That's what i was thinking too. No goofy stupid shit involving mutilating a teddy bear or calling spirits from the dead. The "ritual" was eating something, getting some sleep, and expressing yourself through art, photography, and writing. That's so endearing.

Id just like someone who cares about research doing it well doing it which she for sure does.

the fact that "teleportation" was literally just getting people to take care of themselves is amazing and still makes me smile from time to time

this was one of the few ARGs that was fun to actually follow on my own, wasn't super tryhard/edgy, and had a solid conclusion.

I was a part of that discord! It was a fun time! Celeste's relevance was that they sort of acted as a warning; they were Anita's grandfather's guardian angel or something, and they died of sickness stench, taking Anita's grandpa with them

That "all things come to an end" poem was originally from a Beanie Baby named (iirc) The End. It was initially planned to be the final Beanie Baby ever released, though that didn't last long. I thought that was a nice little touch, since Beanie Babies were mentioned as part of the blog's early content before the ARG began. :)

I got freaked out when this happened because at the time, two of the paintings used for the ARG were also on my bedroom wall. I usually don't get spooked by ARGs but that coincidence freaked me right out and I immediately shut it out and refused to look at it lol it'll be cool to see what this was all about finally.

I’m gonna be honest honest honest: I’d love to see you cover more ARGs/Unfiction/dark content. I’d love to see a channel with a less dark aesthetic covering these topics

Agreed. As much as I enjoy Night Mind and Nexpo, the tryhard edgy horror boy aesthetic can get old quick.

Izzy did it way, way better than the horror/creepypasta channels would've ever managed to do. I just hate the usual deep voice and super slow talking manner of presenting the material. That's just mildly annoying, not creepy.

Yeah, I feel like horror channels talk way too slow. I get that it’s supposed to be for the aesthetic, but I can’t watch videos with talking that slow unless I watch on like 1.5 or 2x speed. Izzzy actually talks at a decent enough speed and in a more engaging way so that I don’t get bored or disinterested and change videos!

theory: the arg was made to help others with depression, angels are often seen as the light and limbo is the place between heck and haven the sickness mentions black spots witch is a sig of a curse in some mythology, on top of this "I'm sick" is a depressive thought too

This was my thought too. Like the entire thing is this allegory for depression. Anita "getting max back" after she was pulled from some kind of hell. Furthermore, this reference about angels with the sickness causing others to get sick essentially also really made sense to me. Depression in someone can have such far reaching effects on those that love them that only want to help them. This entire thing was absolutely beautifully designed.

This was so cute actually :D I like that despite all the creepy stuff the ritual felt so non threatening because it's all just cool self care activities and the positive ending was a nice change

I love this ARG cuz I'm honestly getting sick of all the unnecessarily demented Dead Children, Serial Killers, Demons, etc ARGs that are common now. I love that genre of stuff but like it's so oversaturated at this point, this was a nice change

kings and emperors used to be 15! Telling people they are children at 17 18 forcing them to obey is sick and designed to break our spirit and force us into a life of brainwashed obedience. What a creative idea! Those two people who made it should be very, very proud of themselves, a great concept executed to perfection that didn’t overstay its welcome. I totally agree!! I think a lot of ARGs get carried away and end up really messy and convoluted and pretty much impossible to understand- max2019's short runtime really worked in it's favor and just enhanced the experience! They should be super proud :D

This is a really neat ARG. With a cool concept and story and lore. So many ARGs try so hard to be creepy and edgy but they don’t have an interesting story other than trying hard to be disturbing. This one took advantage of smth very specific to tumblr and had a really nice concept about online guardian angels. Kudos to the team and the players.

Once you mentioned the website I was like, "ugh, another ARG." But I'm glad I kept watching because this one was actually more creative, wholesome, and overall interesting than other ARGs. It's really impressive that two 15-year-olds put it all together. I still prefer the other topics you cover but I enjoyed this one as something different.

I was in one of the discords dedicated to finding lore and figuring out the puzzles and communicating with the ARG while it was active, super fun times. One of the creators was lurking in our server the entire time, and we (the entire server) vc'd with both of them at the end of it all. On one of the days of the arg we didn't get any updates at around the usual times bc the creators were literally at pride lol, which we had all joked about before we knew that really was the actual reason we didnt hear anything

some fun facts about guardian angels that most don't know about(outside of the Max ARG lore): 1) They aren't "reused" every person has had their own guardian angel and that one is with them forever. There for it is common to see a crying angel over a baby's grave as their guardian angel didn't get long to protect them. 2) Some folks have more then one! (mainly priests and others) 3) Christ Himself also had some and there are some who think His guardian angel was Saint Michael the Archangel himself.

i remember when this concluded and a girl i was following had like a 3-day-long meltdown over the fact that it had a more or less happy ending and outed herself as a terf in the process. good times.

