Hidden Easter Eggs in Hollow Knight
Ойындар
Hollow Knight is pretty light on Easter eggs, but there are a few vague connections we can make between it and the games and media that influenced Team Cherry. But like anything in Hollow Knight, it's hard to truly know how intentional these connections might be.

Fun fact: the Knight, Hollow Knight, Nailmasters, and other characters' use of Nails as weapons is a reference to swords, a lesser-known weapon used in combat and warfare especially in the middle ages, but all the way up to the World Wars due to their usefulness as a primary weapon as well as versatility as a sidearm. In Zelda 1 every sword fires beams when Link is full health, in some top-down Zelda games only the Master Sword gets sword beams at full HP, in Breath of the Wild and Tears the Master Sword shoots beams instead of being throwable like every other weapon, and in Skyward Sword you can fill the blade with sunlight to fire a sword beam.
1. You can strike candles in Jiji's place and also where the little maggots are mourning for false knight, you strike candles in almost all Castlevania games 2. From near the Watchers room, you can take a look at the city of tears through a telescope. In Symphony of the Night, you can take a look outside the castle through a telescope in Outer Wall. 3. The creatures in Colosseum of Fools who throw knifes at you do so in a very similar fashion to the axe subweapon in many Castlevania games

I think personally the biggest reference to Dark Souls on HK would just be the way the story is explained. It's not really a reference, it's more inspired by it. The lore is explained in scraps and dialogue, most of which you have to put together yourself. It's imo one of the best ways of telling a story in videogames, and even if it isn't a reference or inspiration, it's still really cool.
@hb-robo
8 ай бұрын
In fairness that is how all games used to be presented, but usually they were accompanied by a manual that held a shitton of lore and mechanic explanations. The more modern idea that DS and HK use seems to be more like Miyazaki’s famous story of reading western mythology in a language he didn’t understand, giving him a feeling of mystery in its incompleteness. Or for the players, picking up the game secondhand without the manual.
Something that I'm surprised I rarely see talked about is that the Infection of Hollow Knight is very similar to Phazon or the X Parasites of Metroid. They both have the nature of a creepy gelatinous living goo that infects any living being it touches and controls them, but there's also the fact that both Phazon and the Infection connect the hosts to a hive mind led by Phaaze and the Radiance, respectively.
I mean, clearly Hollow Knight is actually a giant reference to A Bug's Life, with a slight homage to the greatest animated movie of all time - The Bee Movie. That is why The Hive is absolutely the best area from Hollow Knight, to celebrate the magnificence of The Bee Movie.

