STORY
Palace Burnay was commissioned by a Portuguese count and designed by an Italian architect. Completed in 1734, it served as the summer retreat for the Saldanha family until its acquisition in 1879 by a wealthy businessman and philanthropist: Count Henrique Burnay.
After his death in 1909, the palace became the property of the state and, in the 20th century, the palace went from a summer retreat to the administrative headquarters of the Technical University of Lisbon.
As the university occupied the palace, it underwent further renovations to adapt to its needs, while keeping in mind the palace's historical and architectural significance.
Now, in 2024, there are talks of a future investment that aims to revive Burnay Palace. We will go more in-depth on this topic later on, including the full history of the palace and its many residents.
In the meantime, Burnay Palace awaits restoration amidst ongoing acts of vandalism and theft.

They should be ashamed of themselves letting such a beautiful, historical place like that fall apart and allowing vandalism to take place in it. Thank you for sharing it with us.

University tour that place apart to make it their own they should be responsible for rebuilding it back to where it was. At least maintained enough to where people can’t get in and do any more damage. I know it would cost a sheer fortune. But it should be their obligation after tearing it all apart

I almost started crying when I saw the graffiti on the grand interior. I truly can’t imagine this beautiful and historic building being discarded. I hope it is saved!
Im absolutely mesmerized by the beauty of this place. From the woodwork to the ceiling, absolutely gorgeous ❤
So maddening that the University has let this place go in such disrepair. This place should be renovated and saved ❤
I have a problem with anxiety but when I listen to the narrator's voice I feel so calm. Thank you!! Thank you for everything of showing the beautiful architecture
I love how they had pictures to show you what it had looked like. Beautiful place. Very grand.
Omg what an opening you did Lesley!!!! It’s so big and grand. I hope they restore it to its former glory! ❤❤❤ I love your 1800s outfit! You look so grand and gentlemanly in it 😊

We need to find a billionaire to save all of these historical homes, then the towns could charge for tours putting money back into their towns and upkeep of all of this history.
You will never have this level of workmanship again, incredible and sad to see it decaying. Progress is not vandalism and crime.
what a shame seeing the graffiti, and Deterioration of such a beautiful building
Beautiful palace in desperate need of restoration. Glad to hear the Portuguese government is in the process of restoring the place, turning it into a museum of historic Portuguese art and artifacts. It would be foolhardy to allow such a grand, beautiful place and grounds to be lost. It's a glorious historical testament; a small important piece of the country's rich history.
Amazingly beautiful. This structure needs to be restored.
Your introduction opening the door Leslie- WOW! 😮
Another beautiful video. I was happy to see Danny given his due in the closing credits for his filming and editing work. I think the University of Lisbon, who has a school of architecture by the way (!!!???), has much to be ashamed of for allowing the building to deteriorate. It's wonderful to hear that there are new plans and a substantial amount of money apparently planned to save and restore and renovate. Hopefully, the building and grounds will quickly be secured and restoration will begin very soon. Great job guys. Thank you for sharing with us.
I can only imagine how it must have felt to live in such a majestic palace

Love your channel. The difference I see, is that your more in depth about the historical aspects of the people and the homes you visit. You have better knowledge of architecture than most. Much love you guys. Great travels, and thanks for showing me these places i could never get to in my lifetime.

Loves and hugs from America 🇺🇸 Leslie, what a magnificent castle I looked beyond the decay and it's beautiful how fortunate for those people to have live in a grand place, love your outfit, the cane makes you look important to do this documentary 😊❤
We need to give some credit to Lesley, scaling some of those areas and 200 year rickety timber laden structures is dangerous. Hats off to him 👏 cheers from Ohio.
Wow! Gorgeous production, very professionally presented. Congratulations to Lesley and Danny.
Wow!!! You look amazing Lesley 🎩👌very well-dressed and a perfect fit for a 17th-century Palace. You really made us feel like we teleported back in history by putting in the extra effort of dressing the part. It's so nice to see people like you who appreciate these beautiful historic places and bringing them back to life. Well done as always 👍💯⚔🛡⚔
This palace looks extremely different than the footage from Finders Beepers History Seekers 3 weeks ago where it was explored at night in the dark! Everything is absolutely gorgeous and should be preserved not changed for government! Such craftsmanship and elegance! Opulent ceilings and fantastic mosaics and stained glass! Can’t imagine all of the man hours that went into the details! The 3D painting in the entrance hall is just brilliant and beyond words! Excellent job displaying the forgotten grandeur of this incredible place! Gotta say that I really dig your clothing choice, wonderful style! Looking good!😉
Hola!
Tg for showing us the uniqueness of these places. Many of which weren't built by our civilization.

