Hi-Fi Review ! PSB's AM5 - MSG Added to the Award-Winning P5 Speaker (Take 2; Ep:23)

Ғылым және технология

The PSB Alpha P5 passive loudspeaker, which was released in 2019, received near-universal critical praise. Building on the P5 platform, PSB introduced the Alpha AM5 in late 2020. The AM5 is a powered loudspeaker with digital and analog inputs. In fact, the left- and right-channel analog inputs feed an onboard phono stage, so a pair of AM5s can be used with a turntable as well as a digital source. This new speaker also also features digital signal processing (DSP) to tailor the frequency response and control the MaxxBass, MaxxDialog, and Maxx3D sound-enhancement effects it offers.
On December 1, 2020, Gordon Brockhouse reviewed the AM5 on SoundStageSimplifi.com, for which it received SoundStage! Reviewers’ Choice and 2020 Product of the Year awards. In his review Gordon wrote this: “As countless reviews have attested, the Alpha P5 is a killer speaker for $399/pair. For $200 more, the Alpha AM5 adds a built-in amplifier tailor-made for it, with a very capable phono stage, a USB DAC, Bluetooth, and useful DSP that allows the AM5 to transcend the limitations of its size and power output. The math is compelling: for $599, you get a dynamite system with everything you need to enjoy music and movies -- just add a source or two. Enthusiastically recommended.”

In this Take 2 video, Jay Lee re-examines the Alpha AM5, gives his thoughts on its performance and features, and compares it to the passive P5. Do Jay’s thoughts mirror Gordon’s? Watch the video to find out more.

All of hifi audio is about creating an illusion: the illusion of instruments, of soundstage, or singers standing in space in front of you. So why not also have DSP give the "illusion" of bass, as long as it sounds good?

These sound like they're incredibly versatile, easy setup for a dual Movie and 2 or 2.1channel music setup.

Jay, any hesitation on recommending the Tekton mini lore small tower speaker? I could do Elac Unifi ub52 or, the Tekton mini lore. Any feedback if you have the time?

Jay, luv ya like a bros...but no turntable?! Not in the room or not in your possession? Vinyl is such a great experience as I'm sure you're aware of. All ribbing aside would luv to hear any analog/vinyl reviews from you.

PSB has an advantage over other speaker companies: they share an owner (and ostensibly engineering) with NAD. Go Canada!

8:08 Did you just say that you would need to recommend a system of $500,000 to complete with the PSB?! And I thought saying that the Lore outperforms 10k systems was overhyped... 😉

@@garykarlin1777 yes. Well even $2000. The point being is that - AM5 is a cost effective way to get good sound. And I think you got that context.
