give such good perspective. Would be awesome to see a video that gives a really good perspective on how walking between the areas of Tokyo can be. I know I'll have to take the train but walking around info would be good too. Keep up the awesome videos! Thanks again

When I was a child, I loved eating shark fin soup. As an adult, I now know how cruel and unsustainable the practice of shark finning is. I refuse to eat it now. But what also really disturbs me is how selfish that segment of the Chinese population that continue to eat shark fin. They don’t give a fuck about the endangerment of a species, and justify it by calling it a cultural right, and calls anyone who disagrees with that feeble reasoning.....a racist. Surprise, surprise. City of Calgary tried to ban shark fin from being sold, but of course, they got scared off by threats of racism. I’m sure this comment will find its way to the 50 cent army, and they will be offended and launch a counter argument.

Hi Paolo, firstly absolutely love your videos. I watched most of your videos before my trip to Japan in April 2019, you have helped a lot, thank you so much but there a few things to mention for tourists coming to Japan. 1.The most important one is TOURIST TAX, restaurants vary this but it was a huge issue especially Tokyo compared to Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. Even the fancy hotels charge you per day. The bars upfront as well vary that tax. 2. Pasmo card, if buy it in Tokyo, you can only get your deposit refunded in Tokyo. If you go to another part of Japan then you can have an issue getting refund but you can use it. 3. As a tourist, you can’t rely on street food and most places are VERY EXPENSIVE but if you are coming to Japan you should know that. 4. Most of the best places you review are amazing but it’s important to share that it’s difficult to get a pic. Thanks again for all the videos, as a tourist I found it informative.

Do not be brainwashed by those mambo jumbo....in places like China, Taiwan or Hong Kong, people only eat the sharks fins. But many places like Japan or even Singapore or Thailand, certain sharks are eaten just like most other fishes where there is no wastage....meat (obviously), bones for soup base, even cartilage for soup stock. BTW, the sharks fin mention in the vid is as mentioned is likely replaced by the vermicelli as seen.....real sharks fin is not that cheap.

I don't think its fair to associate his consumption with the cruel practice. You do not know how the shark fin he ate was harvested anyway and its a stretch to say that he promoted any cruel practice simply cos he ate an item with a few flakes of shark in it. You can have your opinion on eating shark fin and animal cruelty (I also hate the practice) but don't make assumptions about his stance on the matter. I understand how demand and supply work but the way I see it, the animal is dead either way so at least eating them means they didn't die for nothing. I don't like it when cows are slaughtered cruelly but I still eat beef. The world isn't so black and white. Just tell him you are uncomfortable with shark fin consumption because its cruel without trying to guilt trip his sense of morality.

Jayos TM You do know the shark only dies because the fisherman cut off the fin and then it drowns in the water right. That right there is extremely cruel and is big toe wasteful.

@@samanthainlove Thats why there is a lot of westerners who harp on certain practices of certain nations but they do not see the whole picture....you cannot lump in the different practices just coz of a few places shown. If you really see the way certain animals are processed in different countries, you will see that the whole animal is consumed, fins, meat, bones even. Then the westerners are very bias.....do you eat chicken eggs or drink milk ? What do you think happens to the old hen or the old cow ? Ever seen first hand what the do to the animals (ever seen saggy meat in the markets, imagine the muscles of an old man vs young man if we eat humans) ? Why nobody reports on them ?
