Hey Girls UK

Here at Hey Girls we know that talking about periods with young people can be awkward - especially for Dads. #Pads4Dads was created by Dads for Dads to help get the conversations started. -- Lets not leave Dads out of the bloody conversation!! -- Go to bit.ly/Pads4Dads for the full story

    I was too embarrassed to tell my dad when my period started, so my mom did. He picked me up from school that day with a bouquet of flowers and a proud/goofy smile. It taught me an important lesson about including fathers and males in the conversation of women's issues, and to honor that important transition in a girl's life. End the stigma!

    My parents had the opposite problem. They were separated so I had a 1/3 chance of starting at my dad's anyway but when I did he just walked off to the shop and grabbed the product he knew would be easiest to teach the use of (pads) from a brand he knew was decent. How did he know to do this? My aunt had him trained to buy stuff for her when he was a teenager. Don't leave brothers out of the conversation and you don't have to worry about most dad's.

    you'd be surprised at how little space is given to periods and how badly understood it still is. Most women don't even have a clue about their cycle, let alone women, and yet, it is still not extensively taught at school. Deeply understanding female cycles and health would empower women, end the stigma and idiocy surrounding periods and would improve women's health and lives. Even gyneacologists still ignore many aspects of a woman's health, despite the fac tthat it's their job. Let's not even mention other doctors. It's downright dangerous. Starting with period products is good; it's a step small enough that it shouldn't be intimidating but significant enough that it could get the ball rolling. All men and women should feel perfectly comfortable buying and asking about period products.

  • @maxfr142

    @maxfr142

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@miyounova Women’s health is absolutely under researched and under funded. For example Ovarian cancer is a silent killer but you never hear about it. If you try to find woman’s health practises it will always be grouped with kids or be related to pregnancy. Women don’t even have the option to have hysterectomy on demand because doctors think they know what a woman wants. In school we learn about periods but not much else. Like I see so many young girls even older women of any age online begging for help with their periods. Whether it be abnormal periods, blood clots or whatever, it’s not spoken about. Even doctors seem to dismiss women’s concerns. Periods can be a good determining factor in overall woman’s health yet most women are either unaware or are taught the bare minimum. Yes we know about period products and that it happens every month but what about when something abnormal happens? I mean I just found out that your uterus can apparently fall out? Like? I think women’s health needs to be looked into a lot more, and more ways of testing need to be invented because being forced into Pap smears and pelvic exams is outdated, and shouldn’t be the only option available

    @@maxfr142 Exactly! That's precisely what I'm saying (although not as clearly perhaps). And when OP said periods are more accepted now, it made me tick because I know so many people who feel too uncomfortable to talk about it. I've also seen men flinch at the check out of a supermarket when they have to hold a period product! I see a lot of disclaimers online, by women, apologising for talking about periods, particularly in FB groups or in videos when said group or channel is not primarily focused on women's health. And in response to some of these posts (which fortunately some people have the common sense not to apologise for), I inevitably see men complaining about the subject being broached, which is bloody ridiculous! As you explain, women often know next to nothing about their specific biological traits and needs (myself included) and it is unacceptable, because not only is it socially awful, it also poses a massive health risk to half the population.

    When I got my period for the first time, my dad was the only one with me at home at that moment. I panicked, then he panicked and then just threw a pack of pads at me to help me XD He then told my mom later what happened and since then the only aspect about periods we have talked about is if it is especially painful or not right, if I am fine (if we talk about it at all which is very very seldom). I encourage dads who read this to at least let their daughters know that they are available for a talk or for giving comfort (making a hot water bottle or bringing meds if necessary) if needed. :)

    I like to keep every size on hand at home, visible in the bathroom, so visitors caught unawares don't need to ask for them. I once had to ask, during my very first period, in a room full of teenage boys. Scarred for life!

    I've always talked to my boyfriend about my period and also to best friends who are men. There's no need for it to be awkward and we need to work to normalize men knowing how periods are and not finding them embarrassing to talk about.

    A male friend of mine asked my friends and I to explain periods to his 11yo son...we talked, we showed props, we took him through the leaflet from the box of tampons. When we were done he was pale, & still looked confused. We asked what was confusing him, and he said"But I don't get what the tampon is actually for?" We said, to absorb the blood. He said "but don't you just pee it out when you go to the toilet?" So we said no, it comes out all the time. He said "ALL THE TIME?JUST LEAKING OUT EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME?????" 30 years on I have still not seen anyone so horrified in my life. It was awesome.

    My dad was really excited when I got my first period. My mom helped me pick out the right pads and when we had found a good fit my dad had me make a note in his old Nokia phone so he could remember which ones to buy. He thankfully made jokes about it and wasn’t weird or awkward at all, I know I felt embarrassed at first but later on it made everything so much easier. Thank you, dad ❤️

I'm 40 now, and my brother's eldest daughter got her period. And she called her old PawPaw who did the same for her as he did for me decades ago.

    Yo but love to all the dads that support their girls man. My dad doesn’t bat an eye and he too would go out with the picture of the label or the actual label and he’ll ask for help. He’s also gotten me chocolate. My guy friends are also chill and I had a partner who was also really cool about it and bought me pads to have at his place. Good on all you guys who are helpful and supportive and don’t make it a weird thing or cause us to feel shamed!

    Yeah, my dads the same way! Any time I ask him to get tampons for me, he just grabs one of those variety packs, some ibuprofen, and some beef jerky for good measure. It’s not awkward or anything bc my parents taught me that it’s okay to talk about and stuff. I don’t see why everyone doesn’t just talk about these things freely, they’re just normal body things! Extremely painful body things, but body things nonetheless