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a bee should be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground. Let's shake it up a little. Barry! Breakfast is ready! Ooming! Hang on a second. Hello? - Barry? - Adam? - Oan you believe this is happening? - I can't. I'll pick you up. Looking sharp. Use the stairs. Your father paid good money for those. Sorry. I'm excited. Here's the graduate. We're very proud of you, son. A perfect report card, all B's. Very proud. Ma! Barry, I told you, stop flying in the house! - Hey, Adam. - Hey, Barry. - Is that fuzz gel? - A little. Special day, graduation. Never thought I'd make it. Three days grade school, three days high school. Those were awkward. Three days college. I'm glad I took a day and hitchhiked around the hive. You did come back different. - Hi, Barry. - Artie, growing a mustache? Looks good. - Hear about Frankie? - Yeah. - You going to the funeral? - No, I'm not going. Everybody knows, sting someone, you die. Don't waste it on a squirrel. Such a hothead. I guess he could have just gotten out of the way. I love this incorporating an amusement park into our day. That's why we don't need vacations. Boy, quite a bit of pomp... under the circumstances. - Well, Adam, today we are men. - We are! - Bee-men. - Amen! Hallelujah! Students, faculty, distinguished bees, please welcome Dean Buzzwell. Welcome, New Hive Oity graduating class of... ...9:15. That concludes our ceremonies. And begins your career at Honex Industries! Will we pick ourjob today? I heard it's just orientation. Heads up! Here we go. Keep your hands and antennas inside the tram at all times. - Wonder what it'll be like? - A little scary. Welcome to Honex, a division of Honesco and a part of the Hexagon Group. This is it! Wow. Wow. We know that you, as a bee, have worked your whole life to get to the point where you can work for your whole life. Honey begins when our valiant Pollen Jocks bring the nectar to the hive. Our top-secret formula is automatically color-corrected, scent-adjusted and bubble-contoured into this soothing sweet syrup with its distinctive golden glow you know as... Honey! - That girl was hot. - She's my cousin! - She is? - Yes, we're all cousins. - Right. You're right. - At Honex, we constantly strive to improve every aspect of bee existence. These bees are stress-testing a new helmet technology. - What do you think he makes? - Not enough. Here we have our latest advancement, the Krelman. - What does that do? - Oatches that little strand of honey that hangs after you pour it. Saves us millions. Oan anyone work on the Krelman? Of course. Most bee jobs are small ones. But bees know that every small job, if it's done well, means a lot. But choose carefully because you'll stay in the job you pick for the rest of your life. The same job the rest of your life? I didn't know that. What's the difference? You'll be happy to know that bees, as a species, haven't had one day off in 27 million years. So you'll just work us to death? We'll sure try. Wow! That blew my mind! "What's the difference?" How can you say that? One job forever? That's an insane choice to have to make. I'm relieved. Now we only have to make one decision in life. But, Adam, how could they never have told us that? Why would you question anything? We're bees. We're the most perfectly functioning society on Earth. You ever think maybe things work a little too well here? Like what? Give me one example. I don't know. But you know what I'm talking about. Please clear the gate. Royal Nectar Force on approach. Wait a second. Oheck it out. - Hey, those are Pollen Jocks! - Wow. I've never seen them this close. They know what it's like outside the hive. @Minh Nguyễn that’s kinda strange… I could’ve swore that their interests in Metroid games were quite evident in their interviews. Sure they talked about Zelda games when asked, but the “sparingly” mentioned Metroid has to do with the fact that one series is more popular than the other. They clearly mentioned the parallel between Samus being a familiar character in a new setting in every game and how Hornet being a powerful female character that is going to progress in a new world. Something that hasn’t been done in ANY Zelda game where the princess is the main character. But I guess that was some of the more recent interviews for the Silksong game so I don’t know which ones you’ve read/watched, but they never once said that they loved Zelda more than Metroid. They dislike certain aspects from both games sure, but that doesn’t mean one is preferred over the other…
In Kingdom's Edge, the ash that coats a lot of the surfaces looks very similar to the pollen stuff from Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Additionally, the creatures seen floating around the Lake of Unn look remarkably similar to the giant flying bugs from Nausicaa. It's hard to believe that neither Ari nor William have watched Nausicaa. (Plus Nausicaa is about a dead world full of dangerous bugs so it's easy to make some connections there).

Thank you so much for getting me into Hollow Knight. I listened to your Hollow Knight lore video half a year ago & forgot about it, and when I was looking through Steam I found Hollow Knight. Just today, I awakened my Nail & got Dreamsoul. I genuinely appreciate you making such wonderful content, it gave me a new favorite game, it’s the first game I’ve played in a while that (in my opinion) tops Undertale.
Oh my God I just watched your other hollow knight references vid and the beginning being the same but opposite is hilarious 10/10
So I know it was likely just a joke, but at least as I understand in lore, the Chozo.... HAVE actually been to every planet in the universe at some point, which is what makes their disappearance the mystery it is, as they were literally the single most prolific race in the history of ever. Oh, and side note, but I'd dare say the Midwife is WAY more like Koh the Facestealer from Avatar.

Honestly, yeah.
The midwife is also similar to no-face in that it seems friendly at first but then tries to eat the Knight. Also, some of midwife's dialogue alludes to her having an unending appetite, which no-face also has in the movie, consuming everything around it. I wouldn't exactly call midwife a reference either, but it is definitely inspired by no-face. There are also quite a few direct inspirations according to the Wiki Fandom, like how the charms are inspired from Paper Mario's badges, I'm not sure how many of these are true though.

ENORMOUS Dark Souls reference Team Cherry actually put in the game: the Watcher Knights are the exact same as the Abysswatchers from DS3
Another interesting reference: The Hollow Knight, a boss that serves as the final boss on some of the game's routes, is named after the hit indie game "Hollow Knight" by the Australian developer Team Cherry.