My dear Lesley, I absolutely adore your gentlemen’s outfit from back in the day! You look so handsome and the same as the men in the photos from back in the time. This was one of the most impressive places you’ve ever documented! Just gorgeous! Love, hugs, and thanks from North Carolina, USA! ♥️🤗🙏🇺🇸
You Gents never fail to impress! What a spectacular palace, I hope it can be saved 🙏👍❤️
Greetings from Florida in the U.S.A. This is your best one yet! It’s always a pleasure to hear the ding of a new video. They always make me sad, but I look forward to them. These always make me think of my dad. He used to take us exploring abandoned places. He would have loved these.
Leslie, you did an outstanding job on the history and showing us this beautiful old relic. You looked very dapper in your 19th century frock. That was a joy to see and totally disheartening at the same time. What the Vandals hadn’t done the university did Tearing that place apart to do what they did to the building is just unforgivable really Thank you for bringing it to our attention I can only imagine what it must’ve been like Was Danny with you? He was very quiet if he was. You did an outstanding job. I like the intro as well the way you set it up and the music was spot on really really well done ❤ from LIZ in California
Wow! Magnificent palace, I loved all the murals on the ceiling, and the gardens, such beauty. It would be really nice to see this palace restored. 😊
Saw this place a few weeks ago on Finders Beepers. I do love their channel, but It was filmed in the dark and not as informative. I must say you have outdone yourself with this documentary. Everything about this video was top notch!!
Merveilleux comédien , dans un décor de rêve !👍👍👍
What a beautiful palace so pretty. The suit you wore brought the era to life and hope they restore it to its original glory. Thank you both of you ❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤Brilliantly crafted documentary. Leslie, you always bring your best 🎉. Love how you take me back in time telling the history & showing the incredible art that once stood beautifully . This place is the most draw-dropping place I’ve ever seen. I hope you reach the right people to help restore this valuable property. I’m very sad they turned it into a university and gut the kitchen. I love the passion and dedication you guys have to bring Awareness of lost properties. Much love 💕 🥰😘
Hi Lesley, If this was in the UK, English Heritage would have this listed as Grade 1 historical. and have this restored. Get the voluteers involved, too. They would have this cleaned up, and looking good in no time. Such a waste letting it get run down like that. The Portugese government needs a prod in the backside.
Do they not have historical organisation's that help these beautiful places? Why don't colleges or universities get volunteers to come in and clean up these places and form some type of union to create fundraising for this place? This would be a wonderful wedding or conference venue. Where are all the billionaires of Spain? So very sad.
That place made you look very small. That a shame about that mess in there and vandals stealing those big pictures. What a beautiful place
Wow! Thank you Lesley for this documentary! What a beautiful place! Hopefully something can be done soon to stop the vandalism and restore it to it's original state. Loved your tour. ❤
i enjoyed watching this 😍 I didnt even noticed it has been 45minutes. it's almost midnight in my country and supposed to be sleeping but it did wake me up. Thank you guys for sharing this to us
Magnificent presentation.
Wow, the entryway is astonishing. Absolutely gorgeous ❤
What a stunning location! Your best video ever!!! Those rooms are beautiful, especially the all-white one. It took my breath away! You have brought world-wide awareness to this beautiful place!
I’ve been a fan since 2000, watching you over the years had been amazing! This intro was breathtaking! I had goosebumps and needed to pick my jaw up off the floor! Hats off to you, my friend!
Hi Lesley & Danny, 😊 This was a Beautiful Palace & Just Horrible the Vandalism, Disgraced Many Things There!! It`s a Shame that the Lisbon University left & left this Palace to have Vandalism & Go into Decay!! I really Loved the Grand Entrance & the Largest Chandelier I Ever Saw!! Plus All the Pictures of What the Rooms Looked like Back in the Day, were Beautiful!! Thanks for the Tour Lesley & Danny & Your Outfit Lesley!!❤ Take Care & have a Safe Trip to Your Next Journey!!😎✌❤ Love Barb from Central Illinois USA❣
Amazing Lesley !!! Thanks for the Journey to this abandoned 😢Palace .
Thank you Lesley it is a beautiful palace
What an outstanding piece of historical architecture! The designer/builder spared no expense and ensured that the owners wealth and love for grandeur was to be seen in each and every room - even in the gardens. Great documentary Lesley and Danny. Always love your bringing viewer’s attention to even the smallest of details, and sharing the history of the time-period and specifics of this amazing property.
I really appreciate how respectful you are of the properties you take us to. I love that you dressed up and showed pictures of people and how they looked back when the Palace was in its full glory. Thank you for saving these historical gems through your wonderful videos. 🎉🎉❤❤

