The last race was in Athens 2004, I remember it very very very very very very well I was very young, I was with my family in Morocco, my father was driving in the motor way and then suddenly everybody stopped there were thousands of Moroccans parking their cars in the motor way, not moving and people outside of their cars standing close to their cars and everybody listening to the radio (it was 2004) The entire country stopped breathing shops closed, empty streets, exactly like during Morocco's matchs in the world cup and I still remember hearing the Moroccan commentator on the radio repeating hysterically "Hicham Lagat Hicham Lagat Hicham Lagat Hicham Lagat Hicham Lagat" in an extremely loud and emotional voice and then said "our hero did it, our legend did it" and burst out in tears like many people in the highway That was one of the moments I will never forget and just few days later, once again, the entire country stopped breathing : it was again Hicham going for the 2nd olympic gold medal at 5000m extremely proud to be Moroccan Long live my country

I'm an Algerian and I confirm this message. He's the best.

He truly is. Legendary runner. In 1996 Atlanta he felt down. In Sydney 2000 he lost. In Athens 2004 he won 2 golden medals. He still is WR- recorder holder in the 1500/mile.

I was a kid who just started track and field when elguerrouj started dominating the track . I watched all of his races live and it was such a privilege

Thank you. This is a fantastic video. It gives me goosebumps and I have watched it many times. I am a lifelong fan of athletics, and of Hicham el Guerrouj, amongst others. His story at the Olympics is a remarkable tale of talent, strength, success, failure, failure again, despair, and then a final incredible victory. Undoubtedly the greatest middle distance runner of all time.

In my childhood i used to watch Hicham races , only one time i saw hicham arriving second it was in one of the golden league meetings befor world.champion of paris in 2003. i got to.see hicham.wining 4 world champion in row. as for the olympics in.atalanta 1996 i was 7years old kid i was waiting so badly for.the race but as it.was in USA i couldnt stay awake but while i am sleeping i heard my brothers talking saying Hicham fell. in the morning when i woke up i asked did.hicham wins and before hearing the. response i realised that he did not win from the features of my brother then.i realised that what i.heard was right... Hicham fell in 2000 olympics were in Sidney i couldnt see the game for a reason that i cant remember i.came.back.home at noon time. runing to ask about what hicham did this time, and my mom told me.Hicham didnt win he arrived second. you wont believe how that new turn me so sad and i couldnt believe it . as in my mind hicham.will lose a race only if he fell as in 1996 but he didnt . how did kenyans defeat him summer 2004 . it was time.for the olympics in Athena i was helping our neibours who.were preparing for their daughter wedding but i.was looking at the clock because i.dont want to miss that one . i was aware that its the last olympic race of hicham. you wont believe how the last 100m felt OMG my heart beat fast i never saw hicham in olympics and i.dont wish to see him loosing in his last race but hicham.struggled and beat Lagat and what a shout i did with my brothers . the dream came true Hicham is olympic champion after4 days it was time.for.5000 final and were so relaxed as if we knew that hicham will beat Bekele and the champion did it again as kids we used to love watching cartoon the channel.sometimes tv cuts the cartoon to.show us parliament politician shit and that was the most upsetting thing. but when they cut cartoon for hicham race. we all feel happy we love cartoon but we love hicham we enjoy his race and see him wins then tv brings back cartoon Hicham el guerrouj represent great mememories for our generation we didnt see.said.aouita runing but watching hicham all.these years was great part of our lives hope.morocco stop spending millions.on.Football.instead spending money on.futur champion because we are sure that Athletism is the best for.morocco and not football.

I was a kid just starting track and field with a dream , I watched all his races live , I never missed one race of his . What a privelage.

From 4:29 minutes....it's all Hicham el Guerrouj! Constantly speeding up the pace to an ultimate limit. The pace went faster and faster. Prior to this race hicham experienced 2 olympic defeats in Atlanta and Sydney and sickness before Athens in 2004. His only credits were his world records and world championships. Hicham knew this was his last chance for olympic Gold and has taken an oath before the match to never hold back. With this mentality hicham pushed himself to the finish, to write history as the greatest Miler in history and place himself with Paavo Nurmi in 1924.

Yes Thanks to god (Allah), Hicham el Guerrouj played also in 1990's until 2006. His last Olympic final in 2004 was a "bombshell" in athletics, after his previous defeats. He won the double gold in 1500m & 5000m, that was not done since 80 years (Paavo Nurmi, Finland, 1924 in Paris Olympic). El Guerrouj was the best mental and pyshical runner that Morocco ever had. That he's still world record holder is insane. He was on another level & is legendary runner.

That’s about 1.45 for last 800m I am not sure that words “mind blowing” would do the justice. You must be ********* kidding me makes more sense 😂. It’s even hard to compare with Jacob Ingebretson which I totally adore.So different running styles .El Guerrouj stride is enormous comparing the way Jacob runs. I keep watching and watching and watching and still speechless

In the past 20 years (yes 20 years!) only 3 runners have come within 5 seconds of his Mile record. Alan Webb 3.78 seconds away 14 years ago, Souleiman 4.19 seconds away 7 years ago and Kiplagat 4.69 seconds away also 7 years ago. That's it! 20 years, 5 seconds only 3 far away attempts. The longevity of this record is an unmatched record in itself.

I think Noah Ngeny really pushed him that little bit further. What an amazing race, where two athletes push themselves to the limit, both surpassing the World record, and no one to this day being able to get anywhere near them. Definitely one of the greatest records, though given it is not an Olympic event, it can't be held in as high regard as his 1500 record to me.

El Guerrouj himself considers his mile record as one of the toughest to reach, much more than the 1500m one. Thanks to Noah Ngeny being a competitor for that record on the same race. Maybe if he had been on that same shape a year before, the 1500m WR would have been something around 3'25.

Ngeny is good friend of Hicham el G. Ngeny won from him in Sydney 2000. But Hicham won world record from Ngeny. In 1996 Atlanta Hicham fell hard .So both have seen failure. It was not all sunshine for Hicham. He worked very hard for it.

Try and imagine what this man represents for a small and relatively poor country like Morocco, being the absolute greatest of all time in his field. He was and still is their Ayrton Senna, their Roberto Duran, their Haile Gebrselassie. The living proof that you can make it to the very top coming from a small village in the mountains. There was never a finer ambassador of that country and there probably never will be. All hail the king, Hicham ElGuerrouj!

Im Moroccan ! Morocco is big enough country and we do all our best to kill the poverty ( work in progress ) but we do well in Africa . But sûre that the country side need more and more political and investment interest . I confirm that he is our SENNA . Cause in football we face corrupt competition organised by Fifa . In several world cups we faced troubles with referees . We are Proud of Hicham ICON LIVING LEGEND . And proud of all the others legends .
