Haha! I appreciate it 🙏🏻
I was just recently taking my understanding of log footage to the next level. If I am correct log, linear raw, contrast, dynamic range, and bit depth are all intertwined. This is a nice explanation of the 2 most common ways to manipulate contrast. In your linear contrast example, you have reduced the captured dynamic range to increase contrast while with the S curve you do not but with different consequences.
Really really good explanation dude!

You're such an under viewed channel. This is so useful and explained well. I'm looking at this from more a photo retouching perspective.

That's great! Photo editing/retouching and film colorists have a lot in common

Great explanation
True, that was a hidden knowledge to me. You've clearly explained the difference.. Subscribed. Do you have a video on how to use the pivot?

Not yet, but that's a great idea for the future
This actually the first video I’ve seen on the topic that made sense. Interesting explanation that’s brief yet doesn’t confuse me. Is the hybrid approach similar to the local contrast sliders? I suppose the next question is whether there’s a sane methodology to tweaking contrast utilizing your approach or if it’s still “tweak to taste.” Seriously, nobody really explains (that I’ve found) wtf contrast is. Thanks for doing this. Your teaching chops are solid!

Thank you David! Finding the "Correct" contrast is pretty subjective. It's all about finding the intended vision for the film If you want something more scientific, camera manufacturers often have a Rec709 lut that you can apply to their log footage that is their best guess at appropriate contrast
so to do both in your project settings do you keep the contrast curve to linear then apply the roll off via curves in high/Low soft? OR do S-Curve option and do the linear adjust with Lift and Gain to control both? The above aspect specifically talking about your Project settings in the cog wheel area

Often I develop s curve contrast using the curves tool or a 3rd party plugin
