Hidden History of Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly
The gorgeous Burlington Arcade was built in 1819, but there's far more history to discover beneath its shiny surfaces.
Did you know there's a secret tunnel that runs under its whole length? Or that the upstairs rooms were notorious brothels? In this video I'm sharing some of the hidden history behind this beautiful shopping arcade.

In 1955 my grandmother, while in England, visited the Burlington Arcade and brought me back a tiny silver tea service from there. At age 10, this was very exciting for me! I have it on display today and still love it.
I love this arcade and it was great to hear the colourful stories. My uncle is a picture restorer and many years ago, I remember visiting his studio which was based above the arcade and walking across the flat roof to get to it. It also had fantastic views across London. Lovely talk as always - thank you Katie! 😊
Taken at face value Burlington Arcade is impressive (and photogenic), but your rich additions and tales take intrigue to a new level !
I love this arcade and this stunning building it's attached to! Its always been super busy whenever I have walked through it. Such beautiful shops and style. Great video!

Thank you so much Jennifer! Hope you enjoyed your trip and maybe can visit again some day! :)
Thanks Katie for another great video. Wouldn’t it be great if those basement and passageway areas were opened up for Open House. Dare I ask, have you ever bought anything from one of those expensive shops??
I love walking through Burlington Arcade, and hope that one day I might encounter Bertie Wooster making a quick exit with a silver Cow Creamer. "Modern Dutch".
Most interesting my dear! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😊 Thank you 😄😉
Hi, I live in São Paulo and work in a perfumery, I came across your video because I was researching the street, after all we have the perfume Roja 51, which was to pay homage to perfumer Roja Dove's first store.Thanks.
I just found your channel!! Love everything!
I love walking through there whenever I'm in London, and pretending I've stepped back in time for a few moments.
Superb
Great! I always like walking through there whenever I'm in London.
Brilliant! Loving the stories Katie - thank you as always
Thank you this is a beautiful arcade I was always told to visit which I did on my last visit to London in 2019. Now I have a bit more knowledge I will look at it in more detail upon my next visit, hopefully 2022.
Yes I have walked though the arcade and will go so again one day.
I visited Burlington Arcade in 2018 when I was on holiday in England. I loved it and bought some perfume in Penhaligon's which I don't think is there anymore. There's nothing like it in Perth, where I live. It's too young a city.
Hi Katie, I would have liked it if you could have spoken more about the shops and shopkeepers in the arcade today. How long have they been there, longest serving members of staff, longest established business, how have they been affected by the Pandemic, have they provided on line services, could long established businesses have to close. Maybe something about the Beadles, how long have they worked there, the shoe shine boy, something about him. Human interest stories.

Hi John, as you can probably see in the video all the shops apart from the cafe are closed at the moment but that would be a nice angle for another time!
I like the idea that they were keeping a lid on anti social behaviour even back then!

Haha exactly! We like to think we invented bad behaviour but civil disobedience is nothing new!
Hey Kate, I was wondering, if you are able to do history of famous people around the world ? (For example, Napoleon)
Just one question we're is the nearest runway to charing cross
❤️👏🏻
Stumbled across your channel Kate, as I’m interested in London history, great info, but the sound is terrible, did you have a bad throat when filmed this? I had to turn it up 4 fold but still couldn’t hear properly

Sorry about that! Am working on a better mic situation for the volume but afraid my voice is just my voice, it’s quite husky 🤷🏻♀️

"Built in 1819 by Lord Cavendish, to provide ‘industrious females’ with employment, and to stop people throwing oyster shells into the garden of Burlington House.- TIME OUT
the current Burlington House is NOT the original home of Cavendish.

huh? Burlington House was inherited by the wife of 4th Duke of Devonshire, who was the daughter of Earl of Burlington along with Chiswick house. the 5th duke didn't use it much, it was used by his sister and husband duke of Portland later used by his brother Lord Cavendish later Earl of Burlington, he loved it so much, he bought it the current Burlington house still retained some design made by Earl and Countess of Burlington (the non Cavendish one) it was 2 stories but the current Burlington house was 4 stories but continue the design of the original 2 stories
I prefer the romantic option.... we ladies do 💘 love to shop....
great videos, but the sound is awful