Thank you so much for this documentary. Well done. An amazing palace. I do hope this history can be restored. 🎩 Hats off to you too!!!❤
Hey dear Lesley, I had to rewatch the amazing documentation about this fascinating and historically significant monumental palace in Lisbon. Wow, Lesley I admire your thorough appreciation and your incredible knowledge, when you were presenting the palace. And - of course I loved your very elegant attire of an early 20th century gentleman. It fits you perfectly, even the way how you were walking and holding your cane,..oh my the perfect gentleman of that by gone period! In this way you gave new life to the once wonderful halls and rooms of this location. Of course there were luckily still a lot of the original decors from the late 19th century of the Burnay aera, still showing the splendor of that aera back in the days. Of course I also hate seeing these awful traces of brainless vandalism and ugly graffity. I loved the beautiful ceilings and that breathtakingly elaborate grand entrance hall with the double stair case. - After my opinion they should have retained the palace and the surrounding gardens in exactly the way it was still in the 1940-ies. All these beautiful priceless interior decorations, the furniture, the chandeliers, the tapestries, the paintings,.. and so on would have resulted into a magnificient museal palace into the present time. When I saw the photographs showing the state of the early 20th century, I can only say, that it's such a shame, seeing now this place stripped of its valuable interior of considerable art historical significance. - For instance in the UK quite a number of grand mansions, castles and palaces are kept in their original state with all the lavish interiors, like for instance Longleat Manor and Blenheim Palace. - I am glad to hear, that there are at least plans to renovate and preserve this historical location, which is truly an architectural gem! Dear Lesley I found your documentation so excellent, that I could imagine it to be presented for instance on Discovery channel. Also Dannys camera work was simply excellent in combination with the background music. Thank you so very much for sharing this unique explore, bro. Wishing you all the best, many hugs, peace and kindest regards.
This has to be the finest mansion you have ever shown us. What a gorgous place. To let this to get even this bad is a crime to every person in the world. Its just disgusting. The government of this country should be totally ashamed of them selves. They should resign from office. To let this place rot to ruin makes me sick. I just cant get over this stupidity of the fools that are responsible for this disgrace. I feel so bad for you Lesley. Doing all you can do to try to save these works of art knowing that it could be all for nothing. Its biger than you or myself to do anything to save these incredible mansions. Dust to dust will be what happends to everything on earth. We do have the power to save some of this things until the end of man on earth
Absolutely stunning. Vandalism makes me angry! Thank you Leslie and Danny! Wow!
Спасибо вам огромное за прекрасный обзор, это самый лучший замок❤❤❤😢
Thank you for such an amazing tour! The ceilings are so beautiful, no words to describe this place!
Lindo, lindo. Uma viagem no tempo. 🤩🥰
I am always so amazed by your discoveries of such beautiful and historical places you visit. Thank you for your devotion of showing the world of such rare gems. I wish that they could all be returned to their glory days. It's history that needs to be preserved.
What a shame. Thank you for making this documentary. Hopefully it has brought the attention it deserves. Mr. Burnay must be turning over in his grave 😭
You deserve so much praises!!!! ❤❤❤ Well done! 😊
Amazing, the place and your detailed description and historical documentation of it. I couldn’t believe the grand central corridor walls were a ‘3d painting’ I thought they were carved and sculptured walls, like all the other features of the building. I appreciated all your work and authenticity, with the historical photographs. A decadent time to have lived, if you were rich. Hard to imagine major means of socializing for a female would have been in such surroundings and situations.
Well done , lesley and Danny ❤❤ it is so beautiful palace 🎉🎉 I enjoyed the video ❤❤ thank you for sharing 🎉🎉
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! Very well done! Exceptionally narrated, perfectly flowing, and most of all...intriguing to watch! I found myself immersed in the details, the beauty and the artistic splendor of this location! THIS PLACE SHOULD BE RESTORED TO BECOME A NEW MUSUEM OF ART!! The location, once restored, would be an outstanding place for functions, parties, wedding receptions, business retreats and of course for all the art lovers and architectural students and admirers from all over the world! THANK YOU for documenting this space. You may have just brought enough light to this dusty jewel for its facets to finally reflect the beauty and splendor it can once become again in the capitol of Portugal!.
Am hoping that this exposure will find the help to restore this palace.
You r amazing Leslie!!!😊
