Just gotta tune it...

If you want a cheap mandolin that you're actually going to enjoy playing, $500 is the minimum. If you can't afford to pay up front, a lot of shops will let you make payments. Trust me, my first mandolin was a fender piece of crap and even though I played the shit out of it, that thing sucked.

So many people can be dettered from trying new instruments because of shit like this. Mandolins can be incredibly cheap and still sound good, saying otherwise hurts the community.