I think the main reason everyone compares Hollow Knight to Dark souls isn't even all the design similarities but especially the entire mood, aesthetic, and design style. Just the FEELING of it. Dark Souls was also inspired by Berserk, Angel's Egg, and is basically just a 3D metroidvania and shares tons of design philosophy with them in a new genre, so even though they apparently hadn't based the game off Dark Souls at all it probably just ended up feeling so connected because both of them are based off the same sets of other things.
@shayposting
Жыл бұрын
There's also the overall structure of the game tbh. You're in a crumbling civilization and you go and find 3 or 4 important lore dudes, then go back to the hub area where you unlock the final boss that's responsible for the world being the way it is, and from there you decide whether to prolong it or let it end.
@caseyclark5174
Жыл бұрын
@@shayposting True! and the way it handles "quests" is exactly like dark souls did even, any other game there's like some big explanation/story/lore dump between characters right in your face, you get a map marker to an exact place, you go do the thing they wanted there and then something happens next as a result. done. Dark souls and then hollow knight too, there's just a few survivors hidden around this empty fallen ruined kingdom where you randomly stumble across them on your journey for brief nice moments in an otherwise empty world of only enemies, you share some little moment together and then you continue their questline if you manage to find them in another harder location later, repeat until they either realize something about themselves and find purpose or in many cases die

Another reference might be the "Watcher Knights" Boss, very similar to the "Abyss Watchers" Boss from Dark Souls 3. At first you fight only one knight in a Room where a lot of dead knights lay on the floor, as the Fight progresses, more and more knights awaken from the dead, basically the same concept as with the Abyss Watchers.

Dead cells has A LOT of references. Though, my favorite of them all in the "commando armor" item, which is a reference to the Commando from Risk of Rain/2(a very good rogue-like I must add).
There was more to say about Grimm's attack patterns and those of Draculas in later Castlevania titles Also, regarding Dark Souls, remember that you're literally trekking through the ruins of an ancient kingdom filled with zombies of its old inhabitants. The comparison could not be clearer.

9:25 "while there aren't any specific references, there are a lot of similarities" is exactly how I felt about Dark Souls' impact on HK. Aside from the shade, there's nothing too explicit, but so much of the themes, level design, atmosphere, storytelling, and lore unfolding seems to be at least distantly influenced by DS1. Yes, I know, Dark Souls is not the only game to do those things. But it was very very influential, and even if HK isn't directly influenced, it's definitely possible the industry was so influenced that it got to HK indirectly.

There are definitely mechanics and ideas coming from Dark Souls. But most ambitious + difficult + moody action games are gonna be drawing from Dark Souls. That’s where the good ideas are.
That not even a second long clip to the luigi‘s mansion soundtrack made me laugh out loud, fabulous video 👍🏻
Grubberfly's elegy is probably a reference to the master sword from zelda, as in some of the Zelda games, when using the sword at full hp, you will shoot a projectile resembling your sword that travels straight forward
Grimms rising slash attack and air drill attack seem to be referances to Darkstalkers Morrigans shadow blade and Demitris bat spin special moves. The poses are very similar and all three characters have gothic fantasy inspirations and stuff.
One thing I think you missed is the connection between the False Knight and the Asylum Demon in Dark Souls. Large grey guy with a mace drops out of the ceiling and then later the floor of the boss arena falls through.

I feel like "large, imposing martial bad guy swing at you with a heavy and slow weapon" is a pretty common boss trope. Doing a second phase or boss arena by crashing through a floor or a wall is also just a convenient way of shifting the environment while still making narrative sense.

Some of the interior design and architecture, mainly the tram and lamp posts, is a nod to the music video for "Sometimes the Stars" by The Audreys. The picture at 8:34 also references the beginning of the music video.
i think it's commendable that team cherry had the foresight to include a james corden reference while his career wasn't as huge :D
5:50 bruh that was so short xD
Help I've been stuck in a loop for 5 hours, each time I finish this video I have to watch the hollow knight Easter eggs in other media and then it takes me back here, is this my life now?
Even though this video a bit old, I feel like I should mention some stuff about the dream warriors. Galien to me specifically resembles death’s first phase in Castlevania:Aria of Sorrow, and I really doubt no-eyes’ attacks weren’t based off of Medusa heads. Xero is also similar to the Flying Armor from Dawn of Sorrow, what with the red armor, floating above the player with swords floating on either side, and attacking by shooting the swords at the player.

Have you ever looked at the movie Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind? Another movie focusing on insects and an infection spreading throughout the land. Lots of amazing shots of these giants insects in the background that look like they came straight out of hollow knight. It’s a movie from studio ghibli so even more of a connection since we know they’re a fan
Midwife is definitely an Avatar reference, specifically to Koh the face stealer spirit.