This sounds like a game of New World of Darkness, Demon: The Fallen. With all The cyber demons and angels and all.

ive heard of this ARG but i really like the way you explained it here ! never really knew how it ended. id say for some 15 yos messing around on tumblr they did a pretty good job considering they did all this spontaneously one week.

this arg was a very formative piece of work for me and its stuck with me since i saw it as it came out. its influenced basically every piece of art ive made of my own because it was so odd, charming, and tender. something about the concept of guardian angels caring for their charges through the internet, and watching us experience our childhoods through the websites we used… it was very touching to me for a lot of reasons. “this is truly the experience of a contemporary guardian angel” is still one of the most impactful lines ive heard in a piece of writing. i have gone through the neocities so often because its so emotional for me to click those links and imagine what mine would be if i were to have had someone like max. growing up on the internet in the early 2010s was scary, and confusing, and i think anyone my and anita’s age can understand the wish that you’d had someone looking after you while you browsed online as a child, and that fear and want of protection is what max2019 is all about so thank you for covering it izz :)

wow. i remember really wanting to do an ARG like this when i was a teenager. the amount of creativity and effort that went into this, and the fact that it was run by two 15 year olds, is very impressive. with a satisfying conclusion and positive message too. much respect to this team. hope they go on to do more creative projects like this in the future :)

I love how this ARG had the potential to be absolutely terrifying (I got chills up my spine at the page that just said "I'm so sick" over and over), but actually it wound up being a really wholesome and beautiful story about appreciating your life and humanity, with a happy ending to boot. Thanks for sharing this one!

I love the part of the arg where people were told to go touch grass

this is one of my favorite args, straightforward and well put together! i always liked how max's inflections as a porn bot were hard to interpret and vague at first, kind of like she's struggling to get out her message while in limbo, but trying so hard. it was a beautiful story!

The idea of angels, or really any supernatural entity, communicating or existing through archetypes modernizing to include things like internet persona archetypes and the associated bots is fascinating. Out of all this that bit of world building stuck out to me as particularly brilliant.

i'm SO happy to see other people covering this arg, i was one of the players and was amazed at the depth of something that only lasted for a few days on tumblr!! my arg podcast (argonauts pod) covered it a little while ago, and it's great to see more documentation of it finally out there!

i loved max2019 so so so much! i watched it all go down in real time when it happened, and i participated in the teleportation ritual as well!! i generally tend to enjoy args more when they are creative like this and have the possibility of being influenced to have a good ending.

I think that one of my favorite parts of this ARG is that sceneteenz tumblr icon was created by someone on the discord community, as a lil' fanart of sorts (before then it was just the default icon.) Imagine everyone's surprise when sceneteenz actually changed their icon to it!

i was actually in the discord during this ARG and helped decode some of the messages!! it was a wild ride and i'm so glad SOMEONE is finally covering it!

Tumblr has really diversified to the point where even longtime dedicated users may not have heard of a so-called sitewide event or trend. Like, I had to accept this recently when my friend was talking about how she hated imagine posts, and I had literally never heard of that before. This was a pretty cool look into something I had no idea existed

this is one of the better-written ARGs i've ever been around for and i think a big reason for that is that they didn't try to stretch it out beyond what it was meant to be. it was a contained story that began and ended exactly when it was meant to and it did its job perfectly. i love this one a lot.

Say what you want about the bots accidentally using Trevor Henderson's artwork, I still think I'd be more likely to be tricked into giving my credit card information to LongHorse than a sexy bikini babe.

As usual, your look's on point. And I love hearing about these kinds of internet mysteries.

Holy shit, i completely forgot this happened- I was on Tumblr for this but didn’t think too much about it it. Definitely saw parts of it but I thought it was a fandom thing or something/a joke I just didn’t get. It’s really cool to know it was an ARG now & i’m actually really glad I saw the conclusion! I can't believe I've never heard of this despite seeing the original dm post so many times. It's really inspiring to see how creativity can manifest in such a unique, both slap-dash and highly intricate form. And the narrative is so straightforward when you think about it, but it still was so engaging because of the slow reveal, without being a letdown. Awesome summary too!

Great video! The one thing I want to contribute to the convo here in the comments is that I think it’s more accurate to describe Unfiction as a term used to indicate the whole spectrum that includes proper ARG’s as well as webseries that borrow elements of the ARG style without being 100% interactive in their own right, as in something like Petscop would be an Unfiction webseries without technically being a proper ARG, while this is itself a more proper ARG and also fits under that Unfiction umbrella

I'm so glad you covered this! I was on tumblr back in the day and did a mini greek mythology themed ARG inspired by this one! Granted I only had 1k followers so it didn't gain traction. But this ARG made me love ARGs so much more.

I wonder if you'll cover whatever has been going on with the OSHA blog(s). Seems like a hot topic and notable Tumblr history.

This was a super fun arg, I really enjoyed seeing it play out irl.

I love how this was a short, quick, fairly wholesome ARG in the early days of unfiction on the internet. It reminds me a bit of Angel Hare in its themes, so one could say that this ARG walked so Angel Hare could run!

This ARG is actually kinda nice. I was on tumblr when it actually happend and I kinda switch off of this ARG cause some people that I followed had a conspiracy theory that the blog was a real life person asking for help via encrypted messages and I just ended up getting annoyed.

I love the idea of a wholesome arg. It’s great. And because of the happy ending, it’s gotta be my favorite arg ever. The writing is great, and all the things the players had to do were healthy and lovely. There should be more like this

Absolutely wild. I was on tumblr the whole time and never knew about this beyond the initial 'hey peebrain, you teleport?' meme, which I never looked into cause I just assumed tumblr bots are weird like that. This is one of the most fascinating and weirdly wholesome ARGs I've ever heard of!
